I'm from Cincinnati, and introduced to Wild Turkey around 1971 or 72 after a recording session at Queen City Album company's studios. It became my immediate favorite, not for drinking, picking, grinning, and raising hell, but to relax with family or close friends after a long hard day, especially in the middle of winter. Thanks for jogging my memory.
Thanks for this one! I just received 4 bottles of Wild Turkey 101 that my grandfather had been sitting on for over 40 years. We opened one on the day we finished cleaning up the house and selling it. The cork broke in the exact same way. Everyone was shocked by how good it was.
Love seeing father and son like this, that's life goals for me! Consider this, though, guys - from the cork breaking we know that the seal was degraded and I would guess that consequently, the fill level dropped from its original mark. What I'm not sure of is what the loss consists of - ethanol and/or water - but I'm 99.9% sure they wouldn't be lost in volumes proportionate to the starting alcohol percentage. So what I'm taking a round-about way of saying is that you can no longer trust the 80-proof statement on that old bottle, if you wanted to know its proof you'd have to measure it yourself. Refractometers are cheap and easy to use and it might just add a bit of interesting info to this series!
1991 was the year i went into the alcohol industry. Really enjoyed this. Kurt, i know you take this seriously and that's good, but try not to stress out. Enjoy the ride and have fun with it. We're here because we enjoy the content. Cheers!!
Really appreciate the confirmation! I know we all may have different opinions and that’s great. I just want to make sure I am relaying honest educated opinions. I am human so there will be times I can be wrong with certain information and that’s ok to. Constructive criticism is always good and accepted.
I have an episode suggestion. I would love to see you guys do a video on this! What makes a good bourbon to YOU in JUST 2 categories? In other words, if you could only choose 2 of the following , which 2 would you choose? I think it would give newbies and also those of us who have been enjoying bourbon for some time some perspective from experienced folks like yourselves. Knowing what two categories are MOST important to you if you could have no other could help others see what makes the most difference in the taste. Barrel Proof Non Chill filtered High Age (8 or 9+ years old) Bottled in Bond Makeup of Mashbill (high rye, wheater, etc) Finishing ( toasted, double oaked, rum barrel , wine finish, stout, etc) Thanks and by the way, I love the family affair you guys have going on. It’s goals!
Enjoyed it! The brown label was 7 years at one time (carried an age statement and was 86.8 proof). When Pernod removed the age statement and dropped the proof, it essentially became 4-year whiskey. However, 1991 was glut era so there could be older whiskey in it.
Wild Turkey used to taste more like Russel's Reserve 6. The only thing I use Wild Turkey for now is mixed drinks. If I want to drink their bourbon straight I drink Russel's Reserve 10 or Rare Breed which both taste and mouth feel are awesome.
Heritage verse modern distillate is an awesome comparison. IF Trenton is sourcing from bottle auction websites (ie. U.A.), they have had some recent issue with authenticity of some "lots" they sold of older bottlings. Cheers to idea, and great twist on the content. Keep it up.
Thanks for a really fun show Trenton! I have never seen a Japanese WT import. However, I used to drink Wild Turkey 81 back in high school (MUCH older than the one you have from 1991). I quickly moved on to the 101. As usual, blinds are so much fun. I am almost always fooled in a blind taste test. Now that I think about it, I haven’t had WT 81 in decades! Based on your review, I won’t be trying it again anytime soon. The 101 is just awesome.
Loved the video. I found it really interesting that at the beginning, Kurt guessed the proof on the current Wild Turkey 81 to be 100 proof. I have always found Wild Turkey products to be “hotter” and more ethanol forward than other bourbons of similar proof.
Great stuff, this could be a recurring episode, alternating between the blind taster, various brands and eras, etc. Not sure I’d have been too upset about a second backup Blue Spot though! It may have surpassed RB12 Cask as my favorite Irish.
Very interesting comparison. The tide seems to be turning towards non-chill filtered globally, but some brands are reserving that for their higher-up selections (which I assume is ironic in that not chill filtering whiskies means LESS work).
Wow. Just wow. Dusty bottles trounce today’s versions. This was a really good matchup. This is why I mainly hunt for older or discontinued bottles instead of buying craft whiskey.
