  • In order to transfer legacy video formats to digital media we need videotape recorders like this early 1970 half-inch open reel Sony CV-2100ACE VTR to function reliably. This video shows it working after having been in storage for over 35 years.

This very machine was used to recover a collection of tapes dating from 1970 and owned by TV Director David Mallet in which British comedian Les Dawson is seen joking with his Yorkshire TV audience in a recording break. In a two-part documentary by Shiver TV for ITV Studios, parts of the sequences can be seen near the beginning of programme #2 where David Mallet is viewing - with some excitement - recordings that haven't been seen since the day they were recorded. The programmes, called "Les Dawson Forever", were transmitted on the ITV3 network on December 22 and 23, 2016.
The CV2100ACE suffered a failure of motor capacitors (that had been working since 1968) during the transfer job which consisted of 13 x 7" reels of Sony B&W videotape and had to be hurriedly repaired in order to complete the job within the deadline.
