  • In a previous video I diagnosed this Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ as having a bad PCM. • Jeep Grand Cherokee: N... . The shop just got a used PCM and had me come back to get it working. We have to go into the SKIM module and do the PCM REPLACE Feature using the DRB III. -Enjoy!

    I wonder what the vehicle history looks like. Board corrosion nearly always happens with exposure to humidity. I have often wondered if putting the ECM into a bag with desiccant pouches could help protect against this problem in coastal areas....

      the case is supposed to be sealed fairly tight and not let water in. corrosion of the cheap metal went right underneath and past the sealant allowing water in and game over.

    That model PCM looks like a later jtec style model. Corrosion yes, but looks repairable by any hardcore tech. I've seen quite a few PCMs and that one didn't look potted like the Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep ones I've seen but it did look like it had a conformal coating on it. Wonder why that one wasn't potted.

    I am surprised manufacturers don't pot these boards. Of course the number of connections they need probably cancels out any benefit potting would provide. And perhaps heat build up. Ok. I've talked myself out of potting the PCM.

      Some do !!!!!!!. But the best parctice IHMO is putting the ECM and other related modules INSIDE the body (cabin) like many japanesse. ECM is behind the glowbox. Cabin is more temperature and humidity controlled and unlikely to receive splash, salt, coolant, etc etc etc that modules on the engine bay are more exposed to.

I just can't stand how they all go custom and not have standard initialize/virginize functionality build in, a car theft might just "raise" the Car up or come with specialized hardware anyways :-/

    Dealers should get the electronica computer crap out of cars. Completely unnecessary, and only makes things more difficult to repair in the long run. I have seen a lot of your videos will you get rather in depth when it comes to tracing down computer related problems in cars. All that junk is completely unnecessary to have an a vehicle. Not all of us have the convenience of having the proper scan tool to program PCM's,Skim modules, keys ect.and are at the mercy of those who do including dealers. As I stated in the previous video my WJ went back to the dealer AFTER it was misdiagnosed and parts thrown at it by a trusted repair shop. Do the research folks,the South Main Auto channel is a good resource for just that. Also as I stated before WJ's are prone for shorts to the electrical system so check all ground connections to the frame and engine. I also checked my new PCM that was installed from Chrysler and it does have a rubber seal showing around the edge of the PCM so Chrysler is aware of the problem and doing something about it.

It reads the atmospheric pressure at 9.5 inHg, which is obviously incorrect, and has a system too lean code with over 20% fuel trim at idle and under load. When the engine is off, I made sure that the ECM is receiving 5 volts from the MAP, and this vehicle doesn't have a MAF either. Any help on this would be great, thanks! Keep up the awesome work!

      I'm no expert. Just an amateur. Take this for what it's worth:
      This what what the sensor is for. It provides information about air density. ECM needs this information to provide proper fuel to air ratio supplied to the engine. It may only be noticeable on a warmed up engine but can be vehicle specific.
      Eric can probably tell you the specifics regarding your vehicle. I'm sure he gets a lot of similar questions and simply can't reply to all of them.

      @@RobertHancock1 Yeah exactly, and obviously, the higher you are, the less dense the air is, and thus, it thinks it needs less fuel to maintain it's ratio. That's how I'm seeing the situation.

      @@andrewevanoff1192 The barometric pressure is usually set to the ECM at the factory, something around 29 inHg, and the MAP sensor will report any changes in that pressure. So I'm confused why it would be reading 9.5, other than the possibility that it wasn't programmed correctly in the first place. Also, when the car is running, it reads 3.5 inHg

      I'll assume it has both a BARO(BAP) and MAP sensor, surprised it's not spitting codes and idiot lights lol..
      and yes, it uses both signals to adjust timing and fuel trims. is there an issue with the air cleaner/intake before the throttle plate? something like a soaked/wet/clogged air filter and plugged drain hole on housing or rags, debris, rodents blocking it..

    WHY does the ECM use a plastic membrane instead of a proper printed circuit board?
    Is this Chrysler being "special" again?

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      plastic membrane? it is a pcb with parts on it, and a coating to seal and keep vibration from making parts fall off. the coating is more or less an clear epoxy/resin. the board edges are not sealed tight and I'm sure it's multilayer so plenty of ways for water to get in.
      anyway the main issue is the "whizz-poor" chinesium pot-metal case leaking water in, which happens after it corrodes under and past the sealant where the case halves are assembled

      @@throttlebottle5906 Look at the edge of the substrate at 2:55, that is clearly not a fiberglass PCB. Looks like the sort of stuff you always find on the back of an instrument cluster.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe it is thin film, if so, it must be for easy heat transfer to the chinesium metal which corrodes like the devil, I used to repair some of the older ecm's but haven't bothered trying any of the obdII and later devices, many are potted or impossible to find the parts for, even the old ones you had to reverse engineer to find a component that would work, due to custom labeled parts. now it's mostly larger chips with multiple functions or programmable nightmares =p

      he's right, I yanked the cover on a unknown/bad crapsler/dodgey/jheap around the same era and it was infact just filmed copper crapola. lol
      it just looked like de-laminating/thicker substrate in the video...
