"Herinneringen aan Anne Frank" van Miep Gies, waarin zij de dagen beschreef,
die de familie Frank bij haar was ondergedoken tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog
en de beruchte 4 augustus 1944, de dag dat de familie werd afgevoerd.
Interview hierover met Miep en Jan Gies, waarbij Miep enkele "relikwieën" van Anne

Miep Gies heeft een standaard van haar in Montfoort en een straatnaam, geweldig, 2 staten van mij vandaan.❤
Dit is een van de meest fascinerende documentaires die ik ooit heb gezien. Dit is Nederlandse geschiedenis dat nooit vergeten mag worden.
Ik heb veel meer respect voor deze mensen dan de beroemdheden van vandaag.
Deze vrouw kan het mooi, en levendig vertellen. Respect! Heel fijn om naar te luisteren.

Fijn ook dat ze gewoon haar verhaal kan doen, zonder dat de interviewer met quasi-kritische vragen het gesprek een bepaalde kant op stuurt. Dat zou tegenwoordig niet meer kunnen.

Wat een super mens, wat zou de wereld mooi zijn als iedereen zo was. Hoe kan het dat er zoveel monsters waren en zo weinig Mieps, dank je voor je moed en verzet.
Zeer ontroerend verhaal wat zij zich over de jaren heen tot in detail is blijven herinneren. Wat mij ook opvalt is, dat zij de Nederlandse taal zonder accent uitspreekt. Zij was geboren en opgegroeid in Wenen, maar zij sprak de Nederlandse taal perfect uit. Er is geen verschil te horen tussen iemand die in Nederland is geboren en opgegroeid en Miep Gies. Zij was een geweldige vrouw.

This is Mrs Franks powder box. This was one of the things that I was able to save. Look how lovely it is. I haven’t changed anything about it, haven’t used it of course. Even the powder is still in here. And a beautifully cut mirror. Beautiful... this is very precious to me.
And this here is a cape. I snatched it off the coat rack at the last minute after the raid and it belonged to Anne. She always used it in the morning and evening to comb her hair, she loved to have her hair perfect. I never washed it after the raid, so it does have some stains, but it is the original. I’ll keep this for as long as I can, and what happens to it after we’ll have to see.
And this here was something Anne used to protect her shoes when she went traveling.

Interviewer: Before we go inside, Mrs Gies, you worked here from 1933 to 1947. What do you feel, when you come back here?
Miep: All the memories come flooding back. As if I never left. I know my way around and sometimes it’s hard...when you remember that the people that lived here aren’t here anymore.

Otto Frank was the only member who survived the war. On the 4th of August 1944 the Germans found the Secret Annex.
Miep: We always relive it the same. It is always an emotional day for us. In the morning when we get up we try to be as calm as possible. We try not to look at the time, we know exactly what happened each hour. At about 5 in the afternoon we know that it’s over. That’s when we start to act “normal.” Not a day goes by that we don’t think about then and mourn them. We can’t forget. We have had to do so much speaking over the years since the diary was published, that we can’t forget. They meant so much to us.

