    How to construct a wall of water on a budget and make it dance. This is a design build waterwall with a mechanical motorized actuator. The moving actuator was purchased off the shelf and this project could be constructed by anyone who follows my directions. Video and wall design is the creation of Randy Beard. Randy is a gardening designer with a back ground in water.

    To this day I have never really understood wealthy folks. You have a $75,000.00 + back pool/spa and patio, but you "budgeted" an expensive river rock water wall feature? So you saved some money on the aquatic engineering and mechanics of the rock water wall. That's fantastic! More angus filets and martini's for dinner! I delivered pizza's for a couple of years to feed my family. And I knew when I delivered to a residence such as this there would be no tip. Have to budget those pennies.

    Great work.
    Arduino and non-proprietary PLC programs are widely available for very little. Develop any controlled scheme, and program a multitude of outcomes. Use counters, timers, PID, sequencers, sense flow, light, pressure, sound, presence, temperature to carry out whatever you can imagine and most of the functions are built-in.

    There is no reason why a computer-controlled systems should be thousands of bucks - an Arduino is $20. All you have to do is program it up, and you can make it as simple or as complicated as you want.

    • @justinallen4903

      +Nathan Pattison Paul is absolutely right, an arduino, an hour of coding, a few 12 volt drink machine valves, some relays, and a power supply could accomplish this with a few hours of labor (not including building the wall itself). There is basically no r and d required, just a simple software program and some very simple wiring, put it all in a waterproof box, hook up some tubes, and you're done. As far as Elexie Munyeneh's comment above yours, there is no reason to assume that an Arduino would be any less reliable in the long run than this system. Also, just FYI the guy asked for suggestions and Paul made a good one.

    In-floor cleaning systems for pools generally have a mechanical part that rotates the water flow among several different outputs. Seems that it would be perfectly suited to an application such as this. They run entirely on the flow of the water, with no electricity needed, and are designed for continuous use.

    maybe look into ram pump type of deal so that way...say you have 4 or 5 chambers get filled up it would trigger like an open valve that has a certain pound so it could release the water... it would be less energy because its using gravity instead of electricity. think of those water parks with a big water bucket that would spill onto the kids once its full...that sort of idea, doesn't have to be a bucket but using pvc pipes with a blowout valve when it is at a certain level of full.

    Question: does a water wall provide any cooling benefits? I'm designing my house in Bangkok and I'm trying to devise ways to cool the house besides air con. I'm thinking if I had running water throughout the house somehow I could keep the air temperature down and spend less money on a/c. I don't really like the feel of an air con room anyhow.

    Electric motor and a crank shaft turning piston style water pump each reservoir pumped by its own piston, creating momentary overflow. Long stroke and slow turning will give the dancing effect. You can also do it electronically with an Arduino, a few small pumps and some tubing. 24V system, easy and quiet. Nice work!

      Hey Randy, have you ever built one of these with a sharper/shale style of rock? I have used larger shale rock stacked as a small waterfall in a man made stream from one pond to another, for effect as well as additional oxygenation for the lower pond. If this same thing was done with small shale style on a wall coupled with lighting, it may produce a neat misting and splashing.

    My question, if you're still responding, is would this be a project for northern climates?

    My first thought was low voltage valves like you might use with timer controlled sprinklers, controlled by an Arduino microprocessor. You could even add subtle lighting effects run by the same processor. The patterns could then be random instead of sequential, or even driven by an external input such as a music system. It needn't be any more expensive than what you did here. Any friendly local computer nerd would love the challenge.

    WOW, Randy, this in WONDERFUL! Simple, elegant, serine -- intelligent design. It is neither overwhelming, nor terrible ostentatious, but pleasant and very livable. Besides it is done at a very reasonable cost. Thumbs Up! You have all reasons to be proud of your creation....it is my professional interior designer opinion.

    I like your cost effective way to offer clients more bang for their buck. How about LED to the sides with options for different colors, or an elevated spillway behind the other two to pour over as one unit of water. You probably have that. Looks like something to work on in the future.

    Randy, that wall is really sharp. Has me thinking about building one. As far as a way to dump water, Google "water dump bucket DIY". You could build a totally mechanical dump system that only relies on the increasing weight of the water for timing. Have 3 separate troughs at the top, each with its own supply of water. By adjusting the flow to each trough you can vary the timing.

    It would be possible to mechanize that with a floater that travels up and down and moves the water in waves, so that the wave exits the top at different exit points.

    Late for a reply, but 'Bell Siphons' found in Aquaponics mostly and 3 (or more) small chambers above where the water is released. From pump to each chamber when each bell siphon lets go you have whatever amount of water in that chamber run down the wall. (again, the holding tanks (chambers) would need to be above where the water falls down the wall. So a slot in the facing stone to allow flow..)
    Cost = time and pipe .. as it would be on one normal return anyway. Add one ball valve before it goes up the wall and you can shut it off to do whatever maintenance on it. If it's ever needed being the chambers could be covered.

  • @DkleinD
    @DkleinD 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    All you need is one pump at bottom and a bell siphon in each tank up top to make it dance. The out-spouts up top would have different diameter openings so each section would fill at a different rate. Once full the siphon would kick in and dump the tank. Simple as that :)

    This really looks nice. I would decrease the velocity of the water in that canal from the spa area to make it flow down the steps, rather than shooting over the step like that.

    Pretty cool... For an ad... Randy you gave just enough information to make this semi-informative. I like it, only because I've worked with pools/hardscape in the past, and also like the tech aspect.
    As for wasting water? Swimming pools are a way of life in Cali, at least for now; to save water, we first need to do away with lawns.

    You could do a infloor cleaning canister instead of the jandy valve. Would have longer action, maybe they could get you some different gears and it would spin faster?

  • @DaddyBear3000
    @DaddyBear3000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love what you've done!
    A geared oval actuator might have given some interesting results. The flow/ overflow on this is very predictable, with a different actuator you should have been able to maintain a slow flow to the other quadrants and made the main cascade a little more random. Might have been a bit more expensive, but finding one would have been a bigger challenge.
    Thanks for sharing, I'll be subscribing!

    Cool Cell pads for poultry houses just have a resivor with a recirculating pump and the water trickles down the pad and they suck air through it. They also have a float valve that keeps the resivor full, kinda like a toilet valve.

    Just a quick thought, you might be able to configure a bell siphon method with three different chambers elevated at different levels with each bell siphon discharging from the different chambers at different levels. The only drawback that I could see would be that the water wall would have a top addition that would not have water on it but could be used to display a nice mosaic art piece. But I love this!
