    The pain is real with Hughes.. one of the saddest moments in this whole series. Another layer to the funeral scene, the immediate meaning of "It's a terrible day for rain" is that Mustang wanted an excuse for crying, but the secondary layer is that, like they said in episode 1, he's useless when wet. Like in the rain.
    He's calling himself useless for not being able to help Hughes.

    this completes the three major tragedies of early Fullmetal Alchemist. the Elric family tragedy, the tragedy of Nina and Alexander, and the tragedy of Maes Hughes. all of them are lives that could be considered insignificant from the perspective of political power and hierarchies, but they're lives that weigh heavy in the minds of the people who knew them. the value of a life is immeasurable... that's what this is all about. it's what the series has always been about. and Hughes wasn't just the father of Elicia... to the Elric brothers, whose father has been absent all this time, and to Winry, whose father has been dead since she was little, Hughes was becoming very important. but even as this life ends, we see the beginning of something important. Hughes found something.

    This is the episode where everything changes. The catalyst that shifts the gears of the story and creates a definitive line of who can we trust and who can't we at this point. It cements Roy Mustang as the tritagonist of the series, a man with as lofty goals as Ed and Al and a motivating vengeance story that you can't help but root for him as he makes a self declaration of waging war against the higher ups to not only attain his dream of Fuhrer but to avenge his closest and dearest friend. The layers of storytelling, thematic resonance and action packed drama escalates from this point onward. Congratulations, you've just finished the FMAB prologue it only gets better and better

  • @solacee4327
    @solacee4327 ปีที่แล้ว +70

    This is a situation like Nina for me. I actually wasn't too shocked you were suspicious of Hughes because of how little we got of him. In the 2003 version we had 25 episodes with him and much more time for Winry and the boys to stay with him and see him as family, and I believe those episodes took place over a couple years instead of just the weeks/months here. I think his funeral (and just post mortem stuff) hits harder here, but I think his death certainly hits much harder if you've seen the 2003 version.
    Luckily from here on they know many people haven't read the manga, and everything is split off from the 2003 version, so from here on (imo) it's an EASY 10/10, and it completely stops glossing over anything

    • @V1G4M1

    The funeral scene hits even harder in the 2003 version because it happens much later in the show, so there's a lot more time to get to know the character and see them interact with the boys. They also changed the ending credits for that episode, replacing the usual JPOP song for a solemn march with the credits rolling like the end of a movie. Very emotional.

    That's the beauty and curse of FMA-more than any other anime, it makes you CARE. A lot of anime with dark themes go too hard on the grit and pain and don't leave enough goodness to root for. In FMA, you see exactly what the characters are fighting for- regaining and protecting humanity (both their own and in the world around them)

    I remember watching this episode as a kid and being absolutely distraught by Hughes passing. It felt like I lost a father figure/role model. Hughes was a character that I had never really seen at the time in anime, a man that is so open about his love for his family, cherishing every second of fatherhood. I had hoped that after Ed and Al got their bodies back, Hughes would step in as their father figure. But unfortunately one of anime's most notorious scumbags had to show his crackhead ass and off Hughes while WEARING HIS WIFE"S FACE! Absolute POS!
    rip to my boy Hughes.

    4:13 they’re still part of the military so they do have an obligation of sorts to tell superiors all they know and also because they don’t actually have a reason to hide it in the first place
    16:30 bradley said not to trust anyone including the military since the enemy is within their ranks so he decided against using a line from within and going for a street phone booth instead to be more discrete

    I've seen this countless times, and it never get's easier. A bit of foreshadowing I noticed in this watch through which I can finally point out: in an earlier episode Hughes says "I don't envy you" to Mustang. It was none other than Envy who killed him.
    For a show that heavily involves the sins, that line had to be intentional.

