Sublime. I am floored by the talent and flattened by the performance. Eddie's solo was fantastic, Marty was solid, and Bill was otherworldly, as he usually is. "Mono no aware" is a Japanese term or phrase which means the sad beauty of watching time pass. If I had to pick a piece of music that embodied that phrase, this is the piece I'd pick, and this version would be the one.
A long time ago I had an MP3 player with this Jazz Set version of Time Remembered on it and I stood in the spot where it was recorded, and listened to it, thinking this sublime event in time happened in this very space. The demolished NJN studios on Parkside Avenue in Trenton. Bill lives in my heart.
This is an amazing performance of a very steep Bill Evans original composition. Bill's solo is just as good as it gets and I've never heard a more satisfying arco bass solo, over these changes too; wow. I'm listening again.
I am NOT here to tell you your feelings but Mr. Evans has this affect on alot of us. His construction of notes and arrangements are magical. Bill Evans is an alchemist. God bless him.
The piano intro to Time Remembered begins, and the mingling of rich harmony, sustain, silence and ethereal melody immediately convinces me within 14 seconds that there is a God; that Buddha, Mohammed, Jesus, Krishna and the Tao are ALL true, are ALL one, and are speaking to me directly; it was always there, waiting for me to see if I had just opened my eyes and ears and LOOKED and LISTENED. Bill Evans showed me. He continues, and the descending notes in his left hand paint a picture of water, but I’ve never seen water so clearly, understood its ebb and flow so deeply; it’s a revelation, and as the inner voices mix with the descent I understand the original purpose of water, why it seeks the lower ground, and how it interacts in harmony with the stones that it wears down over the years. The video cuts to a woman at the 20 second mark, and it’s apparent that she too knows the water I see; and she too understands the metaphysical truth that I’ve been exposed to; it’s written in her eyes, on her face, in every fiber of her carriage and demeanor. Cut to Bill from the rear, and Eddie Gomez gazing over at him, awed at how every time he hears this it seems as fresh as the first time, awed at his continued good fortune to play with this pianist who wrenches emotion from the ether and transforms it into sound, awed at the deep understanding of mechanics and theory that this composer possesses, yet forgets in order to play and write with such spontaneity. He wonders as he has wondered countless times whether it’s advisable for him to join in and convert this solo perfection into trio sound. Surely it should be left alone to go on? As the intro rolls towards its close, he knows as he always knows that it’s righteous and true to come in; it has been decided long before this date, long before his birth, that he would hear the pause, the sustain, the intervals, and he would play that first bass note at 45 seconds, starting a new trip, a new life, a new existence.
This tune takes the soul, the heart and the mind, it's an extra-ordinary example of acoustic performance, thanks Mr Evans. Music will be nothing without you.
Completely. That moment captures the essence of Bill's music and dare I say it of jazz itself. Such a gift. Time remembered. Time stood still. Timeless.
@@markwilliams3174 I don't think so. the lady in the video looks too hispanic to me. Whats more, Verchomin met Bill in 1979 at the tender age of 22. So she would only have been 14 when this video was made in '71. Interesting conjecture though.
Does anyone know if this specific live recording is available on high quality audio? I know that there are many other versions, some of them live, of this tune, but THIS version from 1971 for the Jazz Set is the one I like best. Thanks in advance
Bill Evans's playing and composition (one of my favorites of his -- in several versions) are as always superb, but Eddie Gomez steals the show on this one with that spectacular arco solo. On the other hand, one has to wonder what ever possessed Eddie to buy that ugly sweater.
Sure, if you want to instead of enjoying this, buy an album with Ron Carter on it and listen. But, as long as you're here, watching Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell, listen to Eddie Gomez' brilliant arco bass solo.
+Alan Van Rompuy This comment could only be a joke. My favourite jazz tune of all time. And I love the bowed bass solo by Eddie Gomez in this performance. More jazz bassists should use the bow.
Pure beauty. A gift for who remains to walk on this wonderful and poor land. Thank you brother Bill

Oh, this Song Is SO profoundly sad... It couldnt have another title... And I love It so much... Its entrenched in my soul. Thanks, Billy Boy.
Music has many shades including sad.

same
Worth many repeats
Saw this Trio in 73 Great American musical Hall San Francisco when it was a great city😢
IN '73 San Francisco's North Beach was alive & well.
It's marvelous !!! Bill played as always and Eddie Gomez looked like Scott La Faro. Amazing and terrific show
'Eddie Gomez was still playing in recent years... on December 31st, 2023...
No words can describe
This must've been played a lot around me while I was still in my mom's womb because I feel a certain comfort and calm like no other when I hear it

A hauntingly beautiful masterpiece!
My favorite bass solo by Gomez! Amazing
Yes.
Love Eddie’s bass here too with Chick: th-cam.com/video/nnzR_ZqqH1I/w-d-xo.html
I Love Bill Evan's music

I believe that this is one of the best performance of his masterpiece.
Thank you for sharing!

In Time Remembered Palestrina meets Ravel through the genius and creativity of Bill Evans.
Any Palestrina recommendation?
i want this to be played on my funeral.
The audience attending and now listening is transported to a place that BE is creating and we are all just along for the ride.
I know this clip, it is an astonish documenye of Bill's art..... speechless.....
Absolutely sublime.

un genio del jazz! magnífico! sublime!
The lady at 0.20 is definitely caught in a trance by Bill Evans' intro

Laurie Verchomin? Author of "The Big Love: Life & Death With Bill Evans" (2011)

@@Suggsonbass Cool - I nearly thought we had the "Big Love" unfolding before us. It would have been nice.

I do not consider myself a connossieur of jazz, but this is still magic to me: so soft and sweet, so much sense
Breath-taking.

para mi, el mejor pianista de jazz de todos los tiempos. Lastima que partió.Y siempre se rodeó de grandes contrabaistas!!
@Drjisra absolutely.the greatest!!!

It’s almost too beautiful. Too gut wrenching. Bill told Tony Bennett “Always search for truth and beauty”. Clearly Bill had already found it...
arco bass solos are the best
@RadiusX7 I'm stealing it too.
La pelota siempre a bill...sabelo..
requint total
@madero111 You propably mean the man who uploaded so great songs all the time.Yeah, that was something unexpected!!!!!Anyway, check my channel for jazz

there's not enough arco bass in jazz
listen to Ron Carter

420th like. 1 dislike from some troll-minded and benighted soul.
man wtf is he playing this is horrible

Haha, easy to recognize: genuine Belgian humour!
Alan Van Rompuy. You must be some kind of nut 😨
good one
He was suffering from hepatitis that reduced his peripheral circulation and gave him cold hands.
