@@Leafsdude At a minimum I see Joe Woll as a legit backup. That said, the Leafs will still need a second goalie not currently under contract to them. Of goalies who I hope the Leafs bring back or otherwise under contract to them:
      - Martin Jones is a pending unrestricted free agent although hopefully, for a sub-US$1-million per-season cap hit for up to 2 seasons, Treliving will re-sign said goalie
      - Artur Akhtyamov was loaned, during the 2023-24 NHL season, to the KHL and VHL clubs for which he had then been playing, and up to through this month had yet to play an NHL non-preseason game (NPG)
      - Vyacheslav Peksa, during the Leafs’ most recent season, also didn’t play NHL NPG, playing any NPG with the van soon to be defunct Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL
      - Keith Petruzzelli is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights provided the Leafs give him a qualifying offer but has yet to play in an NHL NPG despite having dressed for quite a few in November 2022
      - Dennis “The Hildebeast” Hildeby has outside his homeland (Sweden), at least following the 2014-15 NHL season, only played 10 or more NPGs in ONE season: the AHL one that for the Toronto Marlies ended by last month
In a nutshell the Leafs have two goalies under contract to them, with the Growlers having folded early in April, via the Marlies. As goalies of course don’t grow on trees, the Leafs could draft some more of them. Woll, who they drafted, helped them stay in their most recent playoff series for longer than they might otherwise have. That said, goaltending isn’t everything because if it were, the Canucks and Winnipeg Jets likely would have, in more of the past 4-5 seasons, gotten much closer to Stanley Cup finals than they did. Last postseason:
      - Connor Hellebuyck allowed a lot of ugly goals but by no means was he the ONLY reason the Jets had:
      - gone 1-4
      - allowed, in each of those games, at least 5 goals (4 excluding empty-netters), resulting in an active 9-game streak during which they would end up having allowed at least 4 goals
      - Jets, then-head coach Rick Bowness, in just one game, pulled Hellebuyck in favour of then-pending unrestricted free agent Laurent Brossoit
      - the Canucks respectively used and dressed 3 (Thatcher Demko, Casey DeSmith and Arturs Šilovs) and 1 (Nikita Tolopilo) goalies in large part because 2 of them (Demko and DeSmith) got injured and didn’t play anywhere near as many games as just 1 of them (Šilovs, who liked Demko they had drafted)
      - the Oilers used their 2 main goalies (Stu Skinner and Cal Pickard [the latter of whom late during the last full week of June they signed to a 2-season US$2-million contract to go into effect next month) after having taken into account their non-use of Jack Campbell at the NHL level from last November, when they had waived him (sending him down to the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL after no non-Oilers NHL team had claimed him), to this month
I would no doubt like to believe the Leafs have quality goaltending depth but considering that under Kyle Dubas as GM, not enough free-agent signings worked out, it still remains unclear what quality of goalies believes will manage to acquire through free agency should they manage to acquire at least one.

It's not the first time Weekes just spoke out of his ass about something that no one else ever managed to confirm. Last year it sure looked like something was going on with Linus Ullmark in the playoffs. He wasn't moving right after game 1. It seemed like he got the sickness that was going around the team at the time. Weekes reported Ullmark was hurt and fans were going to be shocked to find out how bad. No surgery. No reports of rehab. Radio silence. Sure didn't seem like Ullmark was hurt. Sure seemed like Weekes thought he saw something that looked like the player was injured and wanting a scoop he incorrectly reported something. In most sports doing something like that would be a big issue. But in the NHL for whatever reason no matter how bad a media persons track record is it never seems to come with consequences.

"Taking the podcast to Washington" - when your headlines are all-caps. Smells a bit like the Browns in the Super Bowl.

Guys. Matthews could score 100 goals it wouldn't matter. He is not a winner. Period.

No one is a winner until they win. People said this about Yzerman, Modano, Ovie more recently. Dudes got at least ten more years to try and figure it out. Look how long it took Ray Borque

@@stug5041 You completely missed the point. It's not about having won yet. It's being a winner, which an attitude and Matthews is not.

Just imagine what they will get if they trade Matthews. I still remember what the Nordiques / Avalanche got after they traded away Lindros.