  • @Krawbs
    @Krawbs ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This hit so much harder in the original anime. You got so much more of Hughes to really get attached to him and seeing his daughter throw a fit during the funeral hit so hard. Original anime Hughes death is one of my top 3 anime deaths. Brotherhood's story is nearly done with the rushing of the original anime story though, so things will start to be fleshed out properly.

    I understand the frustration with how heavily they are playing on the emotions, but I can say that these two incidents (Tucker and Hughes) have a continuous role to play in the entirety of the show, all 64 episodes continue to show the impact that Tucker and Hughes have made to the cast. It never forgets these two.

    The author was very smart. He planted the seeds early on so it made you look into the next two faced character. Hughes was the logic one. Then this. Touché !

    So I wasn't LYING when I said Hughes is a fan favorite, I just didn't specify WHY :). Nobody sees his death coming until right when Lust shows up, and even then, it usually takes until he's in the phone booth for it to really sink in. It's always the best shows that make you feel the most heartbreak. None of the triumphs would have nearly the same meaning or land nearly as hard without having us and the characters hurt so badly, and inversely we wouldn't hurt so much if things weren't good enough to mourn when we lose them.
    I've been talking about how this show gives you something beautiful for you to fall in love with, and when it wants to remind you of the fragility of life, it takes it away. I was thinking about Nina and Hughes when I said that. It's not his actual death that gets you, it's Elicia, who doesn't understand why they're burying her dad, who doesn't understand why she can't see him anymore, just that he promised to come home and he didn't, and it's Roy, lamenting his powerlessness in the face of losing his best friend.
    It's a terrible day for rain.

    FMAB is just like that: It's a rollercoaster of emotions, It makes you cry, it makes you happy, it makes you enraged, and make you warm and fuzzy inside.
    Thats why it's the top 1 anime show...
    and believe-me, If the show have adapted the manga 100% faithfully it would have been even better. FMA B makes a close adaptation, but some things and even some important things are cut down for the sake of rushing the plot, wich makes you lose content and even time to bond with the characters. Hudges Death would have a much more impact if it was shown all of his manga scenes that ended up in the cutting room floor.

    I remember watching this scene in the original anime. I had just grabbed the box of the third season and I was binging it so happily and then BAM! The season ends with a fade out of Hughes dying in the phoneboot and I was left shocked. The fourth season hadn't come out by then and, even after it did, well. I do love the original but a rushed ending is a rushed ending.
    I am happy you are enjoying the roller coaster of emotions that is this master piece \o/ !

    Fun fact, Hughes dies in episode 25 of the 2003 version, and Ed and Al were studying at Shou Tucker’s place Hughes hosts a birthday party for Ed, where the Alricks and Nina Tucker have to deliver Elicia due to a blizzard.
    Nina Tucker first appears in Episode 6, and becomes a chimera in episode 7. However, we know that Ed and Al lived with the Tuckers for at least a few weeks.
    In any case, this was episode two of the three that I look forward to the most when watching reactions.
    I highly recommend watching the 2003 series up to this point.

    I remember watching the original 2003 FMA, and during one episode, I realized the show really had no qualms about killing off major characters. I then said to myself "Anyone could be next! They'd probably even kill off... Him!" Hughes was on-screen when I said this, and he died at the end of the episode!

    It is really a bad day for rain... Welcome to the second circle of pain :'D.
    The fact that you just flipped from suspicious to liking him by right this point just twisted the knife far worse...
    As of his skills, iirc we did grt to see some more of him in the original , but even then not as much. However you can REALLY tell he knows how to work with his intel, he KNEW how to leave Roy some clues about how and why. And thankfully Roy caught the message.
    Lookin' forward to the next episode!

    As you know, Brotherhood is the 2nd serie we got from Fullmetal Alchemist. The first serie start in the same way that Brotherhood does, but close to chapter 30th it's start a completely different plot (which in my opinion, it's nothing compared with Brotherhood that comes from the original manga). But since the first serie of FMA had almost 30 episodes to develop characters this funeral is way intense and heartbreaking that there.