The Monday morning that they came to hide was a rainy day. Which was a good thing because it meant there wouldn’t be as many soldiers around. We (Miep and Margot) quickly cycled to the Prinsengracht (the street). Margot didn’t ask any questions. As soon as we arrived we parked the bike in the storeroom, opened the office door and went up the stairs to the Annex. Without saying a word. I had seen it already as Mr Frank had explained the plan and how it would work beforehand. At around 11, Mr Frank, Mrs Frank and Anne arrived. They went up the stairs right away, they knew the way. Afterwards I went and asked what they needed off the shopping list. I then left them alone, I could see Mrs Frank and Margot sitting there silent and expressionless. “No longer had it in them” so to speak. It was terrible. I quickly left to get the shopping.
Interviewer: How was Anne in the beginning?
Miep: As always Anne was bubbly and cheerful. From what I could see she wasn’t finding it hard and was the most cheerful of the lot. She seemed to be the life of the bunch!
The interviewer: We can read what daily life was like in Anne’s diary. What was daily life like for you?
Miep: Look, we all had our own task. My task was to be the first one upstairs in the morning to collect the shopping list. When I got there they would all be standing there in a line, Anne at the front. It wasn’t nice because it really showed how dependent they were on you. They didn’t speak a word, didn’t ask anything..only Anne. She would always say cheerfully: Hi Miep! Any news? Just plain, casual. That would always be a terrible moment for Mrs Frank. “Please Anne, don’t be so upfront” she would say in German, she always did that when she got emotional. It would set off Mrs Van Daan. We all kind of knew there was some conflict and that there was something between those two families, buut they never showed us that because we got the impression that they didn’t want to be of any burden to us.
Mrs Frank was always very modest. She would give the shopping list and sometimes I would ask the ladies, you know how that goes, if they would need any of their their own supplies from the pharmacy. Mrs van Daan would need a thing or two and Mrs Frank would too of course, but she would always say: Miep, only if it’s no trouble, only if you can and I would always think to myself: Woman please, I’m asking you aren’t I? I don’t mind doing this for you at all. But Mrs Frank always remained very modest even if it usually pained her.
Occasionally we would spend the night with them which was always very nice. We would all be together and make some dinner and just for a moment it would feel as if everything was normal, as if you were free. After we had had dinner around the table and washed up the men would go and smoke and talk about politics while the woman talked amongst themselves. Then we would go up to bed and I would sleep in Anne’s bedroom. Anne would spend that night in her parents bedroom. And I must admit I never slept a wink those nights. Those were moments where I really felt what going into hiding meant. A sort of pressure, a fear...you really felt the fear and the feeling of being trapped. I’d always be glad when it was morning. I never told them that of course. I always told them that it was very comfy and nice which would please Anne because she loved to talk for hours and ask loads of questions.

There was a hook here and a place to put your hand and then we would be able to move the bookcase. There was a really high step here which caused us a great deal of pain because we bumped our head up here many times!
(She then proceeds to explain how the main room of the Frank family looked and was furbished.) Anne would sometimes write at that little table over there or at her desk.

Interviewer: Speaking of Anne, you once accidentally caught Anne writing didn’t you?
Miep: Yes, We would always try to make it as nice as we could and sort of pass the time so one time I said to the others: Oh, I’m just popping upstairs for a chat. When I came into the room I was slightly blinded by the sun and suddenly I saw Anne sitting there. She was writing intently. I stood there for a few moments wondering what to do. She suddenly looked up at me with a very hostile look. She seemed to think I was spying on her. I was shocked for a second because I hadn’t seen her like that before. I stood rooted to the spot, but then her mother came into the room who had heard the door. She seemed to be trying to save the situation so she started to explain that Anne liked to write. I knew that. Anne slammed the book shut and looked at me haughtily. “Yes.” She said. “I write about you as well.” “Well, that’ll be something” I replied before leaving quickly. I was quite shocked and couldn’t stop thinking about it rest of the day. We didn’t talk about it again.

She then proceeds to explain what Anne’s bedroom looked like. Her father surprised her with the pictures to stick on the wall.
Miep: What a treasure she was. Such a lovely child. She always liked to have her hair perfect. ________________________
This was the main room of the van Daan family. It was also the kitchen and dining room. This fireplace here was used to burn trash. 8 people lived here for over 2 years. Over here was Peter’s bedroom and up there an attic.

I actually had another person in hiding at home. I didn’t tell them that because it would have made then very anxious. I tried not to tell them everything that was going on in the news. Mrs Frank and Mrs van Daan would start crying. Anne however, always wanted to know.

The 4th of August started like any other day. I went up first to get the shopping list. I promised I would be back soon. I went back downstairs. At around 11 the front door was opened and a man came inside with a gun aimed at us. He told us to stay where we were sitting and not move. We were shocked. Mr Koophuis looked at me and said: Miep, it’s over. I got my money straight away. I waited for my husband because he was going to have lunch with us that day. I ran to him when he came and gave him the money. Mr Koophuis looked at me as well and said: Miep it’s over, you can go. I told him I was staying. A few moments later Mr Koophuis was called by one of the soldiers and so I was alone. It took a long time and I had no idea what was happening to the others. After quite a while I saw someone give the keys to Mr Koophuis and said something in German which gave me the impression they didn’t think I was part of the plan. Mr Koophuis pressed the keys into my hand and told me: Miep, try and stay out of it. Save what you can. A few moments later a Dutch helper of the Germans sat opposite me and called for another cart to come. Later I heard another door open and heard the leader talking with a Wenen accent. I thought to myself: this is my chance! He comes from the same town as me.
He seemed to realize I was part of the plot. I then said to him: “Oh you come from Wenen? Me too!” He stood still for a moment and when he came back to his senses he grabbed some papers and saw that I was indeed born in Wenen and married to a Dutch man. He threw the thing at my head. He said something to the small Dutch coward and left. The Dutch coward started yelling at me what I was thinking helping the jews and how shameful I was to my country. He stood there for a long time swearing and throwing insults at me. I didn’t see the point in talking back. I was completely numb. After a while he stopped pacing and stood in front of me looking me in the eyes. He seemed to realize...two people from the same town...one helping the jews and one killing them. His face turned ever so slightly more friendly. He started talking insults about my husband. This was probably not very clever of me, but I got very angry at him. Keep your hands of my husband I told him angrily. He had nothing to do with this. He turned towards the door and gave me one last look: “ I will be back” he said. Until the end of the war I lived in fear that he would come take me. That never happened though.
Interviewer: Did you see the Franks leaving at all?
Miep: I only heard them coming down the stairs. I didn’t dare leave my chair. They all left and I was the only one left.

