Performance: Scintillating Santoor: Pandit Satish Vyas

Raag-Mala Toronto and the Museum present Pandit Satish Vyas, one of India’s most acclaimed santoor players, and Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan, a powerful vocalist and descendant of the Agra Gharana musical lineage. Joined by Pandit Ashis Sengupta on tabla and Dr. Vinay Mishra on harmonium, they will perform a program of evening raags - improvisations based on musical scales that serve as the lifeblood of Indian classical music and have no traditional western equivalent.
This collaboration is part of our 2018/19 season, The Other Side of Fear, featuring acclaimed artists who have transcended fear through music, dance, and spoken word.

Pandit Satish Vyas is the son of the late legendary vocalist, Pandit C. R. Vyas, and he is the most senior disciple of santoor master Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. Over his thirty-year career, Satish Vyas has performed and recorded across the UK, US, Canada, Europe and Japan, and his albums have been released by HMV, Polygram (Universal), Venus, Navras Records, Music Today, and Sony Music.
Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan is a torchbearer of his musical lineage, who studied under his grandfather Ustad Ata Hussain Khan and his father Ustad Naseem Ahmed Khan. He teaches music at the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata.With support from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
