What most people do not understand is that the final question is never judged. Judges are to consider all aspects of the judging in completing their final ballot. I think Lu Parker was the prettiest among these three and was a great Miss USA.
Virginia should have won this hands down. I don't know what it was about this year, but it was a disaster at both pageants. I do believe she would have done well at Miss Universe, and deserved to be there. And I say both pageants were a disaster because Colombia should have won the Miss Universe pageant. Lu was a great and elegant person, but Pat beat her. And I believe she defended her answer the best, especially since she was the only one to choose against Tonya competing.
The odd thing is that the question, although related to Tonya Harding of that year, did not specify Tonya Harding or the incident associated with Tonya Harding. South Carolina answered as if Tonya was a part of the question. Virginia answered with Tonya as an example. North Carolina answered without much bias. Overall, great answers from everyone. Virginia was, and still is, my favorite not only cause I live in VA but because she had the best answer IMO
while everyone says virginia gave a good answer, why nobody specifically mention north carolina? she gave a good answer. i think she gave a better answer than virginia
While I thought they all did a good job at answering the questions, I would’ve picked VA for the win. She had the best delivery and defended her answer the best! So articulate! She would’ve given India a run for the money at Miss Universe 1994! There is a conspiracy that MUO didn’t want a third colored Miss USA to win in five years hence Lu won. I guess Pat’s answer was ahead of the times and the judges didn’t like it.
I think they all three answered the top question pretty good. Lu looked good at this pageant but she was a hot mess by the end of her reign. I probably would have given the edge to Virginia. She seemed more authentic to me.
For the final question, I've always thought that North Carolina had the best answer, simply because she did not name names. The question was almost certainly about Tonya Harding, but it's not best to jump to conclusions and name names. Miss N. Carolina was professional by answering based on the scenario, and answering just like how the question was stated, which was not naming names. However, this isn't a final answer pageant, but the overall performance. So Miss S. Carolina won, and she was the best overall.
@@alexsdb9712 She didn't adress properly the question and she sounds insecure in her answer. Lu went straight to the point with conviction, that's why I believe she deserved the best score in this segment.
@@camillebetancourt266 But that's why these contests are subjective. It's the impression the candidates make, and then there's also the impression they make to each judge and person watching.
@@alexsdb9712 I had to say English is not my mother tongue although I have a good level of it. I misunderstood a little bit the words of North Carolina but I still think SC gave the best answer. Her first comments: "anyone is innocent before proven guilty or..." was awesome and rightly answered with conviction. So the words and the delivery was perfect.
in USA, sincerity, integrity and honesty are very important, it comes through when we consider someone a good employee, a good miss usa, a good sports representative or even a suitable president. sadly speaking, many celebrities in usa, popstars or politicians or so, got lots of moral issues.
Stefania's gown fits for her beauty, Hollywood Glam Looks, like of 70's or 80's. I was also wondering how they'd chosen her to be Miss Universe 2009, for the fact that australia and dom. rep were higher than her. hmmm, could it be the Final look? but Stefania really is a True Beauty Queen. She just reall possess the qualities of being Miss Universe. Her Beauty made her won. :))
@Laceydog: if the final question isn't judge, then India should've won in MU in 1992, Alabama should've won MUSA in 1992, Venezuela should've won MU in 1993. just a clear example and prove your statement wrong.
Excellent answers from all three. As far as Lexlib question regarding Lu playing second fiddle to Virgina on finals. As a judge we might have someone way in front prelims but the chemistry of the girls change as your opinion as a judge will change.
Ok, but here's the problem. Virginia gave the best answer, but she also was ahead the whole evening. So how do the judges now pick South Carolina, who by the way, actually flubbed her question in the round before it. She took more time by asking them to repeat it. I agree with others where I think it was political. And in 2009, grant you I loved Stefania, she was gorgeous, but that gown was horrid, she shouldn't have made the cut, and she just made it being 5th in gown.
