I was turning the dial and came on to Power 99 FM in Philly and this was on. Blew my fucking mind!!! From that point on it was Rakim, Public Enemy, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane etc. I liked Run DMC who came before Rakim and them but as soon as I heard this song it was a done deal. However the fact that Eric B and Rakim didn't cuss at all in this song, and still made a hit, it's cool and all. We also have to take into consideration that to get a record deal as a hip hop artist in the 80s, your slate had to be shining brighter than the stars, but that changed in the 90s, and in today's music you have to cuss up a storm to be considered "A Great Artist", and quite honestly, I'm fucking tired of artists today thinking their better than anyone from the 90s or 80s. Best canadian rapper out there imo (though i think he retired) I saw him live in Chicago and he freestyled for ten minutes straight taking suggestions from the crowd without swearing once. It's so hard to freestyle, let alone not rely on profanity for filler words, it was extremely impressive. Artists like him keep my hope in hip hop alive.

However the fact that Eric B and Rakim didn't cuss at all in this song, and still made a hit, it's cool and all. We also have to take into consideration that to get a record deal as a hip hop artist in the 80s, your slate had to be shining brighter than the stars, but that changed in the 90s, and in today's music you have to cuss up a storm to be considered "A Great Artist", and quite honestly, I'm fucking tired of artists today thinking their better than anyone from the 90s or 80s. Best canadian rapper out there imo (though i think he retired) I saw him live in Chicago and he freestyled for ten minutes straight taking suggestions from the crowd without swearing once. It's so hard to freestyle, let alone not rely on profanity for filler words, it was extremely impressive. Artists like him keep my hope in hip hop alive.
