communal oversight on the youth is undervalued/underutilized. Sure the kids are getting in trouble over cigs but on the other hand, if something bad ever happens, she would be able to immediately get help

Shed look out and see us pilfering her tomatoes and and orchid in general and just scream out "I know the look!" Sure as shit when we got home our parents would flog us raw. This lady knows what every family in valleys familial traits are. From 50m away she identified us as greentrees, fernances and deaves. It takes a village, meaning a small community that is generations old and know what the familial traits of each family are. I miss living in a little farming village. The city is truly the anti human force of evil.
Good on the great-Grandma for doing that because it really can mess up the teens in the future depending on what they’re doing
I mean besides the health issues of cigarettes it is also the money issue. I worked with a guy who hated that he ever tried a cigarettes because he spent so much money on them. He still smoked.
@@argh432Bro that's so true. I started smoking in college, sometimes 3 cigarettes per day, but stopped completely when I began to write my expenses on a notebook and realized just how much money I was spending in something that wasn't even worth it. Haven't smoked in almost a year.

Bro, that's all grandmas in my city except they don't get paid, they do it for fun, gossip about it and throw shit at kids and yell at them
We had a Greek family at the mouth of the valley, we'd go to pilfer fruit and she'd just scream "I know the look" this community is so small she knows the Inherited traits that each family in the valley carries. God I miss my little farming village home. Disease killed the cattle and we had to sell the farm. To pay the debts dad owed. But those years were the best, I will forever look down on cities for the experience. Give me that little village over the city anyday. I don't need a mall or anything, just the general store and the weekly markets where we all swap produce and organise community work like clearing roads or a new paddock. 300 people and only 8 last names. As god intended.

See, this is how I know I've been playing way too many TTRPGs, because my first thought was "she should be blackmailing the kids, that information should go to the highest bidder, the kids deserve to be able to try harder to not get caught, what does the grandma owe to the parents for that information to go to them first?" And then I'm like "Oh my gosh am I advocating for blackmailing minors in order to let them smoke cigarettes without their parents permission???? What is wrong with me!!!"

Finally, someone being sensible about this. I really don't understand why everyone is idolizing this old woman. I thought we pretty much decided that being a snitch and/or a busybody was nearly universally negative?
If your child doesn't trust that you know what you're talking about when you tell them smoking is a bad idea, you have failed as a parent. The neighborhood narc isn't going to fix that for you, it will just give you an opportunity to punish your child, they will feel it was unfair because you couldn't possibly have known, and they will end up choosing riskier spots to do it.
If you want to be the old woman who watches the kids outside doing things they shouldn't, be a genuine force for good: watch them to make sure they don't do anything dangerous and nobody gets assaulted, instead of forcing them to go somewhere no one can help if someone gets hurt.

Is it petty though? She’s potentially saving these kid’s entire futures. Cigarettes can seriously fuck you up if you get addicted. Even aside from the whole lung cancer thing, spending a bunch of money on cigarettes when it’s already hard to make enough for rent right now is bad

I remember in 2004, me and my mates managed to get into a local smoke store after hours. We stole about 20 packets of cigarettes. The three of us got really scared after we left because we didnt know where to keep them, so, like any normal person, we each smoked 3 packets in 2 hours. God we were stupid

This is exactly what I talked about as a kid to my friends, the idea that someone could always be watching and If you truly want to get away with something it shouldn't be done 30ft from where people know you. But they said I was paranoid, they said it was unreasonable to go to the park one city over instead of our local one just to smoke. Vindication!

My grandma, RIP, was the neighborhood candy store. When we visited her, my mom went to the local bulk food store and got her boxes of candy bars, 5 gallon ice cream tubs and those huge sleeves of cake ice cream cones and the kids would come to her kitchen window and buy her goods

I had this but in reverse. My entire neighborhood was elderly people and middle age folks. My sister and I walked to and from school, and my Mom would know our location because the old fold would see us walking and talk to her. We were like their daily reminder to call our mom. “Ah, yes I just saw the girls walking home. So how’s the garden going V?” My mom was able to time our walk from and too school, based off of what the neighbors said.
