    In this video of Living the Jo Life, we visit the old town, Al Balad in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Located next to the Red Sea, Al Balad, a World Heritage Site, used to be the gateway to Makkah for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea. Al Balad is known for its historic buildings, often built of coral stone with colored wooden bay windows and balconies (rawashin) dating back more than 400 years. Some of the historic buildings are open to the public and have their own names, e.g. Bait Nassif, Bait Matbouli, and Bait Baeshen. In Al Balad, you will also find one of the oldest mosques, Al Shafie Mosque, dating back about 1400 years. Once the sun sets, all the street markets come alive. Here you can buy all sorts of material, gold jewelry, perfumes, dates, meat, fruit and vegetables, and much more. There are also a number of nicely decorated cafes serving cakes, juices, ice cream and of course Arabic coffee and dates. We had a fantastic time exploring Al Balad and we can highly recommend a visit to this exotic and vibrant part of Jeddah.

    This tiny branch shaped/twig is from a plant called: Salvadora persica. We call it in Arabic: Meiswak مسواك and it is a favorable habit for the majority of muslims during prayer time, fasting time in the month of Ramadhan during the day which helps keep a fresh breath and an overall alternative teeth cleaner to the conventional toothbrush and paste. The chemical compounds in it produce a heat sensation that ia similar to fresh cinnamon or cloves. Hopefully this answers your query 😁

    Here in India we use Neem Tree tender stem for brushing a teeth. One has to chew it for some time to make it like a tooth brush or very similar to paint brush, and brush a teeth then. In most part of villages it is still used for brushing a teeth. Fresh, natural and environment friendly too 😁. Neem (Azadirachta indica) has insecticidal and medicinal properties.

    The small wooden stick that you guys used to clean your teeth with is a toothbrush and it's called MISS-WAK in Arabic. The history behind this MISS-WAK (or the wooden toothbrush) goes back to the days of Prophet Mohammad who used to use it to clean his teeth with. So people who still use it nowadays (not a lot) is to bring them spiritually to prophet Mohammad (it's kind of doing what the prophet did or used in his daily life). I hope this helps like you requested in your video.

    I so miss Saudi! Im a new subscriber and I will definitely be an avid fan of your vlogs. I am so happy you encouraged people to adopt the strays because I dont think so that there are lots of animal rescuers in KSA. When I was in Makkah, I tried to feed the strays in our neighborhood. Keep uploading more videos! Sending my regards from the Philippines!

    Nice Abayas , good choice .
    The tooth brush called Meswak , ِArak tree roots, and this is how people brush teeth in the past . The rocks on minutes 18 are incense called Jawi , it is extracted from Sumatra Indonesia , they are burned on coal as home fragrances , some people believe that it kicks out devils :)

    Amazing video, Al-Balad, or historic Jeddah, is the only major red sea pre-modern urban existing site, the significance of this site that it's the only remaining piece of the pre-modern red sea culture and architecture, so it's good to see ongoing restoration project taken place

    I love the old buildings and the beautiful geometric designs, the window seats and the cool interiors. I think those buildings would be a lot cooler with the windows open as they are designed to draw the hot air out the top. Sad to see the amount of street cats, maybe hopefully there is a charity / refuge for them, with care and vet services.

    • @livingthejolife
      @livingthejolife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the buildings are so fascinating. It was certainly hot inside! Yes definitely a street car problem. It was very hard to look at. Hopefully something will be done.

    Fascinating to see your reaction to the miswak. Technically this is a tooth hygiene tradition that has been in the Arab world for literally thousands of years! When I think of it as someone who lives in the west I find it amazing that miswak became a religious act, and it is highly encouraged in Islam. I find it striking that brushing the teeth can be a religious act which is something I've never come across in theologies!

    • @livingthejolife
      @livingthejolife  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's so interesting that miswak is a religious act. We had no idea what it was. Definitely surprised by the taste. Thanks for the information!
