we do have American cars that are left hand drive and some Americans especially white Americans ship their cars and you can see them mostly in Capetown with the steering on that other side, but we do have people specialized in conversion of those cars . they change the steering to the other side. its challenging to drive a right hand car on the other side . i experienced this in British Virgin Ilands. they drive on the left as us but they have American cars . i rented a 4x4 and it was wired to me and very easy to hit cabs

SA has mostly German cars which are made in SA and exported to Southern hemisphere countries. There aren't too many American Cars here and they arrive with the steering wheel already set to our side. When rich Americans bring their cars, they pay about 30% vat to import their car. This is to stop car imports since we manufacture cars and need to protect our market. Also you must register the car and you have maximum 12 months to convert the car's steering wheel to the same side as ours or else it's a massive fine. Hence only the rich do it. Ordinary people just buy a car here and avoid import costs.

Our laws on importing cars into South Africa are far much easier compared to the US. Biggest hurdle is the Taxes associated. You can pay up to half the value of the car you are importing to have it registered.
