The true Biblical Jordan is in South Africa, on border between Eastern Cape and Lesotho, hidden in a nature reserve, where they also claim to have Lot's wife's burial site. Not far from the river is the Biblical Zoar (in Cape Town, where Lot ran to, from Gomorrah, which is Alexandra Johannesburg) and the river is not far from Mambre (Cape Town, where Abraham settled, from Egypt).

Thank you Professor Lipnick for this clear explanation of the meaning of the river Jordan in the Bible. John the Baptist and the Lord Jesus Christ both descended into the water of the river and thereby both got (very) wet. Joshua and the Israelites went into and out of the river on dry ground. Should we draw any meaning from this difference? I am inclined to think that the baptism (immersion) of the Israelites was only symbolic but that of the Lord Jesus Christ was real - as was His death - into which we are baptised when we are immersed in Him (Romans 6:3) or am I trying to be deeper than the scripture would intend us to understand?

Thanks for this. And in the Gospels, Jesus' begins his journey to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise - his descent - at Caesarea Philippi, apparently considered the principle source of the Jordan. If I'm not mistaken, he mostly follows the Jordan down to Jericho, and then inland to Jerusalem.

I look at it like God dwells in the west, and sin is in the east. Adam and eve had to leave Eden (the presence of God) to the east. West bound travelers traveling out of east (sin) do a ritualistic cleansing (baptism) before entering where God dwells. Notice that the eastern gate is always to remain open for the westbound travelers.
