I'm sad that the reviewer didn't like the story line- I've always loved it - but then this was my very first game as a kid. I wish the reviewer had summarized the plot a bit more -if they had people would be able to gauge for themselves weather or not they'd be into the story at all - That being sad I'm super happy to find a review of the game at all and I'm glad I wasn't the only one who's enjoyed / experienced the game. Keep on doing what your doing and have a great day :)
The plot is that important to you... You have 2 worlds set in different times. craymels. Vast world exploration. SKill moves that make the person feel immersive. Fringing is fun. The end game is pretty awesome. So many different things in this game. They also have a card battle game which I know I've spent quite a few hours over its life cycle. This game offers a whole lot of value but this reviewer just talks down on it like it's some generic RPG. I've replayed this game 5-6 times or more over. Ya didn't talk about the character development and the evolution of the friendship between the characters. 3:25 ~ Graphics are not good??? You show the first 1 hour of this game and criticize the game like you only played it for that much it seems. You don't enjoy the sound??? I think it's one of the best gaming soundtracks in RPG history. The voice acting was alright. The best voice acting in this game is probably Meredy's mentor. Like one of the comments said it seems like you played this after 2006 or something bcuz you seem to under-value the game and think everything in it should be perfect. The flaws in this game are what make it great imo. It makes other features stand out. It's not as bad as this reviewer makes it out to be.
That literally doesn't even sound that triggered. Please bring that overdone cop-out argument out of here you aren't TRIGGERED for having a different opinion.
To be fair I think Tales of Eternia has held up really well on the Playstation 1 and I think it's PSP port also looks and plays very well too. I'll be honest I'm probably not what you'd call a Tales fan but diving into this game I really liked it and it made me want to check out this series and what it has to offer and I'll always appreciate it for that. Unfortunately I think this game was always destined for obscurity as on PS1 it flew completely under the radar and on PSP it was only localised in for Europe and eventually outshone by the very impressive Tales of the World Radiant Mythology.
Since this review I've actually played through the game multiple times and it has grown on me considerably I'd love to one day re evaluate it and share my thoughts.
TheGamingPilgrimage Ah, a retrospective of a retrospective. :) Bless you Pilgrim I didn't mean to imply I didn't enjoy your review I actually think it covers a lot of great points more to how the game stands up in the Tales series as opposed to as it's own. I'd love to see that though if I'm being honest the PSP version is clearly the superior version of the game. Pace is what that console was designed for and Eternia delivers that very well. I'd love to hear what you think mate :) I guess that's the difference between which games are the best and which games are our favourites.
Aww, I really liked the cast of this game...over Destiny's cast. I don't really see how Destiny's cast was all the exciting over Eternia's when they can be described in a single word as well. I think a lot of the 'blandness' of these characters have to do with the English releases butchering them. Both Eternia and Destiny had rather amusing skits that were cut out of the English releases. I've seen many of the Eternia's skits and they're pretty hilarious.
Means a lot to hear that! Some ones to look out for are; Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Abyss and Graces F they are all great games that I can whole heartedly recommend. They are also probably going to be the easiest to find aside from Xilla.
I really like this game actually, one of my favourite psp games, the story was actually good, I especially enjoyed Keeles' character development. I think you were a little harsh on the game, but you do have some solid points.
Thanks again for the upload - loving this retrospective review. I haven't been much of a fan of the newer RPGs that are coming out these days, so looking to get back into some of the older ones that I may have missed. My wallet won't be happy when I'm done watching your series though ;)
The name change was not due to consistency. Eternia was trademarked in the USA. The future PSP release of the game in europe saw the name return to Eternia.
2:08 To be fair, Lightning had her reasons being a douchebag like not trusting Snow for being reckless and him being the reason why Serah turned into a crystal.
No she didn't have any reason, 13 was just a mess all the way around wich is why it has universal hate. The only reason it has fans is cuz its either someones first Final Fantasy OR more commonly people like it for its underdog status. I noticed people have a heart for games that are hated making them like it more than its more successful counterparts. 13 legitimately has too many flaws that are NOT opinion based and Lightning is a bitch for NO reason at all
This is the game that got me into the tales series. After this i played phantasia and destiny up to berseria. Beat this gsme 5 times, i kept coming back because of how good the music is and the story of two worlds. Plus this is the best tales in PlayStation era. Now i understand you don't like the game but for a 2d game this is the best you can get with solid battle system in a ps1 game.
This game has everything that I could have asked for : huge step foward on the battle system, memorable battle musics, and beautiful graphics. Also, looking for optional content is very rewarding. About the story ... I don't think I can ever take the game seriously with all those minigames, and silly shout-outs to the 2 first Tales of (the Cless cameo battle and the destiny summon are the biggest of them)
This is a great tales game.It does have a good story but I do like destinys plot more. Even so, this game has the gameplay beat hands down and I like the characters in both games.
please replay this and I will watch, then do a re-review (as an additional incentive you will get TONS of views and thumbs ups and subscribers) for a more honest review.
gabriel sylvestre they got all lot of similarities. Hell the first Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia are basically the same story with different plot devices!
