      Not an option in anything that can carry bombs short of recreating the B-70 Valkyrie. Also high and fast isn't that hard to hit with the right missile because you can't dodge like you would low down.

    There should also be about a dozen ZSU-23-4M4's, 2 at each sam site, to provide the point defense/anti-cruise missile fire. Unless of course you were going really modern in which case it would be 2x 2K22 Tunguska at each site.

    • @KortanaDCS
      @KortanaDCS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      So, I would absolutely do this if I was configuring a proper IADS (and we'll almost certainly see that at some point), but I was sticking to the idea of a "SAM site" in a very literal way. i.e. if it didn't exclusively have missiles, I didn't include it. The BTR's were actually left in by mistake, as I have them built into my templates by default.

    Ideally, the Soviet/Russian doctrine stated that an especially important site should be covered 360 degrees. That means forming a ring of SAMs around it with a bit overlapping kill ranges. Mostly medium range SAMs. The area between (close to overlap) covered with short range SAMs and AAA as well as the very site and long range SAMs. Like a kind of check board. Also, combination of radar and heat seeking SAMs is highly recommended. Stuff like Tunguska and Tor were even designed to hit the bombs and missiles before they reach the target.
    So, not 100% true to the thought, but still pretty good.

    The Sky Net script is designed for this, and you can set up command centers and power stations as well as nodes. All good targets to find and take out to reduce the network, it's also smart, shuts radars down, blinks them, relocates mobile units, defensive parameters etc. You can also setup sectors and blue & red force nets at the same time. Good for a cam[aign maybe. Skynet is available thru DCS forums. it's also compatible with the high number sam mod as well, if you fancy it. You can actually do SEAD and not DEAD and allow a striker to get through. Would need some good teamwork.

    It’s all academic since ED doesn’t model EW warfare. The US/NATO/Israel isn’t attacking an integrated SAM site without dumping radiation everywhere. Those Sams aren’t getting anywhere near their max range or effectiveness in a modern ECM environment

    • @josephmagana6235
      @josephmagana6235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ED does actually do some rudimentary EW modeling, including the ASPJ on the hornet. I didn't see them employ it in the video, but I would imagine IRL it would be pretty effective against these old soviet SAMs. As for a "modern" ECM environment, you are never getting a realistic model of that in a video game because its all highly classified.
      Edit: I did see cap had XMIT lit up on the EW panel so I guess the jammer was emitting. Not sure what effect that had.

    The US and Israel have had very little trouble when going up against Russian SAMs since the Gulf War. There are just so many different ways to attack or avoid SAM or radar systems nowadays. Russia always touts their latest and greatest SAM systems but against air forces like America and Israel they aren't very effective.

    • @josephmagana6235
      @josephmagana6235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Russia has some pretty impressive SAMs nowadays, much more advanced than these soviet ones in DCS, but at the end of the day an IADS is basically a fixed fortification and ultimately at the mercy of the mobile force which can maneuver around it and pick it apart from its weakest point. Even Russia doesn't expect to actually win control of the air with defensive missiles which is why they also devote so much energy to building their own advanced fighters.

    Unless they're on a hill, you can't notch a SAM, Cap. Only a Beam. It's kind of nitpicking but I have to. Remember, a Notch requires you to be below the horizon for the radar that's tracking you. For a SAM, you realize that's kinda... Hard. If you're over the horizon, you're Beaming (at sea level it's masking due to earth curvature). Amazing mission, will definitely give it a try!

    on the Caucuses map I've set up two battalions of S-300 PMU-2 in the same group at Novorossiysk, in lieu of the S-400's they have set up there. That's a central command post, both types of search radar, the tracking radar, and then six additional big bird radars and tracking radars paired with six launch vehicles to go with each set of radars . Then in the same group, I start with another central command post, and do it all over. I have the first battalions worth of launchers set up on the peninsula beside the base, and the other set right beside the shipping port, with all launchers placed in the base in groups of six. I then have a custom made SA-17 site where I've just swapped the SA-11 launchers, and then 100 feet to the left of each launcher, in the same group, I have TOR launchers, and 100 feet to the right of each SA-17 I have a SA-19, with the radar in the centre. Lastly, I have a SA-8 launcher set up at each corner, again, with the radar in the centre. Now THAT, is hard to defeat. I also have the same thing set up where Sevastopal is, as well as another one set up and spread out across the Crimean peninsula, as it is in real life. The Black Sea is de facto Russian airspace when you see how far reaching all of those SAM sites are.
    I believe the High Digit Sam mods are Skynet compatible.

    We haven't had the SA-5 involved yet, but we've been going up against thick SA-10/SA-15/etc combo sites. It's interesting to see a more experienced team do roughly the same thing (albeit more competently/coolly).

    What would have been a better tactic would be to fake launch the SAM site, basically switch the radar into guidance mode, make the RWR go into a launch has occurred and the guy goes defensive.
    You add a bit of fakery to it, you will want to reserve the extreme SAMs for when they have some altitude rather than that close to the minimum altitude, the goal with that is to keep them low, burning gas on approach.
    When they get closer, you start tossing normal SAMs at them to keep them defensive, and then when you get close enough, you light them up with Strela's and AAA, which are deadly when you are expelling your energy dodging.

    the issues shouldn't be air density, i should be earth curvature. they don't have an AWAC up, so they can't see a low flying target. many of these russian super long range missiles will "climb to space" and coast and come down on low flyers.

      @@ryanpayne7707 i know but he talked about the "range" being much shorter because of thick air. But thats not the way these "Theater Area Defense Missiles" work. They fire them in high arcs where they can get into the thin air, then... let them glide/dive on the target. they don't shift to direct fire until the targets under 30 miles and even then...
      As they say, the missiles have trouble hitting things close, and thats because of the high arc, they like to fly.

    You should try to use SLAM ER since it is a weapon that would likely be used in this case for it's long range capability.

    • @KortanaDCS
      @KortanaDCS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely think it would be worthwhile to give this a go, but the SA-10, -11, and -15 can all engage air to ground missiles, so I don't like our chances of getting a SLAM ER through.

      @@KortanaDCS Then you made decoys to keep them busy. Also try the TALD on the F-14

    • @KortanaDCS
      @KortanaDCS 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MR_equis TALDs are reasonable effective against earlier SAM sites, but rapidly become ineffective when up against SAMs which can engage numerous targets simultaneously. This is also assuming that you can get high/close enough to employ the TALDs without being shot down in the process, which isn't a given when up against the more capable systems in the HDS mod (some of which will be perfectly happy to fire at you at or beyond 50nmi out and have a very good Pk at that distance).

    Could you not close view all pieces of equipment on the map, as you have done with the SAM piece, one by one whilst illustrating this? Could you , also, add Breda/Bofors double barreled automatic turrets (do they exist in DCS?). Could you add Russian field CIWS next time? Thanks for posting, this is entertaining as is already!