I'm actually stunned. I remember watching this 26 years ago and thinking that Virginia was great, but that South Carolina was the clear winner to me. But watching it back now ... Virginia slayed the Semis, she slayed the Top 6 question, and while her answer may not have been AS popular as South or North Carolinas in the Top 3 ... it was delivered so very well. Her answer was clear, substantive and delivered like a champion. I think he judges might've been split in the end because Virginia was leading the whole night long; giving a solid Top 3 answer, too. Wow.
Two judges, DeJoria and Garcia, consistently gave South Carolina much higher scores than Virginia throughout the night. I still believe overall, Virginia should have won especially viewing how she answered the final questions by today's mondern standards (actually took a stance, defended it, and delivered it well). But in 1994, Virginia's answer was probably viewed as too harsh and not "middle-of-the-road" pagaent patty enough, which likely cost her some of the judge's votes for 1st place (barring DeJoria and Garcia who were never going to vote for her as winner from the start).
@@phantasmex Agree about the Pageant Patty response back then. I'm gonna guess that those 2 judges you mentioned, plus 2-3 more were swayed by the answer and, that's all it took.
Totally agree with your comment above. Based on the final answers, VA should’ve won because she had the best delivery and defended her answer the best!! Such a shame that she didn’t win. She would’ve given India a run for the money at Miss Universe 1994!!
South Carolina had the privilege of listening to both final answers of the other two contestants. I don’t believe she heard them and truly believed she’d given the winning answer.
And while on the subject of political, this pageant was bad enough, but when India won over Colombia at Miss Universe, I couldn't believe it. This was a bad year for the pageant. And yes Sushmita was elegant, but I'm sorry Carolina Gomez was by far much better.
But that's the thing people forget, it must not be based solely on an answer especially the final question answer, but the overall impression. These pageants mention this everytime. Sushmita answered well, but overall Miss Colombia was the most ideal - beauty and brains. Her answer was outstanding too, but once again, the overall impression.
@@alexsdb9712 final question round can change the outcome of the pageant (where Sushmita won) or can still stick to status quo that will depend on the final look (where Manpreet lost)
@Laceydog Whatever. If you look at Miss Universe 1994, you will see that India won based on the final question. The judges do look at it. Some put more emphasis on it than others do.
The final question is not judged in the Miss USA, Miss Universe, or Miss Teen USA Pageants. Does it weigh in the judges marking their final ballot? Of course. There is however no point value to the final question, and that is the way it has ALWAYS been in the above 3 pageants.
I don't think that's true. As a Virginian myself, I was rooting for Pat right up until that question and what she said in her answer disturbed me. (1) Tonya Harding (wasn't) guitly because she hasn't been PROVEN guilty and (2) that she had mislead the public; her misleading the public hadn't been established until after The Winter Olympics that year. Lu gave the best answer because it was based in the fundamental principle of the American justice system- innocence until proven guilty.
Exactly right! You've hit on the reason Lu stood out. Not only that, but Lu had the finesse and stage presence that the others didn't quite have. And for her to have won the preliminary contest also says a lot about her. She had the look of a Miss Universe and ranked well in that competition. She was in the top 6 there and if you look at the scores I believe she ranked 4th.
Virginia clearly said that we cannot say harding guilty because she has still not proven guilty And she clearly explained that somewhere she does not have good moral values She gave best answer A final decision coming to a point Not a vague answer reaching no where Lu was an idiot though
Lu’s answer was good but the delivery could’ve been better. North Carolina was beating around the bushes, there was great content but she didn’t directly answer the question.
LOL, it's funny the final question didn't name an athlete by name ... though we all knew whom specifically this question pertained to. I think it's hilarious that the contestants named dropped Tonya instead of just answering the question. Virginia did have the most complete, analytical & best supported answer.
ALRIGHT !!! VIRGINIA GAVE THE BEST ANSWER !!! I GUESS, SOUTH CAROLINA WAS JUST REALLY A MISS USA MATERIAL !!! JUST LIKE WHAT HAPPENED IN 2009 MISS UNIVERSE !!!