I personally like Vesperia, Symphonia and Abyss above all else, as well as Phantasia's port on the PSX (there's a patch, if you don't mind being a pirate like 75% of the internet)
either way, the beginning of the game is still amazing and makes you want to see whats happening next. Once you meet Melody, the games gives you many reasons to see what will happen next and learn more about whats next. Even if he only played 5 minutes or 15 minutes in before making this I think he was in a bad mood when playing this or maybe played another game that put him in another mentality and perhaps his playthrough of this was uncomfortable to him.
Hooray for title/numbering confusion! :P Hahaha. The battle system definitely looks a lot smoother than Tales of Destiny. And the sprite work reminds me a lot of Star Ocean Second Story. Not to surprising with them being "cousin games", so to speak. :P I honestly wasn't aware of the PSP version of this game. Sounds like a more affordable option than hunting down the PS1 game. I'll have to look into it.
I can't belive I sold this game for five bucks in 2004 to buy a DS. One of my biggest regrets, it's so expensive now. IMO it's one of the best 2D JRPGs.
Wow... clearly you are playing a different game. i find it mind blowing that you talk down about this game. it's your opinion and your in your right to have it, but wow. talk about out of your element
I actually really enjoyed Eternia, I just don't really care for the story or characters in this, which seems to be an unpopular opinion. However, I'm not sure where this idea that I hate it comes from as I have seen in the comments of this video. Granted this was one of my earliest (and in my opinion one of my weakest) videos that I have put out on this channel, the editing, scripting and voice over are all over the place. Looking back I think I did a poor job of articulating my problems with the story and should have focused on what I did enjoy for longer, as I complain for way too long.
Yo. just to clarify, i Really don't want to sound offensive so forgive me if i sound confrontational but im freakin passionate about this series which is probably obvious but. your probably right about your approach on these vids cuz i'll be honest i stopped watching a couple of minutes in and was done and completely turned off. like. it was hard to take this serious because it really sounds like you were playing a different game. Opinions may vary and that's fine when it comes to weather the game or story or movie whatever. reached you or didn't reach you, what i find problematic is when critics start to talk about things about a product or in that product that go beyond the opinion and are Factually wrong. again, didn't go through it all and by the comments. you already sound like you know if that was the case. in Any case this to us is one of the best games in the series that paved the way with revolutionary ideas at the time for rpg's that hadn't really been explored yet. and Wolf team bless em at the time for what they had to deal with. after the butchering of the Phantasia story just to make the good game they could muster with the lead guys there to guide them only for them to bail at the last minute. then WT going on their own to create what is pretty much a rough draft game being the first Tales of destiny hence why it pushed No boundaries and Begged for a remake in the future. this game. ToE was their 2nd attempt on their own and what an amazing achievement this was it was a Huge success in Japan and even over here while it was buried under the release of the next gen consoles coming out at the time, nobody had anything really of worth bad to say about it. the story was really good with characters that were well defined. the Lead character Reid was Not your generic action hero. for almost 2 disc's he wanted absolutely Nothing to do with the adventure and tried to bail any chance through means of passing the burden on. the twist towards the end really made sense in explaining why everybody was and turned out the way they were. it's just interesting how most of the major hard hitting points in this game's story goes over people's head until it's explained. Story isn't what drives my interest. over all for a movie or a game the story is a simple 3 act structure. what happens with your cast in-between all that is what compels players or what should compel and encourage them to continue forward and want to see them through it. and this game succeeds. forget the story for a bit, even the game-play was impressive. fast paced side scrolling action at it's finest that's not weighed down by any of the clunky handicaps the first 2 games had. good as those are, the remakes were good additions and Phantasia most recent remake, copies Eternia down to the T pretty much. a lot of this probably sounded like rambling to you but that's understandable. this series just means that much to us that we can jabber jaw on it endlessly. good luck in the future if you choose to revisit this series.
PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU TO REPLAY THIS GAME FOR STORY (I don't care if you use cheats just to focus on story) AND REDO THIS REVIEW!! I feel asthough you were in some kind of negative mood of unprepared mentality when diving into this game. This game clearly is the strongest in story and characters of all the Tales Of games. We are aware that you may have a different opinion but Ive had to pause the video every point you made to analyze if you were making a fairly debatable point and most the time you wernt. All I'm asking is for a replay (that I will watch and recommend to others if uploaded) and a re-review, Noone would mind a re-review and it would infact highly increase your credibility and respect amongst your fanbase easily as this game is important to most of if not all the fans of this franchise.
btw I just recently beat this game so I don't have any Nostagia for it to distort my judgment of this amazingly memorable JRPG that I feel I can always remember years after playing it. The other Tales of are all generic and forgettable to me but this one stood out and will remain in my top JRPGs of all time (Ive beaten every Jrpg on the ps1 and ps2)