Thanksgiving came early to the SLB basement bar. Lots and lots of Turkey!! Pretty cool watching Trenton do the intro. Didn't know if I'd ever see that day! Great premise and amazing finds for the video. Enjoy your Turkey dinner
Just going back 10 or 12 years, regular Elijah Craig used to say 12 years on the bottle. I suspect every brand has lost age (and flavor) since then. Let alone 30 years ago. What a great find, and a great idea for the episode. Can't wait to see this series!
@@stephenpartain5488 I did a blind tasting of the old 12 year vs the NAS. The 12 was easy to tell apart and was superior. The new one is ok, but has some youthful funk creeping in that the old bottle didn't have.
I'm tired of all the shuffling. $35 bothles now have $25 juice, $50 bottles now have $35 juice. Brown foreman sells early times Bib, but now makes coopers craft. So is coopers craft basically ET BIB at $35? I would rather they just stop shuffling juice and just raise the price. I'm tired of chasing bourbon.
back in the 80's I drank lots of WT 101 and loved it, quit drinking much bourbon for many years for many different reasons. But recently started again first choice was WT 101 was very disappointed not what I remembered not sure where to go now.
I loved this one! I look forward to more "mystery" tastings! I encourage you guys to continue on this path. I love this concept! Way to go Trenton, good idea to screw with Dad! Thank you!
I slept on wild turkey straight bourbons soooooooo long it’s ridiculous. American honey messed me up at 21yo, so it was tough to revisit later in life!!!
That was pretty awesome. I always like seeing these kinds of tastings between old release and new release. It was doubly awesome that Kurt didn't know what they were at all. Would love to know how hard it was to find that vintage turkey bottle. I can't imagine what it took to get it. Looking forward to the next one of these.
This was so much fun! Love watching you guys. Fantastic idea Trenton … nice to be entertained with something different and unique and very interesting. Can’t imagine what the next one will be! Cheers! 🥃✨
Dang, even guessed it was WT. Very impressive given all the options you have in the bar. I can guess most of the ones I have blinded but I only have 20 or so.
What fun. I think 101 has slipped a little in the past few years but is still my goto. RR10 and RB has also seemed to fluctuate. Maybe it's just me. Wish I had the older bottles as a reference. Enjoyed the show.
Wild Turkey used to list the ages of the whiskeys in the Rare Breed blend on their website but they no longer do. So I suspect they're using some younger whiskeys than they used to.
@@xiamengbaby in the last 2 years Rare Breed defenatly had some flavor drift 2yo bottle vs. 1month bottle. Oxidation could explain it to a degree but not completely. Still love it.
Good video fellas. Love the theme and results. What begs my mind is: what changed? Besides non-chill filtered, why was the old juice better in this case? Looking forward to more like this.
My thought process is due to the recent bourbon craze distillers have changed or rushed their product to fulfill orders. Used to be a lot of age stated bourbon back in the day. WT 101 used to be an 8 yr stated bourbon. Now they are blending batches etc to try and attain the desired flavors. My theory anyway.
@@slbdrinks That's a good theory. Due to lower demand back then, it must have been way easier to let the Bourbon age longer. We're still fortunate to have so many good selections, but I wonder if the glory days of Bourbon were back then or now...... .
So besides the age of the bottles and the proof difference, theoretically the only difference between these bottles is that the vintage bottle is non-chill filtered? It would be really interesting to compare two bourbons that are bottled around the same time at the same proof where one is non-chill filtered and the other one is chill filtered. It would be difficult to do that from an availability standpoint. Maybe if you can get your hands on an exported Rare Breed that is non-chill filtered.
I don't see why one can't like sweet bourbon and a good smokey scotch but that's just me. If you enjoy a good BBQ, you should probably enjoy smokey scotch. Some people are not sweets types of people and they'll tell me that they don't like bourbon because it's too sweet. That, I get.
Hard to beat WT101. Rare Breed is the only thing that comes close imho. I know it isn’t exactly apples to apples for proof, but the taste is wonderful!

Why not do a battle of readily available Bourbons that you can pick up locally for under $50 so a really nice bourbon that won't break the bank.
And as a bonus to that list one bourbon that's under $100 that is much better than the ones that were under 50
