I walked in the Amazon rain forest. We had to wear Wellington boots because the Amazon is a Huge wetland area, and look at the abundance and variety it produces. When I flew out, from the window I could see no dry land, only trees and water.
I highly recommend that you also introduce Gambusia Affinis, AKA Mosquito Fish to the Beaver Pond. They will extremely limit the number of mosquitos preventing the spread of diseases like Equine Encephalitis.
Gambusia affinis is an invasive alien species in the UK and is seen as one of 100 worst invasive species. Although the do eat a lot of mosquitoes, we do have plenty of native species, such as bats, swallows and swifts, that also eat enormous amounts of mosquitoes. Repairing the ecosystems is thus a better option in disease control than potentially harming it by introducing invasives. I like your thinking though
I love Knepp, been there several times. The last thing I heared about the beavers was a couple of years ago that they had escaped and been found dead further down the river. Was this correct and are these two replacements? Such a great thing, it's obvious just from this short time how they make the landscape so much more complicated and create many different habitats.
Does the Beaver count as one of the 16 large mammals that went extinct in Britain due to humans since we started farming and Domestication? When did we do away with the last Beavers? They are such a brilliant creature the way their generosity of spirit creates habitat for so many different species they don't mind sharing with. Their return will change the hydrology, in semi desert areas keeping water trickling year round where without beavers river beds usually ran dry after flash floods.. Of course its anthropomorphism to suggest their really generous... Only we can be considered a species capable of being generous... Even though we're now causing this 6th extinction. Personally I think it unreasonable to conclude all other life isn't just as self aware as us. If not more so, haven't we been dulling down our senses since we started the Domestication era? We are a mess of contradictions.. We are run by unelected elites or governments who won't dare offer us referendums to end poverty, starvation,, inequality wars, pollution, ban causing the extinction of other species... If everyone was given the vote for example to end all wars everywhere forever we'd be sure to defeat the weapons industry in a landslide victory with less than 1%, those who profit from war voting to keep wars going.. These are the current lobbyists.. A tiny fraction with hugely disproportionate power.. This obviously flawed system is very new to humanity... It's terribly ironic since hominids as a branch of the primates are or were in societal terms uniquely fiercely egalitarian and took cooperation to new heights doing away with an alpha male boss any central leadership or ruling elite.. It worked for the hominids with equity and increased cooperation we were more flexible than other primates and indeed other mammals who suffer from the drawbacks of the alpha male leader and their brain powers.. Perhaps more specialised more restricted to one habitat less adaptable to new ecosystems, and humans had the benefit of lots of brains equally valued.. Knowledge and food shared, not hoarded.,when climate changes came, our ancestors went on the move and learnt about new species to live off cooperative learning with individuals teaching all they learn as they learn passing understanding on, everyone, everyday a teacher everyone a pupil Like that new habitats quickly became new food resources, medicines, a source of useful tool making materials.. I think today we only value an often destructive specialisation or expertise Our modern civilisation depends on the excellence of a very few with their private knowledge., leading our society to the brink of disaster, without any group mind oversight the boffins, geeks, nerds and great minds come up with WMDs burning fossils and releasing enough stored carbon to cook the world, what else?
