I never understood Death Metal until I got the job I have now. One of the guys i work with has a band and first off, I always thought Death Metal fans/bands were crazy in some way or another, but the guy I work with is super chill and is like a beacon of light whenever he gets to talk about what his band does or even the shows he helps setup for other bands. I think it was a good 4 months in I started to understand Death Metal but my god, some of the more history I learn the more insane it becomes.
I asked a metalhead about why they're always so chilld and he told me is that its pretty much unspoken rule that metalheads kinda have to be chill considering the genre itself has a bad wrap in the public eye
your band shirts in videos was always cool to see as a metalhead myself, loved this video i was so pumped to see you talk about metal and the stupid cool lore behind bm and their church burning antics. Would love to see more metal related content from you man!
I love how they based their whole lives off of being these hardcore bloodlust-y walking corpses, but then they try to incorporate references to a fantasy epic that centers around the unwavering love and friendship of a bunch of sensitive flowery characters. It sounds like they liked the bad guys in it. Kinda like Christianity is all about love and forgiveness but they think Satan is just the coolest guy. Kinda like some people who watch the boys and think Homelander is the true hero.
Black Metal is awesome, but just know that all the drama surrounding Mayhem and Burzum is not the face of Black Metal. They're not the originators and they're not what Black Metal is all about. Their music is awesome though, but they just get way too much attention for the controversies surrounding them, when Black Metal existed for years before them.

Great video! Few corrections, Black Metal started in England and then Sweden in the early 80s, (as you mentioned) a band named Venom created the name, image and some of the genre's sound, and it was then turned into what we know it as today by Quorthon from the Swedish Black Metal band Bathory. After that Mayhem came along. Oystein did not create tremolo picking, that had been used in Metal since the 70s, but it was certainly popular with Black Metal. There was also Hellhammer, who then became the more Death Metal oriented Celtic Frost, Celtic Frost being my favourite band of all time. Euronymous got his label name "Deathlike Silence" from another 80s Black Metal band from Germany, Sodom. Finally, a list of other classic first wave (81-91) Black Metal bands, because they rule! Bulldozer (Italy) Necrodeath (Italy) Onslaught (UK) Sabbat (UK) Poison (Germany) Master's Hammer (Czechia) Sarcofago (Brazil) Sepultura (Brazil) Mercyful Fate (Denmark) Mefisto (Sweden) Feel free to add more in the replies!
@@evigkrig4386 Not really, Bathory's second and third albums were the entire foundation for the "True Norwegian Black Metal" sound and Mayhem didn't deviate from it one bit.

'Until The Light Takes Us' and 'Once Upon a Time in Norway' are probably the 2 best documentaries about it if anyone is interested in more information. I'm glad you recommended UTLTU.
I've seen a lot of videos about this topic but yours is probably the best one I've seen. People always try to paint one of the Mayhem members as the hero of the story but truthfully, they were all very awful humans (some worse than others but you get the idea). They were young artistic visionaries, but they were bad people. Thanks for covering this. Two other great 2nd wave black metal bands are Immortal and Enslaved. I recommend the albums "At the Heart of Winter" and "Vikingligr Veldi". Ulver's "Bergtatt" is also a fantastic folk black metal album
Even Necrobutcher? Is he awful? Your recommendations are spot on. Though the last two Enslaved albums went right over my head. Borknagar is another good one.
@@johngavin1175 I mean Necrobutcher has said that if Varg didn't kill Euronymous then he would have. Obviously he could be joking but from the interview he seemed very serious about it
Bathory was my favorite growing up. Quorthon having that transition of black metal to viking to like an alternative sound always amazed me how diverse he was
To be fair, GHOST started as a black metal group called Repugnant, so they weren't so much 'inspired' by it as they were tied to it by being actually IN the scene (however they're swedish so purists might even snub Repugnant idk I love Repugnant).
I think it's less that Euronymous didn't think Dead would follow through with killing himself and more that he didn't care, and saw the potential ways he could take advantage of it if he did-- hence his immediate instinct to photograph the scene.
This is so random, but I literally went to the "Helvete" store yesterday (that is now changed to "Neseblod"). How coincidental that you covered this topic today!😆 This is a very good video! As a Norwegian black metal lover, there is so much crazy history behind this genre that is worth knowing! Thank you for covering it!

This video is about black metal
this video has nothing to do with death metal

I love how they based their whole lives off of being these hardcore bloodlust-y walking corpses, but then they try to incorporate references to a fantasy epic that centers around the unwavering love and friendship of a bunch of sensitive flowery characters. I’m a fan of both metal and lotr too, but like, I never considered associating them. Led Zeppelin is the rock band my brain always connects to Tolkien, as _on the nose_ as that might be lol
It sounds like they liked the bad guys in it. Kinda like Christianity is all about love and forgiveness but they think Satan is just the coolest guy. Kinda like some people who watch the boys and think Homelander is the true hero.

Bulldozer (Italy)
Necrodeath (Italy)
Onslaught (UK)
Sabbat (UK)
Poison (Germany)
Master's Hammer (Czechia)
Sarcofago (Brazil)
Sepultura (Brazil)
Mercyful Fate (Denmark)
Mefisto (Sweden)
Feel free to add more in the replies!
True. Euronymous and the gang thought the Swedish death/black metal sounded too produced and started a more raw grimy sub genre.
I would say dick dale popularized tremolo with misirlou in 1962 but it had been around long before that in classical music
@@evigkrig4386 Not really, Bathory's second and third albums were the entire foundation for the "True Norwegian Black Metal" sound and Mayhem didn't deviate from it one bit.
@@burningthefieldsSarcofago’s INRI deserves a mention. They were a big influence on Mayhem.
Yep Venom created the name but in my opinion Bathory are the true kings of Black Metal. Better than Venom in every way.

Great video bro i recently started getting into ndm and this introduced me to some of the history behind it.

To be fair, GHOST started as a black metal group called Repugnant, so they weren't so much 'inspired' by it as they were tied to it by being actually IN the scene (however they're swedish so purists might even snub Repugnant idk I love Repugnant).
GHOST is a completely separate project. They didn't start as Repugnant as far as I know, just that Tobias did vocals and guitar for Repugnant.
Repugnant was Death metal, sorry to be that guy lol
I think it's less that Euronymous didn't think Dead would follow through with killing himself and more that he didn't care, and saw the potential ways he could take advantage of it if he did-- hence his immediate instinct to photograph the scene.
Please make more metal content man, i would love that from this channel.