In his defense, the characters and definitely the plot aren't as good in eternia especially when weighted against destiny. Also I don't get a tone or sense of bashing the game at all either. Destiny's plot was actually pretty solid and cohesive compared to most tales games. Eternias claim to fame (at the time and by comparison to destiny) is gameplay, although I do like certain character's. I Like Reid's blah blah attitude, Keele and Ras doing the OPPOSITE of what you'd expect them to do.. Ras in particular breaks the formula for his character archetype as unfleshed out as he and other characters are it still keeps him unique compared to characters like Alvin. The series only optional (???) airship the aibird which are also the series best airship, ost is arguably one of the best in a tales (not saying much) and introduction to a refined mystic artes system. I do disagree with his Hearts R review tho on most points.. disagree with that heavily but once again personal opinion (and you like Gall so). Love that game, the combat, counter system, ost and characters in Hearts to me are great sappy undertone and all but I feel the same about graces albeit I like hearts R overall cast and in graces I really only like Pascal and Richard. >.> Anyway keep up with the excellent reviews.
Em... you say this game only had VA during battles and some random phrases but in actuality vast majority of the plot important scenes and character interactions have voice acting. I imagine it might be an emulation glitch since it's very clear you use an emulator here (the tiny Reid next to HP and TP is way too detailed considering the original resolution of the game). The voice acting itself is one of those so bad it's good (like Valkyrie profile 1 but with more enthusiasm), honestly it fits with the cheesy nature of the game and I'm glad they kept it tin the PSP port (also the Japanese voice overs weren't much better). All of the characters have very fitting voice actors too, you can almost imagine they'd look similar to the characters in the game, the best one in my opinion being Meredy who actually sounds like a foren person speaking a non native language.
My main problem with this was the same problem I had with Graces f: lack of interesting villains. I'm used to Tales games having very prominent villains, with multiple henchmen frequently confronting the heroes. This barely has any, and it was even more disappointing to me since Brotherhood of Gaming hyped up the villain so much, then to find out he's not even really in it! (being vague deliberately due to spoilers). Never checking their videos ever again, especially after the shit they pulled in the comments here.
TheGamingPilgrimage THIS IS MY FAVORITE TALES OF GAME!! It has the best characters, story, and is the best Tales Of game ever made 100% I admit. This blows the previous games out of the water and tells a better story with more interesting characters and depth. This is easily the most memorable of the franchise. I think you may have ben in a certain mood when playing it that may have clouded your approach to this game. Ive played all the Tales Of and had a difficult time getting into them all as this one was the only one that captivated me to keep playing more. Its not that the other games in this franchise are bad....Its just that they are all painfully generic games with painfully cringy characters that are also generic. This game is fully unique and holds up till this day, I think you should defiantly rethink this one as you seem to get all your points wrong (and not in an opinionated kinda way) in terms of story, character, and overall experience this game provides. I recommend trying this game again as it is the single most underrated gem of the entire series and if everyone who watched your video reads this comment, I hope this video does not deter you from the game as this is easily the best experience you will have this any Tales Of game. This game is extremely similar to the first Grandia wich is a classic and arguably the best JRPG on the PS1 in some eyes. P.S. - I just recently beat this game so I do not have nostalgia for it
That is the MAIN reason why it was changed yeah lol, Mattel owned the rights to the word "eternia" so you're right, the name branding thing mentioned here was probably a secondary reason
now this is just a hypothetical theory of mine on why Darren/Reviewer didn't like the characters and story that much.. and the reason for that is....THE VOICE ACTING/OVERS!! think about it for a minute, when you're going to engage/immerse yourself in a game that features voice acting both in-game cut scenes and in-game battle 80% of the time it kind of takes its toll on you especially when the VA's are BAD and it stacks up literally to the point of even dropping the whole game! and the only CURE for that is by playing the UNOFFICIAL UNDUB version of eternia for the PSP! trust me, replaying this game feels like a fresh brand new one that can change anyone's mind about how bad eternia was, i know because im currently playing it!
I would disagree with u on most on what u said abt this game... Maybe u played this game around 2006+ not sure but this game is awesome! Specially during the year it came out. Im pretty sure some kids wil like dis game at this generation. Some might not coz they probably got spoiled alrdy by this veryyyy nice improvement of graphics and gameplay lol.
The first 3 tales games are the best ones in my opinion, with the first game Tales of Phantasia on SNES being the best one if the 3. Once they moved from 2D to 3D battles I lost interest in the series.
Personily, don´t like Eternia that much and agree witth you about that. the plot isn´t that good also are the caracters, but the gameplay makes fun and that is one of the reasons why I love the series so much. But the worst thing for me was the english voice cast. For me it has one of the worst voice acting ever. the only one who was good was Meredy, but the rest.... I know a lot people doesn´t think so, but thats my opinion. I have the PSP version off the game (I´m from germany btw) and damit I couldn´t stand that very long so that I finally turn off the voices. I also have the Undub version and the acting is so much better. sry for my bad english
Im actually enjoying this game much much more than Destiny...
I think you are not fair with this game. It's the best 2D tales hands down!!
yes it is EASILY
Its a good rpg especially for the time. I hated the characters in ff7 and ff8. Its more memorable than other rpgs i played.
I guess i'm alone because i definitely enjoyed the story and the anime as well.
Did you know the English Va for Reid is also the voice of Sly Cooper?
This is a favorite for me. Really enjoy the gameplay and characters
this is probally my favorite tales game and I really enjoyed the story and characters

