      So true! Amen to that! I can't tell you how many times my sister and I are mortal enemies one minute and the next minute we're best friends. Sometimes, we have to lash out on each other for a good 5 to 10 minutes and then we're good. My mom goes away to get away. And then she comes out 10 minutes later and she's like "I thought you two were arguing." And then we'll be like, "We were, but we're all right now." Sister bonds are the funniest relationships. XD

    I feel like this explains way more than for the first time in forever does.
    In for the first time in forever, Anna never actually explains to Elsa how much it hurt her to be locked out. She just 'forgives' Elsa before she even explained why she locked her out / ran away. Here they each actually express their hurt and regret, it feels a lot more human.
    Not to mention Elsa is a lot more strong and sure of herself here, showing the change in her that she acquired in Let it Go.

    • @ladylullabystar1090

      I agree with you 100 percent, it was more realistic, Anna who just wanted to be with her sister, but tells her its all in the past. But soon after she showed the gloves it would in fact enrage Elsa. (I would too if that happened)
      I just don't seem to understand why they added "First time in forever reprise" if this scene is ten times better.
      Oh well.

      if you guys listen again, there were talking about a prophecy, because this song was made way before the story got changed, so yeah i could agree that this song might be better than the reprise, but the story wouldn't make sense. Because in this song they are probably talking of what happened in the old story.

      Zachary Khan My point is, in For the First Time in Forever Reprise. Elsa and Anna were lightly arguing, as Anna tried to comfort her. (Sure it wasn’t as realistic, but also they hadn’t really been so close. So arguing really wouldn’t have been really a sibling relationship as much as actual dislike.) But Elsa grew from the fear of what she had done and ended up accidentally freezing Anna’s heart. In this one, Elsa and Anna are coldly arguing with one another, as siblings would normally do. However, as I said earlier they weren’t really too close to have grown a sibling-hate bond. Therefore Elsa ends up trying to block Anna with ice. Which results in her anger taking over and freezing her heart. Which in my opinion, is a way to set Elsa as an even bigger antagonist (NOT a villain) then she already is in the first movie.

      I think both undermines the non existent relationship they both have...story wise I think a better way would’ve been “life’s too short” only because it shows the potential relationship that Elsa and Anna could have as sisters but slowly falls because they don’t know each other well enough at all that’s why Anna offers the gloves because she doesn’t know what that means for Elsa and how Elsa points out how selfish Anna is when she herself is actively being selfish
      This song fits better than the reprise because it’s light hearted and then takes a darker tone for not only the story but shows a more realistic approach towards sisters
      Think about it, they don’t know each other therefore their misinterpretation rules their feelings for one another and because of that while singing what they have in common they start to sing their flaws too
      They really did it dirty by cutting it out it would’ve been better if they didn’t do the reprise and did this instead
      It just makes sense

      Maru _ anna lived her life completely shut out from everyone she’s ever been closed to. she longs for love more than anything. it’s why she decides to blindly marry hans. anna doesn’t know anything about love and that’s where all of her decisions and motivations come from. she yearns for it so badly, enough to go after the elsa, her sister that she barely knows but she wants that love from another person so badly.

    Disney choosing the reprise seems almost comical. "Life's too short" was way more better than the reprise
    In this you can see Elsa has actually changed, rather than in the reprise where she gets scared again so easily.
    And they actually fight like real sisters.

    • @DarkRain110187
      @DarkRain110187 9 ปีที่แล้ว +298

      I couldn't disagree more. I'm a writer, and I think the reprise fits the movie storyline perfectly. This was tumultuous because the original storyline was tumultuous. Anna says it herself that they've had a falling out, which never happens in the movie. In the early draft, she was seen as a useless princess, because she didn't have any powers like her sister, which she completely knew about, but in the movie, they were both locked in the castle and hardly spoke to each other, which is why they had to change the focus of the fight into Anna's engagement, while in this version of the story, Anna is already married to Hans.

    • @NightclawXD
      @NightclawXD 9 ปีที่แล้ว +116

      Before this song I've defended the reprise countless times. And sure this song is focused on a different fight. But I think you're defending the reprise for the different reason that I have. (I'm speaking from both sides, because i love both songs) Elsa's personality is caring and afraid. When she 'let it go' she thought she wasn't going to have to fear hurting people, that by running away she was keeping others safe. So when Anna tells her that she froze over Arandelle, she realizes she can't escape her powers, and she always ends up hurting people. A lot of people dislike this movie and Elsa because she has no 'character development'. Elsa's personality can't change suddenly through a song, because she's been this way for so many years. I like this version of the song because Elsa and Anna are arguing like real sisters and it shows no matter what, sisters are sisters and they argue. And I wrote this comment before I remembered that Elsa's character is completely different than this portrayed. I think for the sequel, I would like to see more sisterly actions between the two, even though there were some cute scenes. And I'm also a writer, so... ^.^

    • @DarkRain110187
      @DarkRain110187 9 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Well, are you even taking into account the storylines? This song follows completely from the original storyline, the one that still had the prophecy. I also know psychology, so I completely understand the emotional abuse her parents put her through (in the movie). Frozen is not as innocent as it looks at all. It's rather fucked up... Elsa grew up that way, fearful, because that's how she was brought up by her parents. They drilled it into her. She was not raised that way in the original storyline. Sisterhood is completely irrelevant to the interaction in the reprise... and is totally relevant and central in this song, so your point makes no sense to me whatsoever.
      I can see your point if you're just going by the songs, but you're a writer. You shouldn't be defending something out of context. Writing also includes a solid understanding of psychology, which both versions of the movie really have. I don't think you're taking into account just how terrible her parents were in the movie version. Elsa is nowhere near as outspoken and confrontational as she is in the original. There's plenty of character in Elsa that people just don't understand, and the technical term for Elsa's behavior in the reprise is regression.

