    Try to overlook the audio quality. I had one mic die and had to salvage audio from a backup mic, so there is some background noise I had to work around.

    Two things I love about this! 1, you put the breeder and producer in their correct categories. I’ve always said people who raise queens and call themselves breeders are most definitely not! 💯🏅
    2, beekeeping is hard. This video personifies exactly the organisation and Integral work ethic you need to follow if you have any chance of making a feasible business!!

    I'm in my second year as a startup apiary. I stripped down 3-4 single boxes coming out of winter and grafted queens from a selected queen. I had a pretty good success rate getting queens mated in early spring and again in the fall. I started with three hives the first year to overwinter six in 10 frame singles. After learning to graft, I'm at 20+ 10 frame boxes and several Nucs to overwinter. I'm looking to produce local queens as its more profitable than pollination or honey in my area. My preferred breed in Apis Carnica open mated to typical Italian stock as they do well in my area with a long dearth in mid summer.

      @@DuckRiverHoney I hope you take up queen rearing. As for me I'm planning to requeen my colonies in 2023 and bring in (if I can find them) some instrumentally inseminated queens like Cory describes, or at least his VSH virgins while I learn more about selecting, testing and queen banking. If I get the bug I'll start rearing my own queens because I ABSOLUTELY HATE VARROA MITES!! Lol.

    There's something I'm not fully understanding re: breeder queens. I have always been under the impression that the high price(relatively) of a breeder queen was not only her genetics but that she had also been thoroughly evaluated over the course of a season(s) as to her production characteristics. Your II breeders, do they go through this kind of field evaluation or not?

    The only question you missed, was Cory's views on the use of Queen Banking Colonies, especially for virgin queens. I presume he doesn't use them but I'd be very interested in his views since it would be backed by both valuable experience and biological science!

      @Peter Detchon I typically hold virgins with fresh attendants in candy cages and keep them in an incubator. Most ship or are used asap. When I do occasionally bank virgins, I use large spent cell builders that are filled with bees and stores and are hopelessly queenless. They take phenomenal care of them consistently.

    Hello gentlemen. My plan is to move over seas to the Philippines. I have the lease of one hectare and the pawn of 49990 square feet. I have coconuts, bananas of three or four varieties, mangoes, avocados and cocoa. Coconut and bananas are the two main income producers. I grow a large bunch of vegetables, zucchini, pumpkin, green beans etc.
    Bees! I have a few options in Misamis province. There is the monster honey bee, Apis giganticus living on tree limbs or some such thing. I’ve had the name escape me. Apis mellifera and Apis Cerana are the two most seen in bee yards. Tetragonula Biroi and maybe Tetragonula Carbinaria are the two most prevalent stingless species. These four species are good pollinators and should increase crop yields. Nor so many bee keepers in the province.
    Apis Cerana is due for eradication efforts in Australia. I understand it is the varroa issue. I’ve read that the A. Cerana is varroa hygienic and more apt to pull or discard injured or sick brood. Is it possible to cross these two Apis species? Is it a bad idea ie. Killer bees? I’ve seen Filipinos pulling hives, cut outs, with only a veil. They move slowly and use some smoke. Look gentle enough to me, said the guy with a swollen face.
    Thanks for the education. Thanks for the inspiration. Just thanks guys.

    I understand that you get genetic quicker with a virgin if they live, but a second generation cycle with a mated queen gets ya similar levels of genetics as the virgin doesn't it?
    Virgins have a greater chance of dyeing when introduced, a greater chance when they go out and try to mate. Because of all that I have a greater chance of money loss maybe not the best way to invest into my apiary when I'm so small, maybe someday. To each their own, that is the best thing about beekeeping it's all personal. Ty for the great info, has been a great interview.👍
    😉Oh and LOL you 2 talking like ya are old at 40 I started beekeeping at 51 and am sling deeps around, step it up you youngins.😅🤣 "Age is a state of the mind if you don't mind it don't matter." Lift with your🦵's😉

    • @DuckRiverHoney
      @DuckRiverHoney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are pros and cons to everything. Virgins will have a success rate, so will mated queens. With virgins I’d expect 75-80% on the low end depending on weather and beekeeper skill. With mated queens maybe 90-100% depending on the same things. Make more nucs to overcome the misses. The pros are if you’ve already got bees you like, you’re changing them less with virgins, and you’re adding VSH.
