1:39 at night , i'm working , saturday on earth , watching this on my phone while eating my sandwich is enough to keep the faith in guitar playing , cool stuff, music & attitude .. hope u understood me i'm french and my tailor is not so rich .. thank´s Kid
Mighty" Joe Young is the lead guitarist on "Can I Change My Mind". His guitar licks on that track are very tasty indeed.:) He also played with Howlin' Wolf, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush. A very fine blues guitarist.
Kid, I grew up on this music and gotta say you nailed it. Very difficult little thing to play ain't it? Big fan of a similar lick in Betty Wright's "Clean Up Woman".
The Dogtown Horns play this song with a couple of different bands and we've managed to fit the Tyrone Davis horn arrangement over both the Davis and Roy Buchanan versions. Frankly I've never paid attention to the finer points of how these guitar licks are played. Our guitarists are excellent and sound good doin it, right or wrong. But I did enjoy the investigation here, and these licks definitely distinguish this song from all others. Good job! Reminds me of when us horn players dissect a song, phrase by phrase, lick by lick, and all the harmony stacks. I think most people listening don't hear it, but every once in a while there's a musician in the crowd who'll catch a difference.
Dear Andersen I enjoyed your video very much. I have been trying to copy that guitar lick (Tyrone Davis) for 20 years and I have been playing it wrong. And Cissy Strut by the meters you are absolutely right about the bass part. Working in New Orleans I heard the meters many times (George Porter)Most people miss that bass part. But you sir played it correctly. Thank you very much I shall be listening.
Awesome! That's definitely right... thanks! It's kind of funny listening to the Roy Buchanan version. Roy's version sounds nice but I think even the great Roy gave up on learning how to play it correctly. Plus an interesting side note on the Roy Buchanan version is what's up with the chord change on the B section? He does the chords backwards...
Hey Kid, Nice job on the solo. I tried to fugure this out in 68 with the 45 from Dakar (Brunswick) label on 33 1/3 and tune down the guitar no protools then. Hmm 45 years ago, yeah I'm a blue hair. I heard lots a guys play their guess over the years. I was close but you are closer. Best I''ve heard. Enjoy your spin on stuff and totally agree...
hint for the rookies as stuck as I was trying to watch his fingers: you're gonna be playing everything one fret lower if you're in standard tuning. Just listen really close and you'll get it eventually.
I just started listening to "Night Train" and "Terry Hanck And Band Live" yesterday. Hearing you on the Live album do "Can I Change My Mind" got me going on this song again. I first got hooked on it off the "Livestock" album by Roy Buchanan in 1975. So here I am, learning the song off TH-cam. I found another good version on the link I posted below. Also, I checked his lesson on "Slip Away" and that's way cool AND what is really cool is his right hand on that one. See you at The Torch Club!
Great playing! To add to the confusion, If you listen to the first verse, after the line “as I packed my bags to leave”, it sounds like he is playing single, descending, pull-off notes that are not contained within a double-stop or triad.
That's not an ignorant question at all, since there's only one like it in existence :) It started out life as a Fender Jaguar style project, but it was really kind of a clunky guitar until the great guitar builder Bill Chapin (of Portland, OR) got his hands on it for me. He made a new neck for it and overall just turned it into a great axe. A third pickup was added as well. Chapin guitars can make you one, and he's never made a bad guitar. Best guitar maker I've ever seen. Very original too.
THIS GUYS GOT THE POSITION AND THE FINGERING AND IT SURE SOUNDS LIKE THE GREAT PHIL UPCHURCH TO ME MANG THIS WAS OUT IN 1969, I LEARNED IT IN 1970 BACK WHEN I WAS 20 DOING THE REMAINING CHITLIN GIGS TO BE HAD HERE IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES I ALWAYS ENJOY KIDS KNOWLEDGE AND HIS TRUE SPIRIT WITH HIS MUSIC PEOPLE GOT TO KNOW WHAT'S RIGHT CARLOS GUITARLOS 90042
Back in 2010 I got the chance to meet a very nice gentleman by the name of Mickey Rogers in Jackson, MS, who claimed to play that guitar part on the original recording by Tyrone Davis. He had the song in his own repertoair. It sounded just right when he played it. However, I’ve never been able to confirm that it’s him playing the guitar part. There’s no personell listed on my Dakar album.
You're right, he never plays it the same way twice. To me it sounds like each run is just a little different. I don't play guitar but I can tell it's a fricken awesome lick.
I enjoyed this video and you are right this is one of the most difficult guitar riffs to tackle. PLEASE tell me what brand guitar that is its beautiful.
You are the FIRST person I have ever seen/heard actually play the guitar riffs on that song right!!! My request is that you show us more slowly exactly how you are playing that. I really can't follow it on this video and I really would like to learn how to play it like you do. Thank you!!
I have always wanted to do this song. I am glad I heard your take on the song. When you slowed it down, I heard what you heard. You have a good ear and good taste in music. Tyrone has one more remake in there!
What I heard about the guitar on this (IIRC there were 3 guitars on it) was that Carl Woodford played the main figure and Mighty Joe Young played one of the other parts. Another common error on this is people playing a ii/iii minor release and it should be a ii/V!
Very difficult to get the things right just by listening, I did and probably still do play wrong the great riff of Steve Cropper on "Soul Man" until I could finally see a snippets on one video it's quite tricky I guess you have an excellent ear surely worth it !
(giggles) I too LOVE the Guitar playing on that song, but there is on other instrument that people may not pay much attention to on that recording, and that's the TAMBOURINE PLAYER.... THAT PERSON WAS REALLY KEEPIN GREAT TIMING... XXXCELLENT...JUST XXXCELLENT... CHECK IT OUT!! Yep...Its a "SIMPLE" instrument but the "TIMING" WAS IMMACULATE...... LISTEN TO IT! BYE! CHLOE CHANEL --OUT!
See! You do what I do - adding notes. Cuz I add way more than you, it makes me better than you. In..every...way. OK. For reals, I really appreciate your playing. I get much joy and inspiration. And I learned the lick. Love this song.. Cheers
You are correct however even Roy Buchanon played it straight, without all the hammer-ons so play it any way you see fit! The ppl dancing aren't gonna care one "ioda"! Not a hybrid key they tuned down one-half step so C becomes B while playing C form chords.
by the way, one of the commenters on a youtube listing of this song has the lineup listed. he's got the guitarist as john bishop. hot shit. and rather forgotten: the dude doesn't even have a wikipedia entry.
terry hanck!??!! he's my fav local musician! btw, I play it totally different, my version is much simpler because I'm the one who typically sing it too, really difficult to play that lick and sing at the same time! But, I've done it for years. Also, ur correct it is in B. Roy Buchanan plays it in C. I play it in A, ha ha! so I can sing it!!
Man I have listening to that tune for years and wondered if anyone else was amazed at the guitar and bass work. The bass was so in the pocket. The guitar was just ability to play effortlessly. Thanks for breaking it down.