Interviewer: What did you do once you left?
Mr Gies: I went straight away to a street not far from here, to the brother of Mr Kleiman. I told him what happened. We then went to see what was happening from the bridge. We saw that the door opened and the cart was right against the building. The soldiers stood in a way that we couldn’t see exactly who was coming out.

Miep: At around 5 my husband returned with the other man. We locked the door downstairs and went up to the Annex. Luckily I was able to open the door with a duplicate key. It was a huge mess, all the cupboards and drawers open with everything on the floor. Then on the floor I spotted Anne’s diary. I was still in shock and upset and I shakily picked it up. We were still afraid that the men would come back. We picked up as many things as we could in case someone would return and take them. My husband took all the library books and Mr Dussell’s books. We couldn’t take everything. I was the last to leave. I snatched Anne’s “kapmanteltje” off the coat rack at the last minute. I put the diary in my desk drawer and didn’t lock it. Luckily I was able to keep my curiosity in check. If I had read the diary I feel I would have had to burn it as Anne didn’t want anyone reading it.
We never heard of our dear friends again. They were all transported to Westerbork and from there on to Auschwitz. From there on Margot and Anne went to Bergen-Belsen, sick and starving.
Interviewer: When did you hear what happened
Miep: My husband heard first. At the central station.
Mr Gies: I asked everyone if they knew of the Franks. For ages nobody knew. Until one day I heard that someone had seen Otto Frank and that he would be returning. I then rushed home to tell Miep.
Miep: The moment he came home he said: I have a good message: Otto Frank is returning! Then something very peculiar happened. The moment he said that, we turned towards the window and there was Otto Frank!
He rang the doorbell and we rushed to greet him. The first thing I asked was: “Edith?” He said: “she won’t come back.” I still had hope for the children. Otto stayed living with us for 7 years. I still had the diary in my desk. I didn’t tell him about it. I wanted to give it to Anne when she returned. After a month and a half we got a letter from a nurse who had been in the same camp with Anne and Margot until the last minute. She was there when they died. She told us they would not be coming back. I then opened the desk drawer and handed the diaries to Mr Frank with the words: “This is the heritage of your daughter.” He took them to his office and called me an hour later. He said: “Miep: I don’t want to talk to anyone.” He took them home. He also translated them into German to send to his mother who couldn’t read Dutch. He kept calling me and kept saying: “Miep! Look at what she’s written!” I couldn’t. It was too painful. Even when the book came out he kept telling me I should read it. I still couldn’t. Only when it was published a second time I decided to read it. I can hardly explain the feeling...it felt warm..a sense of relief...as if I was close to Anne again. The diary was Anne.
The end. I managed to translate the whole thing, though it took ages!!

