- What would we do if we ran Topps? What kind of similar gimmicks to the Jackson Holliday/Billy Ripken Fun Face card from the 80s and 90s would we like to see again?
The answers to these viewer questions, plus a focus on some of the rarest SSPs in the hobby on this week’s episode.

Thanks so much for joining us -- the 4th was great, nice and relaxing with family and friends. Hope your was, as well!
I get home from work and turn the episode on and make my drink with the hosts.
That’s so cool to hear!!
🍻🍻
Yu Darvish has a SP of him batting in 2020 Topps. I know because i have it. But yeah it's a rare thing these days.
Nice! Yeah, that would make a fun collection: Pitcher Batting SPs/SSPs
I actually really like the Bob Ross series. Picked up an Adley image variation that I think looks amazing!
Some of them do look pretty cool, I might have to look around at them for any possible PC pickups, but I don’t see them gaining a lot of value long term.
In the last 2 months i gave away approximately 45,000 cards at card shows to young collectors.
Very cool! Are you a dealer set up at those shows?
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin I am a dealer but also a collector. The.parents are appreciative.
Curious on a comment Chris made about the Ohtani RC to go after. He said the Bowman Chrome PSA 10. I was thinking the Topps Chrome throwing refractor PSA 10 which has a pop of 1,500 versus the Bowman pop even of PSA 10 is over 4k. The chrome refractor is less expensive actually. I want one Ohtani RC and want to spend hundreds, not thousands.
Hey man, Chris here. The hobby at Marte definitely prefers the Bowman Chrome rookie image over the topps chrome.
But interesting option - base BC vs refractor TC in PSA 10’s.
Is a bowman chrome refractor in a PSA 9 an option?
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin thanks Chris! I’ll have to look and see what the BC ref PSA 9 goes for. I’m a little OCD about seeing the 10 in modern cards 😂
Off topic but ...ive noticed more than a few 1st bowman and rookie cards where the players number changes for various reasons..how does this affect jersey #/d cards...is it simply whatever # they wore that year applies to the cards from the same year..for example Lawrence butler is wearing #22 on all his rookie cards in 2024...but he is actually #4...i saw his red ink auto #/22...thats what made me ask this question...thanks brother's , great show as always..
That's really interesting, I'd never considered that. I would tend to go along with what you said: the number they wore that year/issue would be the number to seek out for the premium. I wonder what guys who collect Jersey #d cards would say? Thanks for commenting and for watching!
I don’t know who would hire him, but I would love to see a Tony La Russa card turned into the infamous Jim Leyland card.
🤣🤣🤣
I've started trashing the majority of base cards. I don't think I'll ever regret it. Actually, it helps to increase the value of other people's base cards 😉
Thanks for sharing. Probably the right move - just SO HARD for me to throw cards away 😳
My favorite inserts from the 90's were Fleer Ultra. I thought my Manny Ramirez Wave of the Future rookie and my Don Mattingly Gold Glove Die Cut were the coolest cards ever made when I was a kid.
@@mattanderson7139 Chris here - yes!! I liver Fleer ultra back in the 90s too. They seemed so rare without eBay back then. I remember hunting for a Frank Thomas RBI Kings card for months!!
The only 2 notable inserts is till have from the 90’s are Greg Maddux die cuts. A 1994 Flair Gold Glove (Hot Gloves?) and a 1997 Leaf Statistical Standouts card. I love them!
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin Hot Gloves is what they were called. You are right. I had to go back to my collection after my post to verify. Such great looking cards came out of those sets. I'm relieved they're cheap. Maybe one day I'll pursue the complete set for sentimental reasons. You all will be the first to know if I do. Thanks for the reply.
Trea Turner's game again ATL today is exactly why Philly fans helped get him voted into the ASG. He was the difference maker in a close game. You guys seem to be okay with the selection (I agree that Mookie Betts is the better choice IF he was healthy). I get the feeling a lot of people outside Philly aren't though.
Yeah he was a monster today! Can't really argue with him starting -- the fans voted who they wanted to see. Plus, he slides into home like nobody else!
Ok for a real question. What what level of population do you consider a topps now to be a sp or ssp? Because the Chourio has one that's pop 465.
Hey there, thanks for watching!
We wouldn’t consider any ToppsNow cards to be an SP/SSP.
Those designations are for pack pulled cards only, not online exclusives.
I’m not trying to hate on ToppsNow - there are some great cards from there with autos and relics, and commemorations of great moments.
My dynasty cards, gunnar henderson, aaron judge, greg maddux, randy Johnson, corey seager, juan soto world baseball classic,David ortiz, george brett, fernando tatis jr
Nice variety!
I know I’m late to the party here, but I bought a hobby box of 2014 opening day off of eBay for roughly $80 a while back, 1 seller had like 10 of them, I did not pull an SSP so hopefully there are still some left and you guys can scoop them up!
Oh man! Thanks for the tip, might have to hunt some down 💪🏼
You guys aren't the only ones that jinxed aaron judge. I bought a dynasty card on Wednesday and since than nothing 😢, but I am on board with T Pot on dynasty cards, the gunnar henderson I got in April for 950. Is selling for over 3,000 all day now. I have 10 dynasty cards because of Tpot. It's the highest end cards you can buy, cost 1,200 to 1, 500 just to rip 1 card. I let others rip then I can the one I want.
Smart move letting others do the ripping!