Hey really enjoyed this video. Never played any of the Tales of games but this is a great retrospective, can't wait for more!! Subbed :P

Damn it. I was gonna play Phantasia and jump ahead to the PS2 games. Now I wanna play this.
Thanks for another good review again ill be buying this if a see it, you cover alot in this review nicely done .

This is the game that got me into the tales series.

"Often have likeable characters..."
ToS2 and ToGf says hi.
The game was actually called destiny 2 to avoid copyright infringement with He-man cuz they're world is called Eternia
So... how long is this game?
Reminds me of Star Ocean 2nd Story or 2nd Evolution
gabriel sylvestre they got all lot of similarities. Hell the first Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia are basically the same story with different plot devices!
TheGamingPilgrimage dont forget, star ocen is the spiritual successor to tales
I personally like Vesperia, Symphonia and Abyss above all else, as well as Phantasia's port on the PSX (there's a patch, if you don't mind being a pirate like 75% of the internet)
I thought they changed the name for this due to the word Eternia being trademarked here in the U.S for He Man, could be mistaken

umm may i ask? i would love to play this game but cant play tales of destiny 1. so if i play this first would i not get the plot of the story?
+Wa Man They are completely separate games, no need to play 1 before the other.

This game looks beautiful
Em... you say this game only had VA during battles and some random phrases but in actuality vast majority of the plot important scenes and character interactions have voice acting.
The VA for Sly Raccoon voiced Reid.
P.S. - I just recently beat this game so I do not have nostalgia for it
I do now.
For the name change I thought that it was to avoid a lawsuit with whoever held the rights to He-Man.
That is the MAIN reason why it was changed yeah lol, Mattel owned the rights to the word "eternia" so you're right, the name branding thing mentioned here was probably a secondary reason
I miss the old school 2d version of tales, very beautiful skills and combat.
The story line is good
I got my hopes up by the title Eternia.
But its not motu.
Bummer.😞
I miss of this era...
now this is just a hypothetical theory of mine on why Darren/Reviewer didn't like the characters and story that much.. and the reason for that is....THE VOICE ACTING/OVERS!! think about it for a minute, when you're going to engage/immerse yourself in a game that features voice acting both in-game cut scenes and in-game battle 80% of the time it kind of takes its toll on you especially when the VA's are BAD and it stacks up literally to the point of even dropping the whole game!
and the only CURE for that is by playing the UNOFFICIAL UNDUB version of eternia for the PSP! trust me, replaying this game feels like a fresh brand new one that can change anyone's mind about how bad eternia was, i know because im currently playing it!
I would disagree with u on most on what u said abt this game... Maybe u played this game around 2006+ not sure but this game is awesome! Specially during the year it came out. Im pretty sure some kids wil like dis game at this generation. Some might not coz they probably got spoiled alrdy by this veryyyy nice improvement of graphics and gameplay lol.

i have a copy ;p
The first 3 tales games are the best ones in my opinion, with the first game Tales of Phantasia on SNES being the best one if the 3. Once they moved from 2D to 3D battles I lost interest in the series.
DO NOT AGREE! One of the best playing and beautiful graphics 2d RPGs ever. I have no idea what your griping about. For the time, this game is great.
This is my favorite Tales, of which I bought the umd for. I adore the characters and gameplay. I actually hated Destiny though
Eternia Is the best one tho
Looks like any "indie" game from today
what a boring review.
the reason tales of eternia is called destiny 2 is because of Heman, the lands of heman is called eternia and the name was owned by another company.
