- On my drive back from NorCal back to Vegas I made a point to stop by the Sportsmobile West factory in Fresno California. I had filmed their vehicles before at the Overland Expo in Flagstaff Arizona but had never been to their factory.

for the most part ...being a 'Single-Camper Guy'...I WISH Benz would consider doing a 4x4 Metris 136WB Cargo Van!! would 'love' Sportsmobile'....to do a Pop-Up 'version'!! Love the 'smaller-size' of the Metris...& could be 'used' as a Daily Driver as well!!... oh well... i'll PRAY that it will happen....lol!

I was looking for a used Ford SMB poptop 4x4 van and the good ones get sold fast. My goal was $40-60k with about 100k miles. Some years had a diesel that were problematic but you can get them bulletproof. IMO family of 4 a poptop is the way to go.

I really like the SMB vans, especially the Ford chassis, but the price is really high for a new one. I think a used one could be a good option. I do think that a 3/4 ton American truck with a flatbed or slide in camper is a great option though. There are many good quality used trucks, with standard 4x4, diesel or gas engines, capable of carrying a camper. They are easy to service across North America, relatively reliable, easy to upgrade with all terrain tires, suspension, airbags and lifts, etc. the only thing I don’t like is the living space compared to a Van is more cramped and I’ve yet to see a pop up truck camper with a bunk bed like the sports mobile. Sportsmobile should license their pop top bed system.
Thanks Mixflip..the older vans with the Dana were the great set up...but now your Transit with the 4x4 set up..or like you said bring in your own van will be the better of all the vans you showcased here for serious off road. The tall Mercedes is a POS...too high and way too much mula..again thanks.
The Transit 4x4 is more expensive than the Mercedes Sprinter with similar options and size.
I'd love to have a small 4x4 pop top off the grid type of van with a lot of storage. I wish I could afford it. Gosh. Does anybody do old small vans or trucks? I love the video!

Some really sweet rigs there. Is this the route your gonna take to get your family into overlanding? Hey Mixflip are you gonna make it to Northwest Overland Rally in Washington State? We'd love to see you up here in Washington. I was just down in Arizona so I'm not able to make OE West but I am going to the NW Overland Rally.
mykalbee I'd like to make it up north if possible. I have family up there in Oregon and Washington. I also have ar least 2 companies offering me some trailers to borrow for videos so I have a lot of incentive to go. I just need time. Time is my enemy. I need to either retire or find a way to get paid to do TH-cam full time.

I rather see an elevated fix bed on the back with storage underneath that does stop it from having the pop up
Does anybody know if there is just one size of pop tops? Short body vans and long body vans get all the same pop top, right? Also, you don't see a pop top on a high roof sprinter. Is that not possible? Cheers

rv life I'll be camping for sure. Not sure what I'll be using. A couple companies want me to use their gear and I'm not sure which one I want to use. I my have my kids with me?
mixflip I bought my tickets with weekend camping included. My van is only 2x4 so I may cancel. I don't want to be embarrassed with the Overland crowd. I was going with my kids too. Do you have any insite if 2x4 is ok? Tickets were sold out for the campground option so I could only get the weekend camping within the Overland area (not the fort tuthill campground)
rv life 2wd is ok. The campsite is just the old fairgrounds in the woods. Its flat with paved roads. No 4x4 needed. It's a long walk to the expo from the camp grounds so bring bikes!!!!!!!!!!

bobby zeek simple answer....yes. I just need to wait for the dust to settle and see how all the other channels are effected when gun videos are posted. They give us rules but often over step the rules. All I have to do is make the videos public. They aren't deleted. They are all still there set on private.

Spent 108K in 2007 on an incredibly equipped hightop sportsmobile 4X4. Probably the worst decision in my haha. What a poor display of craftsmanship and even worse attention to detail. Had countless problems one being my roof leaked immediately and they still couldn't fix it after the 3rd visit to remedy it
bret easthouse I wonder if your was the exception or the rule? They seem to have Van's backed up for 15 months. Selling them like hotcakes. You would think there would be more reports of these problems with the advent of social media and TH-cam videos?
I'm just speaking up I guess that's all.

While you are making a video maybe your kids could be quiet and not be climbing all through the vans, a little respect for other peoples vans would be appreciated by Sportsmobile wouldn't you think ?
Duane 4 the Van's are demo vehicles and they are made for people with active families. Lighten up kids are kids. They play. They aren't wall art. These Van's are like club houses or tree house or forts to a 7 year old. This is the problem with America nowadays....everyone is so sensitive like a snowflake. One energetic little 7 year old triggers them.
