I have the same car and just rebuilt all of the hydraulic roof cylinders myself. They are not that difficult to rebuild, time consuming. There is a great video series on YT done by Klaus at Top Hydraulics. Goes in detail about the removal of every cylinder and there are 11 in the 1997. Cost me less than 100 bucks and time. Great car.
I worked with Rusty at Motorwerks in Commerce, MI. They work with a local guy who rebuilds seals and sources them to the shop. The shop installed it for me. I might do a google search first as there is another company out there that makes brand new seals out of a more durable material. I can't recall the name at this time but they are on MB forums.
I love mine . I have had a r230 r107 and currently daily a R231 . The r129 is the best car out of them all . I’ve owned mine for 17 years and I will never sell it .
I have a 1997 Sl500. The hydraulics were shot. There are 8 for the roof, 2 for the rollbar. It cost me 8K to get all of them replaced in 2019. The car runs fantastic and is a joy to drive. It’s a beautiful car.
I now own my third R129. After selling the first one I kicked myself and bought another. The first one was a triple black SL500 w/ 19K miles. It was so nice I was afraid to drive it. It fetched top, and I mean top dollar for it. The second one was just OK so I sold it. I now have a silver 2001 w/ 53K miles. It is in tip top shape and is meant for driving rather than stared at. Great cars and I'll be buried with mine! (BTW, plastic replacement parts for these cars can be located on EBay. That includes sun visors and rear mirror components.)
Bought mine at the end of Spring 20'. A Black Green Metallic 1996 500 model with the exclusive leather package. Can't believe that after 25 years (according to the build date) there's zero rattles! Everything is smooth and comfy despite me changing the shocks to Bilsteins instead of Sachs. Mechanically wise it's seriously well thought! Most parts that you'll change as consumables are super easy to change. The rest too except as you've mentionned, the hydraulics. But if you know where to shop for parts and work on your cars yourself, it's cheap to run for what it is. Good thing people are afraid of old german cars for nothing, this keeps the prices low for us to snag hahaha.

I got a lifetime guarantee on the rebuilt ECU and love the car - it came with the panoramic roof that is a MUST! It's not a sports car it's a cruiser a grand touring car and it's probably one of the best cars ever made! I don't miss the 500 the 320 is good enough, but the package is what counts with these cars and of course a decent service record and one old lady owner!

Best car ever my is 1996 and drive like a wind .
I drive a 2007 Honda Accord V6. Would this feel like a much faster car, or would it be pretty much similar?
If you have a 500 SL it’s a V8 engine. You know you’re driving a V8. I have a 1992 500 SL and it’s by far the greatest car I’ve ever owned. I could get probably $20k for this car but I couldn’t get half as good of a car for $20k. I’ll keep mine forever. The R129 is perfect. Funny side note - there are zero cup holders in mine! It seems weird but true.
Save a little and get a windschott! We'll hear you better.
where can look to buy one of these?
Where is your rear view mirror
No joke on a warm summer day it melted apart and fell down. I’m sure someone previously glued it together and didn’t disclose that to me.
i have the V12, awesome cars.......
i also have a v-12 bought it in 2012 with 46-k on it -it now has 54-k on it --i drive it on average 3 to 5 times a year. -in all the years i have owned it it has never seen snow - and rain maybe once or twice. ---great car

Also see " Mercedes Benz SL600 V12 drive and review (R129) " on the channel " Harry's garage "
Everyone in the comment section buys these with 20-50K miles on the clock so ppl bought Mercedes cruisers for $100k just to not drive them....sure, idiots.
Mercedes Benz the best or nothing!
What you have is a electronic nightmare, Every Module in the car was designed to fail creating a cascade of more failures in the system with age.
Looks is all your going to get with this vehicle. All other department meh.....
TO ALL TH-camRS, WE DONT WANT TO SEE YOUR FACE, WE WANT TO SEE THE CAR, DONT SHOW US YOUR FACE WHEN DRIVING THE CAR