Probably the best R&B lick ever. You have done an A+++rendition.

That's good bro ! This is what I was hearing, but so called TH-cam guitar teachers never attempted to play it this way.. Thanks!
Nice bit.I've been tryin' Roy Buchannon's.I actually met him backstage in Boulder CO.Great insight on the jam!!!

Very nice, instructional video. One of my favorite tunes. Kudos. 👍👍 ®️

fantastic.nice breakdown .i was wondering about the guitar riffs on the song.

Brilliant! A real true example of the essences of Soul!

Use the speed function on the youtube settings to slow it down
@@jgk381 Ok, I'll give it a try. Thank you!
I came here for a Buchanan version; but this is still Great!
Thanks for the lesson. One of the best on TH-cam for this tune.
Dude, I really enjoyed this vid, and I'm not a guitarist. I like your delivery and of course the awesome guitar playing.
This is great. The original had Mighty Joe Young on rhythm guitar.
Thanks Kid--was learning this song for a gig with Glenn Walters tomorrow night.
I have always wanted to do this song. I am glad I heard your take on the song. When you slowed it down, I heard what you heard. You have a good ear and good taste in music. Tyrone has one more remake in there!
You picked one DOPE tune man. Sounds like you nailed it.

Terry Hanck....use to see him in San Mateo CA. Blues on B street
It was MIGHTY JOE YOUNG WHO PLAYED THE LEAD! He was a Chicago bluesman!
Ah ha, I thought so.
Thanks, been trying to figure out Sean Costello's version and this is a great start.
Awesome on both parts!! You rock!
The Kid you play that song like you wrote it, you have the best video lesson on Can I change My Mind. I Thank-You
Love your vids bro.
great lesson. pissed me off for a while, but that's bc i knew the damned puzzle was worth it. best rhythm part i've seen/played in a while.
Very difficult to get the things right just by listening, I did and probably still do play wrong the great riff of Steve Cropper on "Soul Man" until I could finally see a snippets on one video it's quite tricky I guess you have an excellent ear surely worth it !
Sean Costello play it differently but his version still kicks ass :)
Smokers have rights too. Once again great job.
Great video bro. Thanks for you breaking it down.

That's how I learned how to play harmonica like Little Walter half speed lol.
Thanks!
I've been playing it wrong for longer than I'd care to admit.
I'll fix that now!
Cool playing, I wonder who played on the record?
Extreme concentration!
It's Mighty Joe Young on guitar.
Great job

yet another part that's almost always played incorrectly is the bass line!
BUT- the Kid got it right!
Very Nice 👍
Be great if you could slow down the demo and break it up into distinct phrases. I couldn't keep up or keep track.
Really enjoyed this, thanks.
See! You do what I do - adding notes. Cuz I add way more than you, it makes me better than you. In..every...way.
OK. For reals, I really appreciate your playing. I get much joy and inspiration. And I learned the lick. Love this song..
Cheers
The guitar player is probably LV Johnson I'm not quite sure
Mighty Joe Young

Fantastic!
great, i appreciated the tutorial, but could you slow down the riff part of the song? i'm trying to see the pattern what you're doing. again , great !
terry hanck!??!! he's my fav local musician! btw, I play it totally different, my version is much simpler because I'm the one who typically sing it too, really difficult to play that lick and sing at the same time! That riff is pure west Africa man.
must be a pretty good cigarette
this vid makes me want to smoke cigarettes
What are you smoking? That's completely wrong! (Just kidding.) But what ARE you smoking? BTW, how does Roy Buchanan play it?
Tune back up with another blunt.......
Could it’ve been Wayne Bennett?
Dude, if you're gonna teach this song, you need to slow down and call out the fingering and zoom in closer on the fretboard
Free country bro
Hey my friend I like your style. If your ever in Chicago contact me, and I'l bring around some players. dannyjahlfeld at gmail
OOO SHIT YOUR WHITE AND YOU LIKE TYRONE DAVIS THAT IS COOL

I am white and I love black music...three revelations in one posting.
Man I have listening to that tune for years and wondered if anyone else was amazed at the guitar and bass work. The bass was so in the pocket. The guitar was just ability to play effortlessly. Thanks for breaking it down.
Is it possible for you to do a video of this song and break it down for a lesson. Your rendition of it seams to be spot on and is great
