I just finished the first seven chapters of One Piece, and they were great fun! I’m looking forward to our discussion of them on Thursday. I’m not sure how much philosophy I’ll bring, but I’ll be there!
Your content got me to read again after a terrible injury. It’s not inappropriate to say your channel helped renew my zest for life. I hope when my book comes out in the next two years, you will give it a look through.
Watching ATLA with my son as a kid is one of my fondest memories, he’s in his 20s now and lives in a different part of the country but when they released the live action trailer he text me, super excited about it!
So glad you’ve been ATLA. It’s one of those shows that has staying power. I consider it a masterpiece. Books two and three it does some really good stuff character wise. I don’t want to get into spoilers but there’s an arc that I’d put up against some of the best stuff in fiction.
I can see it. I thought so much in the first season paid off well. So if everyone is correct that Book 1 is the weakest part this is going to be an all-timer for me.
Just had our kitchen done right before Christmas, and you’re right - not having the sink is the worst part. Only so much you can do with the bathroom sink. Never thought I’d get sick of eating out. Three months later and I still don’t want to hear about carry out food.
Season 2 of ATLA is probably my favorite season of any TV show I've ever seen. It also has a fantastic villain. As a book comparison, I think you could say S2 is to ATLA what Golden Son is to Red Rising.
I remember watching new avatar come out every Saturday growing up. One of the best memories from my late teens. The finale is so amazing, can’t wait to hear what you think of the series overall
Finished the final Dark Tower book. What a crazy ride, I struggle to even tell people what the series is about when they ask! Overall I quite like the ending, it’s cleverly done. I also got back on Shogun, I’m up to chapter 36 and it continues to impress me as someone who knows the real history and fair bit but having no prior knowledge of the book’s plot
Growing up with ATLA really spoiled me and set a crazy high bar in terms of fantasy worldbuilding, story telling, and characters. I always love seeing new people discover and appreciate it nearly 20 years later
Avatar is so good. I loved it as a kid. Have gone back to watch it a couple times too and have enjoyed it every time. I just finished The Trials of Empire this week and I really enjoyed it. I found myself really liking the beginning more than most have. It also just makes me hope Richard Swan will continue to write in this world. Also finished Before They’re Hanged and that was incredible. I love Logen Ninefingers.
Aw I loved hearing about your Valentine's Day tradition with your wife, that is so fun and cute! I honestly hope you treat yourself to a War for the Rose Throne binge read, that series is just a masterpiece and so deliciously bingeable! Also happy to hear that ATLA has been such a pleasant surprise for you, you're making me want to give it a second chance now (mind, I only watched half an episode and wasn't in the right mood so there's that). Happy reading and watching, and good luck with the rest of the house renovations!
Avatar the last airbender is my all time favorite show. I remember finding all three books on DVD in my mid 20s at a garage sale and the homeowner throwing shade and telling me that I was too old for that show. Their loss!
This week took steps to make sure I have good chance at finishing a second book to keep me on my 2024 goal of two books a month. Rain continues off and on and unpaved playground keeps kids on inside recess. Physical books seem to draw students like flies so started a reread in e-book form to increase my chances of finishing another book for February. Read: 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R. Tolkien Reading: 'Shogun' by James Clavell (first read, still slowly getting through Book 1), 'Dresden Files: Dead Beat' by Jim Butcher (first read), 'Needful Things' by Stephen King (reread, saw that the blu-ray disc of the 4K copy I picked up has the extended version of the movie so decided to reread before watching) Watched: Madame Web, Bob Marley: One Love, Thanksgiving Listened: was a week I picked ten releases had sitting around for awhile: City of Caterpillar, was the only one I found decent Played: on a break from non-phone gaming which has been mostly Mahjong
Man im excited for your one piece disscussion, And then I heard youre bringing Ryan Cahill, And Chris Rucchio! That awesome, I just read their series back to back pretty much.
i wanted to take a second to thank you! because of you i’ve read a lot of stephen king and dune 💓 before i found your channel these books made me nervous as i wasn’t a horror or fantasy reader AT ALL. now they’re the #1 genre i reach for. so again thank you for your reviews and everything you do for us viewers 💓💓