Dankeschön für diesen wertvollen Beitrag. Mein Vater war zu Kriegszeiten noch ein jugendlicher Niederländer in Amsterdam, er heiratete nach dem Krieg meine deutsche Mutter. Unsere niederländische Familie hat meine Mutter immer akzeptiert, als Deutsche.
Ich war besonders stolz dass mein Vater Niederländer war und liebe meine Vatersprache sehr.
Das Buch von Anne Frank habe ich gelesen mit großer Sympati zu diesem Mädchen, aber auch mit tiefer Trauer über die 6 Millionen Schicksale die dieses Regim auf so grausame Art u Weise vernichtet hat. Es ist u bleibt die dunkelste Zeit Europas. Beten wir dass es nicht zu einem dritten Weltkrieg kommt, denn Kriege werden vor Regierungen beschlossen u es müssen unschuldige Menschen ihr Leben opfern. Danke an alle Menschen die den Mut hatten den jüdischen Menschen in Obhut zu nehmen u zu verbergen, ihnen hätte man besondere Ehrungen verleihen müssen.
Mijn oma was doopsgezind. Ook zij moest vluchten. Met mijn oom Dickie, die door het oorlogstrauma in 1946 overleed , Niet ouder dan 5 jaar geworden. Mijn moeder op de arm als baby. Tot haar dood aan toe is het haar altijd bijgebleven. Hoe oma schuilend onder een treinstel. Met 2 kleine kindertjes, Terwijl de Duitse soldaten langs marcheerden. De angst voor velen die weggevoerd werden. De angst voor velen die het wel mochten overleven. Maar waar de oorlog nooit voorbij is geweest,

wat jammer hé anne , dat het achterhuis al vele jaren niet meer was en is zoals toen jullie het achter moesten laten ! in 2000 voelde het als of je er nog was ,maar 2013 was die hele sfeer dat gevoel verdwenen en waarom ? omdat geld een te grote rol ging spelen bij de mensen die het runnen !!! ,maar voor mij blijft Amsterdam het Achterhuis jou naam in ere houden gewoon omdat je mijn voorbeeld bent !! Rust zacht.

Ik heb het boek niet gelezen en dus weet ik niet of dit op het boek is gebaseerd. Op Netflix is een nieuwe film die “mijn beste vriendin Anne Frank” dacht ik. Het gaat om het leven van miep rond de oorlog. Hele mooie film

Deze vrouw was echt een held ✌✌✌✌✌✌
Toch zegt ze : Het was niet genoeg (wat ze hebben kunnen doen, om vervolging te *helpen+ ontkomen. In de Jaren 30 valt op de deurmat van oa Nederlanders de pamphlet, komt in opdracht van de SS , de buren - daarin staat bepaald wat een mens is, de 'Uber' en de 'Unter' ) waar was de kritiek die je van een overheid of oranje zou mogen verwachten, ik zou me serieus afvragen of de Duitse buurjongen die wel piano kan spelen zoveel mocht 'losmaken' - zelfs nog tijdens de oorlog etc, maar na de oorlog is het kransleggen en ideologische huishouding een nog vreemder tafereel, ja dan wel .
'Het was niet genoeg' - Als je geen tranen meer hebt om mensen te helpen, laat dit beklijvend zijn, voor alle mensen die elkaar willen beschermen, zonder onderscheid tussen 'afkomst' en andere onzin. Het is pure essentiële menselijkheid dat we terug moeten leren...
Ben er stil van. Dankzij Miep is het alsof ik erbij ben geweest. Anne kan goed schrijven, (en al helemaal voor een kind tussen de 13 en 15 jaar) maar Miep kan echt goed vertellen. Bizar om te beseffen dat toen in 1987 het 42 jaar geleden was en 1987 is al 35 jaar geleden. Je ziet daar nog veel meer hoe de prinsengracht was daadwerkelijk in die tijd was, ipv dat moderne museumgebouw wat er nu naast staat. Het ziet er nu vanaf de buitenkant zo anders uit daar. Niet meer zoals vroeger en dat vind ik zo jammer. Die pandjes konden de internationale massa toerisme van bezoekers niet meer aan, dus ik begrijp het wel, maar betreur het ook. Toch is het jammer dat die rij panden niet meer is zoals het in Anne der tijd was. Daarnaast interesant dat ze op de vliering zijn. Daar kun je tegenwoordig ook niet meer komen. 6 juli is het 80 jaar geleden dat ze te voet vanaf het merwedeplein in zuid naar de Jordaan liepen. En wandeling van een uur (want joden mochten niet met de tram). Bedankt is te weinig voor het echtpaar Gies en de andere helpers... Ze waren zo dichtbij, want het einde van de oorlog naderde. We kunnen nog steeds niet met zekerheid zeggen wie van die schuilplaats opeens afwist en wie ze verraden had. Toeval geloof ik niet in. Ze kwamen met pistolen binnen. Ze waren overtuigd dat er onderduikers zaten, maar wisten niet hoeveel. Aangezien diegene het aantal niet wist, kon het ook niet iemand zijn die fam Frank en van Pels kende. Of diegene deed als of er weinig onderduikers zaten, maar wist wel beter. Enkel om een dwaalspoor te creëren niet verdacht te worden bij de helpers. Wie weet kreeg uiteindelijk iemand van die panden erachter een vermoeden met die afgeplakte ramen van het achterhuis. Maar toch blijft het een raadsel hoe iemand dit te weten is gekomen. God zege al deze geweldige mensen. Ik heb er geen woorden voor. Dit onrecht laat mij niet los. Nooit niet! Rust in alle vrede lieve Anne. Jouw nalatenschap is jouw winst op degene die jou het leven niet wilde schenken. Degene die jou het overleven uiteindelijk onmogelijk maakte. Uiteindelijk leeft jouw overwinning voort. De hele wereld leert waarderen als zij jouw dagboek lezen. Waarderen en hoop houden waren buiten jouw schrijftalenten, nog een mooie en krachtige eigenschap. Je Gertjan Horjus.

