Great episode. I do want to mention that the studies Krystyna highlights are some of the most extreme cases of child neglect that exist. And psychologists historically love to focus on the adverse outcomes of trauma but rarely on people that adapted and got through it. Generally speaking, humans are actually quite adaptable, and it takes multiple traumas or problems, along with specific genes, to acquire some mental disorder. I.e., Living in poverty alone, for example, does not predict mental disorders.

Her bit about her Mom’s medication making her hallucinate hit me. We moved in with my grandparents to help care for them while they were still alive in their older age and my grandmother was severe bipolar (trauma from surviving the atomic bombing of Hiroshima) and at one point she was so loaded up on meds we found her in the hallway one night picking flowers out of the air and smashing her head into a wall to make the thoughts stop. Mental illness like that is a special type of hell for a person to learn to manage if they even can.