I'm like a 75-100 page a day reader normally, sometimes less with 2 young kids, and I've gotten through 3,000 pages of Ryan Cahill since Feb 1. Absolutely obsessed, wrapping Of War and Ruin tonight, then starting the Ice, then starting the wait!
I wouldn't even be mad if you turned into an Avatar channel. It's that great of a story. Listening to you praise season 1 like this was so satisfying. I'm dying to hear more updates on how it's going.
@mikesbookreviews Oh hell yeah, you're getting to the really good suff now, right there in the core of the series. Every episode is iconic and just banger after banger.
I won't be able to make it to the livestreams unfortunately. I will be leaving for Key West early Wednesday morning. I did finish Stone of Farewell and I loved it. Golden Son will be wrapping up by Tuesday, so I will be taking To Green Angel Tower and Berserk with me on vacation.
I think The Apartment is one of the best romance films ever made. Certainly the best written romance film. Great balance of cynicism and tenderness. Also Jack Lemmon was great everything.
Just finished book 1 of Mike Shackle's The Last War trilogy. It was so grim, violent, and bloody! I loved it and thanks for recommending it. I would have missed it completely otherwise.
Yup, i never watched ATLA as it was airing when i was a teen because i was like nah this is for kids lol i watched it when i was around 25 on recommendation from my brother and i was blown away by it
I am mentioning no names or what part of the series it is, but AtLA had my absolute favorite villain arc of any book or show. Just top tier. I'm excited for you to get to that part of the show!!
This weekend I'm watching the tv series warrior it's based on writing's from the late bruce Lee Fargo season 1 volume 1so far im liking it don't know if I should watch season 2 because I heard some things
My reading week has been kinda crappy this week, read next to nothing for the last few days and I attribute that to feeling heaps tired lately, but also I picked up Helldivers 2 which is an amazing timesink of a game when it is running well. Hoping to get back on track with the reading, but not looking likely to finish out what I had planned for this month tho
I'd recommend priest of lies ! I burned through the whole series, and while it isn't perfect, I had a lot of fun with it and was satisfied with the ending..
I am loving Shauna Lawless’s Gael Song series right now and so excited for her new novella prequel, Dreams of Fire!!! I think it is being released next week!!
Just a quick recommendation: QUINT by Robert Lautner. A prequel to the movie version of the legendary JAWS character. Hemingway meets easter-egg hunt - but better realized than in Solo - A Star Wars Story.
Trials of empire felt very erratic for the first half or so, but I really enjoyed the last 100 pages and the horror elements were amazing! Book 1 is by far the best imo.
I finally got caught up on your content over the last few months! I like those older films too! My husband recently surprised me with a copy of Bullitt, staring Steve McQueen & Jacqueline Bisset. 🚘 🚔 Atm, I'm currently reading Ryan Cahill's~ Of Darkness and Light, and also P. L. Stuart's~ A Drowned Kingdom, and I have an audio copy of The Pillars of the Earth on hold from my library, only 17 days to wait. Follet will be a nice genre switch before I jump into Of War and Ruin. I recently finished my journey of Gwynne's Banished Lands world. The Faithful and The Fallen and Of Blood and Bone have consumed me over the last few months. I'm not picking up Bloodsworn until we are closer to The Fury of the Gods release day because I know I will need all 3 books... 📖🥰📚
Made it a little further in the shining and pick back up my buddy read of black rose with my wife and about 110 pages In to clash of kings and allmost down with no one can know
I only read Dune all the way through for the first time this year (stopped after the first part the first time around) and honestly, even I'll be pissed if they don't do the "I'm sorry, Grandfather" bit right. Not sure if Dune Messiah (if they end up making it) will really work without getting that character in this film? Seems like a bizarre choice to me.
"My name is Mike and I got my business degree and now I'm a TH-camr" (I know, I know, but that makes for a funnier speech :D ). It's your channel. I say if you loved book 1 and the series isn't all chonkers, finish it while you're enjoying it :) Also, Philip, I don't think you can talk about One Piece while wearing a blazer ;)
Again I'd encourage you to read Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey. Also, one of my favorite vampire stories is The Keep by F. Paul Wilson. Please don't judge that book by its crap movie.
Im currently reading The urgent life by Bozoma saint John memoir Shogun by james clavell While we were dating by jasmine guillory One for my enemy by olivie Blake soon I will start on tales of the body thief by Anne rice