Miep Gies: The memories start coming back. It's like coming home. You know the way, and it is sometimes difficult to know that the people are no longer here.
Voice-over: Miep came to Amsterdam from Vienna as an 11-year-old girl, on this picture from 1933, she is 24 years old.
In the same year (1933) she started working for Otto Frank. In July 1941 Miep marries Jan Gies. Otto Frank is present at the wedding, together with his youngest daughter Anne. A year later, July 1942, Otto Frank decides to go into hiding together with his wife Edith and his daughters Margot and Anne. Anne has just turned 13. Later, Mr van Daan also went into hiding in the Secret Annex with his wife and their only son Peter. Finally there is an 8th person in hiding.
This picture is taken after the war. Otto Frank is in the middle. On the left Miep Gies en Joop Koophuis, on the right Victor Kralen en Ellie Vossum. Otto Frank is the only one of the eight people in hiding to survive the war. The Germans invaded the Secret Annex on August 4, 1944

Ich heule seit Stunden. So eine herzensgute Frau. Het is ongelooflijk moedig wat zij en haar familieleden hebben gedaan. Rust zacht miep.
Ich . Ik hoorde hiervan toen ik 6 jaar was. in 1959. Van de oorlog en al het andere ,niet te beschrijven andere. Het Dagboek van Anne was 1 van de 1e boeken die ik las. Wat moet je zeggen. Stilte juist, of er eeuwig over praten. Dat laatste maar. Heel moedig hoe Miep er nog over kan vertellen toen, van toen, en wat ze heeft gedaan met de andere hulpen. Ik wist niet dat ze er een boek ook nog over schreef. Ik schaam me nog altijd over het nederlandse volk van toentertijd. Bij mij in de straat hebben ook onderduikers op zolders ,,gewoond,,. En in deze stad weet ik nog een adres, wat ik ooit moest opruimen. De stoelen stonden er nog op een heeeeeele hoge zolder, met een heeeeeele lange trap. Zo,n glazenwasserstrap tot 4 ,5 hoog. . Eind jaren ,90. Kaarsenstandaards. Ik weet wel dat het allemaal niet mals was, de bezetters. Wat zou ik zelf hebben gedaan ? Wat Miep zei als laatste, : Het was te weinig. In Nederland zijn de meeste mensen van Europa gemiddeld, in de kampen omgekomen. Dat is toch om je dood te schamen ? En nu altijd dat opgeschep van : Wij doen het beste, mbt de mensenrechten. Ondertussen worden er ,,gewoon,, weer kinderen uitgewezen, 2018 ja, die hier al jaaaaaaaaren wonen, of geboren zijn. De taal van ,,hun,, land niet kennen.... Wat betekendt dat voor hun geestelijke ontwikkeling, voor als ze volwassen worden ? Een trauma so wie so. Dat noem ik kindermishandeling. Nee, ,,het,, is niet te vergelijken. Maar......

Miep stelt dat het huwelijk, ook onder druk is komen staan, het dreigement van de 'rechercheur met een Weens accent' (gestapo) - daar is een context van het pan-euro intercontinentale netwerk (overleven.. 'weer een pogrom' - )waarvan ik van vermoed, dat Otto Frank daar -een grotere rol speelde dan hij daar zelf over vertelde, zelfs na de oorlog (…)

Als je ziet hoeveel pijn het na al de jaren nog steeds doet/deed bij deze prachtige mensen kan ik niet begrijpen dat hier in Nederland mensen zijn de willen dat mensen die uit oorlogsgebied gevlucht zijn, niet welkom zijn hier.
