I hike down to the Rio grande at the gorge at Wild Rivers. Where does it dry out? Why?

The Rio Grande often dries out south of Albuquerque down to Elephant Butte.

Yes, just south of Albuquerque starting in the growing season.

The water for the Rio Grande River originates from the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, much of that from the snowpack. Summer flows are helped out by the monsoon season.

Is this the only river that dry/dies or is it because it is in the dessert

The river dries for several reasons. It is is a desert, but goes dry mostly because water is removed to irrigate crops.

I never swam there but in the early 70's in El Paso. And did the river raft race there too. But my favorite places were the alto frio river, llano river (Flat rock, and dam in Junction).

Yep, Rio Grande River! Rio Grande could be Rio Grande Valley, Rio Grande High School, Rio Grande Silvery Minnow, Rio Grande etc, so technically, Rio Grande River!
