I have the same car and just rebuilt all of the hydraulic roof cylinders myself. They are not that difficult to rebuild, time consuming. There is a great video series on YT done by Klaus at Top Hydraulics. Goes in detail about the removal of every cylinder and there are 11 in the 1997. Cost me less than 100 bucks and time. Great car.

I worked with Rusty at Motorwerks in Commerce, MI. They work with a local guy who rebuilds seals and sources them to the shop. The shop installed it for me. I might do a google search first as there is another company out there that makes brand new seals out of a more durable material. I can't recall the name at this time but they are on MB forums.

I now own my third R129. After selling the first one I kicked myself and bought another. The first one was a triple black SL500 w/ 19K miles. It was so nice I was afraid to drive it. It fetched top, and I mean top dollar for it. The second one was just OK so I sold it. I now have a silver 2001 w/ 53K miles. It is in tip top shape and is meant for driving rather than stared at. Great cars and I'll be buried with mine!
(BTW, plastic replacement parts for these cars can be located on EBay. That includes sun visors and rear mirror components.)

Bought mine at the end of Spring 20'. A Black Green Metallic 1996 500 model with the exclusive leather package. Can't believe that after 25 years (according to the build date) there's zero rattles! Everything is smooth and comfy despite me changing the shocks to Bilsteins instead of Sachs. Mechanically wise it's seriously well thought! Most parts that you'll change as consumables are super easy to change. The rest too except as you've mentionned, the hydraulics. But if you know where to shop for parts and work on your cars yourself, it's cheap to run for what it is. Good thing people are afraid of old german cars for nothing, this keeps the prices low for us to snag hahaha.

I’m still driving my 1993 at 133,000 miles. Car is tight. FAST. And with the new BF Goodrich g-Force Comp 2s it handles like a dream. Car is a blast to drive and I love putting on my hardtop for the harsh rainy season in San Diego and then switching to soft top mode in the spring! There’s nothing like an R129 - especially with the V8 and V12 engines. Last of the handmade cars and the M119 block and heads than won Le Mans!!!

Back in 2016 I had been retired for 2 years and been playing the rising stock market successfully like most were. One day I made a significant amount in one day and decided on a whim to buy one of these as a retirement present to myself. I wanted a 500 but couldn't find a decent one locally, but did find a 1999 one lady owner 320 with heated seats and the uplift package - best of all the lady must have been slight so the interior was immaculate so I bought it off the advert off the lady's son - she had sadly passed away otherwise it would have never been sold he told me! Paid £7,000, what's it worth now? The plastic windows needed replacement like they all do at that age and the ECU packed up and the roof wouldn't work, but I took that as normal. I got a lifetime guarantee on the rebuilt ECU and love the car - it came with the panoramic roof that is a MUST! It's not a sports car it's a cruiser a grand touring car and it's probably one of the best cars ever made! I don't miss the 500 the 320 is good enough, but the package is what counts with these cars and of course a decent service record and one old lady owner!

Nice video and beautiful car. I see you still have the dealer tag on your key chain. :-) I have a 1999 SL 500 Sport in the same Silver / Grey color combination which I bought in 2001 from my local Mercedes Dealer. The car was a lease return that i purchased with 19,000 miles on the odometer. I drove it as my only car for about 3 years and then bought something more practical and made the SL a weekend driver. I now have 96,000 miles on the odometer and have experienced both the "newness" of the car and now the "old school" vibe of the car. Its always been a head turner. With regular maintenance, they will last forever. Enjoy your car and thanks for the video.

Nice video 👍I have a 1997 with the same color combo and a Pano roof and 53k on the odometer. Also had to fix my rearview mirror which I did with used parts from E-bay. You are correct with the hydraulic top issue its actually not the motor that goes but the seals in the cylinders they degrade over time. I replaced 2 of them myself (which was a pain because where they were located) there is a company called Top Hydraulics and they have step by step instructions on YT and thats where I bought my cylinders from. You will have to send your old cylinder back to them. It cost me only $200.00 and since they use new upgraded high grade seals they should not ever leak again.

However, spring is here and i'm just waiting for the perfect day to get the roof off. I've seen a few people already with their roofs off in a mitata but i know they have the heater on full blast lol. I'll prob wait for end of April and blasting All Eyez On Me album!
