Glad to see Catherine Parr finally getting her own story told. First woman ever to publish her own work in English. She was a very intelligent woman and was able to outwit the religious extremists who wanted her head. Also glad to see Anne Askew portrayed here. I've often thought that her tragic story deserves a film of its own too.
KP wasn't the first woman to publish her own work in English. Hello, Margery Kemp. Her visions were published in 14th century and Julian of Norwich was published prior to 16th century. There is a n autobiography of the dtr of King Alfred published 9th or 10th century in Anglo Saxon English on her orders. KP was the first Queen to do it.
Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe had their works transcribed by men. Both works existed in manuscript - Kempe's in one copy only, discovered in the C20th. Scribal publication was nothing like print publication. Juliana Berners beats Katherine Parr by over fifty years: her treatise of hunting and hawking from the Boke of St Albans - a secular work - is the first print publication by an Englishwoman.
This movie looks so good. So happy they got the period costumes correct, and don't look like they went to the mall for prom gowns. (Cough, Cough, "Reign" Cough, Cough)
Hah yes they were very prom like dresses. I read somewhere the costume department for that show said they used such modern looking gowns because they wanted to portray how fashionable she was at the time. Kind of a cool idea, but honestly the fashion took me out of the story a bit because of how modern it was
It's nice to see Catherine's role in the reformation being portrayed and her relationship with Henry, with her step children, with religion and the power dynamics at Court and between Catholics, Reformists and Protestants. So excited to watch the film
1:56 not to mention Anne of Cleves wasn’t even close to being dead at this point, and actually outlived Katherine Parr.. the voiceover part says all the previous wives met “untimely ends,” but Anne was very much alive & well
I saw the trailer for the first time last night so excited to see a more positive depiction of Catherine Parr. I didn't care for the book but it looks like this movie will give us a good portrayal of young Elizabeth and Catherine's relationship unlike Becoming Elizabeth. Very happy to see the accurate attention to detail in the costumes. Those French hoods are amazing! 😊
When I think of Catherine Parr, the words "vicious" and "exciting" never come to mind. However, this trailer IS exciting & I can't wait to see the movie! This little talk was fun & has me hyped for the movie. Thanks!
I have to say, they really dropped the ball on making Henry physically look as he was, rotting and monstrous. He's way too pretty. I'm excited to see what they do and how they spin her story with all the subtext we imagine. I do hope they fully capture the feel of what the terror of living in this time period, and especially his court, was actually like. I notice they like to explore the 'intrigue' in movies when it was more abject terror as his reign progressed. I'm surprised there haven't been any straight horror movies as of yet, because there is plenty if horror to be explored for so many of the people crushed under his malignance. Henry quickly became a true monster. They need to show him as a monster. One day I hope they will.
@@banditqueenbanditqueen9110Exactly, it’s Hollywood! Even the most vile looking characters are giving really conventional attractive actors, unless it’s fantasy, and even that’s a bit of a stretch. 😂
I think that depends on the viewer, but I don’t find him attractive whatsoever or Jude law very recognizable. I would still like to see a monstrous Henry. But it’s certainly a lot better than many of the previous Henry’s. To me the best is still, Henry VIII and His Six Wives (1972).
As a straight 'disciple' of Dr David Starkey, a Tudor expert...I must express myself as a 'proper little Renaissance man' (his words, not mine!)...Lady Estelle! You really get to the nub of the true history of the whole Reformation in England & France. Your brilliant contributions only add more to the debate which has raged for centuries over Henry VIII's six wives...& from a French perspective too! You have a style all of your own in your 'broadcasts', madame...quite the fine lady of a royal court...full of intriguing insights, hidden meanings & individuality & enthusiasm. If you had been at Greenwich Palace or Hampton Court...at that time...I can only imagine the influence you might have had on the King himself...let alone the male courtiers! Keep up the flag of historical research & vivat regina...Catherine, Anne or Jane...though Estelle might prefer to keep a distance...& keep that wonderful head! (I hope you see my point!)
Salut, Estelle! Anne here in Los Angeles - saw firebrand last night in the cinema and my jaw was ON THE FLOOR !!! I could not believe how perfect the performances were. Jude law maybe gives the best performance of his illustrious career. I actually hasn’t read Fremantle book prior so I was surprised by the ending - and satisfied greatly !! It is a fine example as I say as someone who consults on historical productions of the team knowing the rules so well, that they’re able to break them. :) brilliant film, brilliant performances I want to see it again and again. 👏🏻👏🏻 also, as a lifelong champion for Anne Askew she gets her dues here, the firebrand title easily attributed to her as well as Parr, I think it’s meant for both. Pleasant surprise. Did I say Jude law was OUT OF THIS WORLD?! ❤👏🏻 Another great video from Dr. P, merci!
