God is diversity. It's either he's a black woman, a white man . The song is not about religion, nor does it mention anything about "mocking" God. It's about the freedom rights of the women, to "break the glass ceiling", the stereotypes that are made, a song to celebrate women for who they are and not for who they are believed to be. It's an anthem for each woman that still continues to fight for the love.

What? God isn’t human. So He isn’t a man or woman; We just use “He” (or “she” if you prefer) because that’s the only way we can conceptualize the notion as people without having to say “God”every time we talk about him. What, are we going to make up a new pronoun just for God lol?
I think that’s where people who didn’t grow up with religion, and also dont believe in god now, get confused. We only show God as a man to *children*, again, so they can conceptualize it. Kids dont have the mind span to understand what “omnipotent force” means LOL. When people DO talk about God as a man, they mean Jesus.... because in Christianity (or at least all the sects im familiar with), “Jesus” and “God” is kind of interchangeable, but God is also separate. This used to confuse the hell out of me as a kid and I was a pretty bright kid lol, so it makes sense they dumb it down. Like the father son and holy spirt are three different things and all the same thing, at once. LOL. Anyway, i think that’s where people who didnt study religion get confused and what makes them think, “How could anyone believe in a man in the sky controlling us!” When in reality, I’m Christian, Catholic (NYer lol) and I think it’s strange, especially knowing what we know about the universe, that anyone could think there’s not a creator... Now how much involvement that creator may or may not have, fine, but how could there not be one? Like, who caused the Big Bang lol. And I think a lot in the Bible is historically right.. like... “the flood” with Noah? Don’t tell me the pyramids & Sphinx arent from before that lol. So who knows? But, to each his own.
Jesus was human and Devine, so maybe that’s what you’re thinking of... and as he was a real person that existed in history (which is true whether you believe in him as a savior or not), we know that he was a male, but yeah, he was black, or at least a deep skinned middle eastern man. He’s described in the Bible as having (paraphrasing) “hair of wool and deep bronzed skin”. The one in the pictures whos white was made famous by DiVinci and was based on a model from that era (crazy story actually but this is long enough lol).

I think the throwing the hammer into the ceiling was specifically referring to "breaking the glass ceiling" in careers etc its often noted that there is a "glass ceiling" to how far someone can go in a career and usually women are the ones who "hit" the glass ceiling despite experience in the field etc etc. Just a thought on the fact that they destroyed a literal glass ceiling in that scene!

The thing is when this first came out everyone was so offended for no reason why would she say that “God is a woman” blah blah blah, I think in this case she was saying that in our society even God has been sucked into this system of patriarchy.. and she’s just on the opposite side of this argument being like “hey, what if God is a woman?” Idk if I explained myself well, but I don’t think this video should be so taboo as it was initially made out to be by pressed close-minded people 😅 btw great video, I always look forward to your reactions, you really know your stuff 💜
Exactly! Especially since God is supposed to be an all-powerful being, it doesn't even make sense that God would have a gender/sex. I'm not religious, but it would make more sense since God is all-encompassing, God would be both man and woman and everything else.

It was taught to us in uni that writers/authors of the bible made God a man is because at that time, men only listen to other men or someone higher than them that is a guy. So of course at their times, it would make sense that God is depicted as that. But hey, we don't know anything for sure until we get up there haha. But I believe that God is genderless as Jordan said. The only thing that never changes is his heart
Imma just say... before hen God made the first human, he said Im gonna make a life form as a mirror of my image, or kinda something like that, so he made Adam, Eve came later... So God is a Man Christianity...
@@grmp1992 The way I understood it ever since I was a child is that when God created us in God's image, it meant that we had some of His qualities: Free Will, the capacity of thinking, creativity, emotions, etc. Ya know, for example - how when we create cartoon characters we give them human like qualities not necessarily genitals.
( Btw in case I get any heat for using the pronoun "His" because toxic people exist, I used His because that's just what I'm used to, that pronoun has been in use for hundreds of patriarchal years.)

I'm a student of the Bible and God is represented as a Trinity... three persons in One. Humans are created in the image of God and we carry divine DNA, so it's not blasphemous to acknowledge that relationship, but we cross the line when we try to claim God's authority. The characters of the Godhead are Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father and Son are male, but the Holy Spirit is feminine. In the book of Proverbs, starting at 1:20, Solomon uses feminine pronouns to describe the spirit of wisdom. So technically (no offence to Ariana) one third of God is a woman 😉
I think this is a nice sentiment, but it isn't really 'counter culture' to be Christian. Most Americans are Christian, it's the most popular religion in the world, Christmas and Easter are widely celebrated even by non Christians. I'm not saying that being super religious to the point where you ignore scientific research and try to tell others how to live isn't looked down on, it is. But it isn't counter culture. It is the dominant religious and cultural force in the United States. Every president talks about God bless America and churches are given tax exempt status. There is actually a lot of prejudice against non Christians and especially people who are Muslim or atheist. I'm not saying this is what you were trying to get at, but a lot of times when people talk about Christianity being counter culture they are feeding into this false persecution complex that Christians in the United States have.

Also, I don't think you can 'um,actually' someone's religious beliefs since they are just that, beliefs. If Ariana believes in a female god that is no more or less valid than your belief in a 3 part god that is 2/3 male 1/3 female. Let's just all respect each others beliefs and not act like we have some special knowledge of unknowable things that others don't have. (And it being written in the Bible doesn't count as it being not a belief, it is still you believing that something written in the Bible is inherently true.)
@@icarusgotooclose I feel like I have to point out something here. Non Christians do celebrate stuff like "Christmas" or "Easter" but most of them don't view them as "Christians Celebrations". For example, I'm not a christian and I celebrate "Yule" instead of "Christmas" and "Ostara" instead of "Easter". Those Celebrations all have sort of the same essence, but they fall in different dates and are celebrated differently.
As an evangelical atheist (lmao) I thought it was hilarious that people were actually pissed off about the song and video. Like go find something to actually get upset about.... not someone’s artwork. As an example, if a video of US prison slave laborers was as popular as Ari’s video then everyone could be pissed about something that actually matters. And I know people can be mad at multiple things and being mad at one thing doesn’t negate your ability to be mad at another.... but come on people... I remember everyone losing their damn minds over this beautiful video! As someone who grew up in a toxic Christian household that oppressed woman, this song is literal therapy for me. It’s hard for me to get through it without crying because I have so much pain in my past from being seen as less than, or fundamentally bad, and full of sin and the need to conform to Old Testament views of woman... and this song is everything to me! I rewatched the video a billion times when it came out.
Anyways... it’s just insane to me that people were legit pissed about it. For me, it’s one of the most important songs ever.

i rewatched Troye Sivan's "Blue Neighbourhood" trilogy today and you immediately popped into my mind because the editing tells a powerful story across 3 songs (they are 3 separate music videos). The director made a director's cut from them and even though they made it on a limited budget, I think the editor went above and beyond.
