And yet "Coming in at No. 1 is the hard-touring Dave Matthews Band, which banked nearly $530 million from the sale of 11.6 million tickets since 2000. His tour stops included the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, most recently in 2009. Not too shabby for being "under-rated"!

You will have a field day getting into DMB if you like the drums on this one. Carter Beauford is one of the best out there right now and one of my favorites of all time. His cymbal work is so fun to listen to. There are probably others more familiar with the totality of DMB's catalog who can suggest good songs but their first two albums ('Under The Table And Dreaming' and 'Crash') are the best place to look in my opinion. The drumming is incredible throughout.

The song right after #41 is called Say Goodbye, and I think it's better than #41, but my favorite will always be "Don't Drink the Water". It's as if Dave tried to write a Peter Gabriel song and succeeded. Alanis Morrisette sings backup on it. The lyrics are incredible and stark and shocking and necessary and poignant. Please do that song! The video features Native Americans dressed as Pilgrams. Phenomenal. Really.

DMB is the rare rock band that is not electric guitar-based. Matthews himself plays acoustic, but the sax and violin sounds fill the space that in other bands would be an electric guitar. Made them unusual on the jam band scene in the 90s. Obviously, the rhythm section is off the charts great.

I was a huge Dave-head back in the 90's. Even though through the years I have transitioned into metal, I always come back to Dave for good memories and when I need a serious chill-pill. I love all their albums before 2001. For some reason, just everything after never did it for me. RIP Leroy, you are missed dearly. I also wish that Boyd didn't fuck himself over. Even amidst all the sexual assault stuff, quitting the band was a stupid move. He used to be my favorite band memeber.

You know a great band when they sound better live than in the studio. DMB certainly fills that mold.

I know you said where did this type of music go, they're still going strong! And if you have the chance, definitely go to a show. It's definitely experience! It was so fun watching you listen to one of the first songs I listened to by them! It was in 1996, but I still loved it! And I love them still now! Highly recommend the new album Come Tomorrow, too. It's become my new favorite. Favorite song, though..."The Dreaming Tree" :-) I'm so glad you enjoyed #41!!

For me, Dave Matthews was like the song on the radio that you would listen to and enjoy, but not the one you really craved. It was a safe party selection because it was generally accepted and something everybody knew. It was omnipresent through television, radio, and people's personal recordings. Hell, it was good stuff you couldn't get away from even if you tried! But I was the bad boy. I was still in a grunge grog stupor when I started mainlining Stevie Ray Vaughn. When I'd get my fix, I'd be, "Dave who? Tell me, is it still flooding down in Texas? Radio? What radio?" That just reminded me of a song. I think it's called "Mexican Radio" and I think the band is called Wall of Voodoo. Does that answer your question?

#41 is an outlier in the DMB arsenal in that it sort of sits on it's own island musically. That said, the "most-like" songs that I can recommend that really showcase this same vibe would be "Crush" and "Dreaming Tree". Dreaming Tree boasts some amazing odd time signatures and beautiful lyrics.

Hi ya JP. Well as one drummer to another I would suggest that you invest in an electronic drum kit. I've been a drummer for 61 years and just invested in one last year. I bought an alesis dm10 mkii studio kit with mesh heads. It is awesome. The mesh heads make it very quiet when using your headphones. The monitor has approximately 65 different drum kits on it and another 170 different drum sounds. You can play everything from conventional acoustic kits to steel drums. The kit is very responsive and is just as sturdy as a conventional acoustic kit. It feels just like any acoustic kit. Check them out. And your neighbors will never know you are playing.

love your facial expression to the flute and Saxophone, both played by the late great Leroi Moore by the way, you should watch a live version just to really watch the beauty of Carter (drums) and Leroi

I highly recommend Bartender from Folsom Field so you can see how the band performs live, Warehouse, Tripping Billies, Lie in our Graves, Seek Up from live at Red Rocks (not to be confused with Weekend on the Rocks), You Might Die Trying from Live at Wrigley and Jimi Thing from Live Trax 2 ( I was at that one). Oh and Too Much- any live version.

If you want more like this, I think Tripping Billies is in a similar vein. However, my favorite song is The Idea Of You, followed by Grey Steet.
I also have to say, I love to see masters of a craft explain what blows them away about something. They pick up on subtle things that a less knowledgeable person wouldn't, and by shining a light on it, you learn a lot about a craft.

Ha. I'm going back through your videos as a new sub and now I see you turned on to DMB. Man, you're getting introduced to so many phenomenal artists and mountains of music to discover...I'm a bit envious actually, like when I recall hearing the absolutely captivating guitar intro to Crash into Me for the first time again. Really enjoying the channel. Cheers.

Damn dude, I look over to the videos on the left while listening to your discussion of just not having been exposed to different types of music, and I see Genesis and Zappa
Shout out to the other viewers here for the great suggestions. Your viewers are at least giving you a Master Class in "must listen" music. If I had to throw in a couple of artists you may not be familiar with but we genre-defining in their own rights:
1 Mahavishnu Orchestra - no words to describe, must listen lol
2 Allman Brothers Band - "Southern Rock" Pioneers (but so so much more)
      Enjoy.

listening to the album Crash, always mellows me out and helps me to think clearly. Oddly enough, my least favorite song is Crash Into Me. It's more so about how people say, "oh this my favorite love song!" or "This is mine and my boyfriends favorite song!" Any real DMB fan will understand why.