Oh it's very satisfying to hear you saying "i don't binge animated shows like that" last week and you now going ah nevermind. and yes, I'd agree that season 1 is the worst. You're in for a good time
NOT trying to be a person of drama!! Just something I have noticed is all. letting you know I am unsubscribing to your Channel and many other booktubers that seemed to run in the same Circle as booktuber friends. 😢 as it is, it does appear that the same authors, and or books are being promoted among the same booktubers. Being in a position of influence. One does not do it for free. So who's piggyback riding on who the booktuber or the author? As far as compensation is concerned are booktubers compensated by free books/ money from authors or publishers? What about favorable reviews for said books? I believe that all booktubers should State whether they've been compensated( paid promotion) in any way shape or form about a book, review, or pushing an Arthur or his or her books as in an interview. I think this is a way of being fair with the consumer or any other booksellers, subscribers, or patrons. Just my thoughts are. ( I do know that TH-camrs who review musical instruments or musical products have to post or state that it is a paid promotion video.
I just finished the first seven chapters of One Piece, and they were great fun! I’m looking forward to our discussion of them on Thursday. I’m not sure how much philosophy I’ll bring, but I’ll be there!

I really hope you will end up loving One Piece too professor Philip Chase ! :D

Wow, that is the highest of praise. So glad I was able to help!

Yep, he speaks the truth. 💯
I didn't watch ATLA until I was 28 and it became one of my all time favorites. Glad you're loving it!
Totally agree about Trials of Empire
I think it's going to challenge Batman the Animated Series as my favorite animated show ever.
I remember watching new avatar come out every Saturday growing up. One of the best memories from my late teens. The finale is so amazing, can’t wait to hear what you think of the series overall

I can totally see that.
I lived in Texas my daughter was born there and I finally learned Spanish fluently in the time I was there!
I'd be surprised if he walks away from Sova for good.

Im glad you enjoy Avatar. And we are always late to something, so being late is not even a thing.
A wizard is never late Frodo Baggins
Good luck stopping for a month after book 2 of Priest of Bones. Each one takes it up a notch and I had to read all 4 straight through!
That's what I have heard. Seems like a real binge candidate.
Finishing Red Country and I’m really impressed, I never thought I’d be thrown into a Western/ Organ Trail story but I’m loving it

About 75ish% through Eragon. Might start the next book in the series next, or maybe Bloody Rose since I read Kinds of the Wyld last month.
I'm halfway through Trials of Empire. You're not alone in the whole should have been more than a trilogy
Atla is the greatest show of all time
I'm really loving it.
Ironic Mike mentioned Mad Men in this episode, lol.

Mike's reviews of some of the reviews on youtube. His knowledge on books is an amount.

You should try The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennet that just came out this month. It’s a fantasy/mystery with unique world building. I think you’d really like it! Great characters, too.
I'll look it up!
I second this recommendation. It also has a Sherlock Holmes/Watson vibe.
I’ve just finished Trials of Empire, I enjoyed it but it did become a more ‘typical’ fantasy trilogy. The Lovecraftian parts are awesome though.
Maybe we’ll get some prequels based around the crime investigation more like the first book?
I really like the hellspawn he's created.
Finished Caliban’s War, 5 stars for sure. Are you going to do a review of the entire series btw?
Haven't really thought about it. I guess I could.
Maybe you should do Why You Should Read The Faithful and the Fallen. You did Why ‘I’ Decided to read, maybe now you could do Why ‘You’ Should read. Also, now that you’ve finished both Realm of the Elderlings, and The Expanse.
It's a possibility!
Have you watched Blue eye Samurai Mike ? It's pretty good :D