I’m SO EXCITED to see this film! It genuinely looks amazing. ❤️ I agree with you about the “Divorced Beheaded Died” lines in the first part of the trailer. In the trailers I had seen that part including the voice over was absent.
Thanks for your insight on this trailer, I'm now VERY excited for the movie to come out!! 😁 And you're absolutely right, the costumes are beautiful! ❤️
Yeah the bit about all the wives meeting untimely ends, does it just refer the marriages because it can't be lives. Anne of Cleves living her best life might have something to say about an untimely end.
What an injustice to history this movie was. Young fools that will watch this garbage will actually believe this is what happened as they are so easily brainwashed and cant do research on their own. I thought it was a good movie until the final act which completely raped history. How you can sign on and act in such garbage is beyond me. I would rather do Sharknado 12 then sink to this level. To bad, because the acting was great...specially by Jude Law.
I think, going by everything I've read about Elizabeth 1, I cannot see her being in any way careless, like this, in her speech/discussions, with anyone. It would have been far too dangerous and she was highly intelligent.
I really dislike Catherine Parr. Elizabeth had a falling out with Catherine after the Thomas Seymour affair. I cannot believe she kept Thomas and sent Elizabeth away. People could believe what they wanted, they just didn't have freedom of speech. Speaking against the church was speaking against the government.
KP was the wife of Thomas Seymour and pregnant with his child. She was bound to him. I think she was protecting Elizabeth as well as standing by her husband. She couldn't throw him out in any case. She could keep him from her, but even then the law said the wife was his property. Radical or not, she vowed to obey him. Hence the dilemma and KP was complicit in some of his abuse of Elizabeth.
@@banditqueenbanditqueen9110The complicit in abuse part, was Thomas using both them. He had Catherine Parr hold Elizabeth down while he tickled her. In an attempt to show her it was all just innocent, after confronting him. Which of course it wasn’t. After that, is when Catherine Parr sent Elizabeth away. I do think they were both victims of Thomas. Makes me wonder what happened to Lady Jane Grey, since she was other girl living with Catherine Parr and Thomas, at the same time. I have read in letters how much she adored Elizabeth. She loved her like her own daughter. I do agree that by sending Elizabeth away, she was trying to protect her.
I know there are people that say Jude Law's too attractive for Henry, at this point in his life - but they obviously had to strike a balance, & I think even if he's not the perfect physical match for old Henry's semi-disabled bulk- I think he's doing justice to the portrayal of Henry's mental state & sense of intimidation; I don't know how tall Jude is- but Henry (at 6'2'') was someone who literally & metaphorically towered over everyone in his Court - only his brother-in-law, Brandon was a match/ near-match to him in height. So, when you add the mercurial temper & tyrannical rage on top of that - not just some shouty Cockney (Ray Winstone's Henry), or the mixed bag of Johnathan Rhys-Meyers' Henry- Law's Henry does look like someone to genuinely fear, & his hypocritical attitude over the course of the Reformation in England, is going to be interesting to look at...
I struggle to remember dates and years. I tend to think the most important question you can ask when studying history (any part of it) is "Why? Why did this happen? Why did this person take this action or fail to take another?" WHY is so much more important and interesting than *what year*. Please don't misunderstand; having a sense of the timeline is important, but perhaps remembering the exact year something took place is not as critical as knowing why things happened as they did.
Fantastic Movie I been hoping for a movie on Katharine Howard from the Very beginning her time in the duchess girl school to marriage of fat Henry- but excellent on K Parr
In the US some of this is pretty distant so we probably needed the little rhyme. And we don't do a good job with our own history let alone world history.
I give the trailer 8/10 because the one thing which annoys me is "5 Queens before her all met untimely ends". Not true. As Estelle says that verse is annoying. Also Anna of Kleve, hello, lived until 1557, buried in Westminster Abbey. K of Aragon might have died anyway in her 50s as she had cancer and there was no treatment for it. I don't see Katherine literally hanging out in the woods with radical heretics but it does put her central and is a powerful image. So much to look forward to. Costumes, setting, sets, imagination, the power of Katherine, love it. Can't wait.
i’m very curious about if you follow the belief that Henry’s personality was changed by the head injury he sustained in a joust? i see how it’s a tempting theory. is it potentially the cause in your opinion, or maybe something that people have clung to while trying to explain his behaviour?
Well, I get the impression that this woman has a bit of a chip on her shoulder. She seems a little over sensitive about how women were regarded during Tudor times. When pretty much anyone who wasn't the king would have had to tread carefully. I only know of Catherine Parr from fiction and she is never portrayed as a beige character. She is always shown to be sharp and shrewd, someone who knew how to play the game and managed to outlive the tyrant.
