I'm used to this with a solo violin but it's very lovely with the viola, the lower pitch keeping the gentle voice company. And the voice is small, as of a man at the end of his strength. Finely conceived.
I love your voice and also your so gentle way of singing! A revolution in musical expression in classical singing - away from the exaggerated, loud and towards feeling and listening. Thank you for this revelation and: give us more of it Barbara, classical singer from Lübeck, Germany
Kia ora, Philippe. I love the sound of your voice with fewer instruments behind it, as in this piece. I am also loving hearing the difference in your control and range as time passes. Never stop singing, and I hope you can one day sing for us down here in Aotearoa. Nga mihi nui for sharing.
Hi Philippe! I'm a prospective choral / solo bass singer and I wanted ask you about high notes. Just... how. How does one sing high notes? Anything above middle C scares me and hearing low basses crush high Fs is insane to me. I try to vowel shape and stay relaxed when going up there but I just don't know what to do because no matter what happens and nomatter how relaxed I am, I always have trouble with my voice cracking or doing a gross sounding flip. Granted, I'm 18 so the voice thing is still a little wonky someetimes but I would like any consistency at all about it because some days I can sing up to high E with ease but some days getting a b3 out feels like I have to really focus on vocal technique to achieve it. It's annoying because I know a lot of bass/baritone rep doesn't venture very low and my subconscious seems to hold me back from my high range being consistently pleasing to listen to. I love your voice and you've really inspired me to become am operatic / choral singer beyond just college so thank you for that!
Breathe into the resonance. Block your ears and hum, can you feel where the resonance lies? Breathe there! (For me it is in the sphenoid area) In this way your body functions as a unit. Some people say “breathe into the vowel” or “breathe into the idea” , it keeps the breath buoyant and energized. And release your jaw!
@@philippesly Thank you so much for all the advice. I mean to give an actual response to this sooner but after seeing the initial notification I was very busy and just remembered to respond. I very much appreciate it and I will try to incorporate these tips into my singing

Would be better without the strings. Phillipe you need more piano solo plus vocal recordings so we can hear your magnifique pure voice. Also something moving like vivaldi, bellini, rossini? With a lot of legatos and cres/decres! Pure bass joy comes in a crescendo climax!
Brought me to tears, really. Thank you so much for this video.
Zum Weinen schön... sehr berührend!
Philippe, you are amazing, amazing, amazing.
I am your biggest fan, from Brazil.

Great way to start my Friday. Thank you!
And how many more Bach videos are on the top shelf of TH-cam that I have yet to discover
So nice with viola and baritone, wow.
Thank you Philippe for reposting this intimate and emotional piece of your brilliant singing.

Starkly beautiful and deeply moving.