    • @NightclawXD
      @NightclawXD 9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I realize my point doesn't make sense, because I've argued from both sides. I understand the fact that Elsa regresses and she's been 'drilled' by her parents to be afraid, but don't you think she cared about her sister too? She became afraid from the prophecy and from seeing her sister get hurt. She does care whether or not she hurts people, because her parents taught her to fear her powers.
      And I've just begun to take psychology, so I have yet to grasp the full understanding. But what I do know is that in the reprise, she's afraid of hurting more people, as she realizes she can't run from her responsibilities and powers.

    the more deleted scenes i watch, the more i wish they'd actually gone for the "elsa's a villain" route. i do like how elsa turned out in the movie, but at the same time i feel like this more cynical version of her who, instead of being intimidated by her own powers is much more angry and a tad selfish, would have made a lot more room for growth and conflict. anna is also a much more interesting character, whose quirky awkwardness is an actual character flaw she needs to sort out. their dynamics depicted here are so much more complex and endearing. better than singing trolls at least.

    Good: Elsa is stronger and more assertive, excellent song, revealing about their strained relationship/complicated feelings for each other
    Bad: Elsa is more selfish and less endearing because she shows more concern for her freedom than her Kingdom or repairing her relationship with Anna

And elsa is a strong person unlike "for the first time in forever". When anna told her that their kingdome is in snow, elsa became scared again and its cancelled her character develop in "let it go" when elsa bacame strong person.

      Well she was having issues from the moment her sister showed up and expect that now that she knew about the powers that they could be friends again. She has been feeling guilty for a long time for what she accidentally did to her sister. She would've kept her parents out too if she could have. And her parents might have meant well but they were going in the wrong direction from day one. And because her sister didn't remember everything she never understood why her sister shut her out and assumed it was the powers.

    • @danycam1
      @danycam1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +137

      +Emma Albertine Henningsen Don't forget, originally, this was supposed to be a fairly faithful retelling of the Snow Queen. If you read the Hans Christian Anderson (HCA for short), you will get a totally different story. That's why in the earlier versions of the story, Elsa is evil.
      I read somewhere that when the song Let it Go was written for the film, the writers decided that there was no way a heartless villain could sing such a song. So, they scrapped the entire idea of the evil snow queen and went with the "misunderstood" person who can't control their power.
      IMO, this story worked so well because it's Superman's story. He has to hide his powers as a kid, as does Elsa. The only difference is that he gains mastery of them and his parents don't die at an early age. The older Elsa got, the worse her control got. Ironically, the trolls kinda screwed her. I'm shocked that the king never went back there to get help on how she can control them. In any event, she spent the next decade of her life alone in that room. Fear consumed her more and more each day.
      I also wanted to mention that's why they decided to go with 2 snow queens in "Once Upon a Time" series. The aunt was the snow queen of the prophecy.
      I doubt they will ever delve into the prophecy unless they introduce the aunt in the movies. I think dropping that entire storyline and making her misunderstood was brilliant. I'm sure more movies will follow where the antagonist isn't evil.

      If they went for the villain ending for Elsa yeah, but i see why they cut it. This Elsa is a lot less lovable because instead of being horrified at Arendelle being frozen in this version she shrugs it off. Not her problem and when its suggested she try to contain her power to unfreeze the fjord she immediately backs on everything she'd said.
      After this song, even if Elsa felt bad for hurting Anna it'd still be very weird for Elsa to become Queen at the end like it does in the movie

    • @aaronwolf2483
      @aaronwolf2483 10 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Quite true. I think they made the right decision with the Reprise, but Life's Too Short is part of a cool alternate "what if" version of Frozen's story, before it took the form we know and love. I especially like the OST version. Also, it's pretty cool that even thought the lyrics get darker, the melody continues to seem relatively cheery.

    • @WanderingRagabond
      @WanderingRagabond 10 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Aaron Wolf It's also more in-character for Elsa to still be so desperate to keep Anna away from her, since her main fear above all else was to hurt her with her powers. Under that logic, this song here really couldn't happen. Especially at the end when Elsa is liberally using her powers to stop Anna's advance. It's a risk she simply would not take. It makes more sense that she ended up creating Marshmallow to take her away instead, since it was safer than bringing her power to bear on Anna directly.

      Was Elsa striking Anna as a child even part of the story at this point in development? I thought this version was about Elsa having to hide her powers growing up and becoming bitter and somehow eventually blaming Anna for how her life turned out. That's why she gets so angry when Ana offers her the gloves.
      I actually like this story better because this song makes it clear that it is stupid to hold grudges against people your are supposed to love because they may not be alive tomorrow, and that's really true.

      I feel exactly the same way. I don't want that part of the actual Frozen changed because I love the reprise and the drama and everything, but at the same time I would have liked to see the sisters' relationship from another perspective as well. I just feel that somehow in this early draft of the storyline - and you have to include Anna's More Than Just The Spare and the reprise of this number - was much more deep in the characters, especially Anna, who had a real lesson to learn.
      But at the same time, there are other things this version of the story was missing, things I love about the final product.
      I don't know, now I just wish they could give us a whole new Frozen with these outtakes and the old plot. Like we have 2 Frozen's and we don't have to choose. That would be the best thing ever.

    People keep forgetting that insecurities and anxieties aren't just "oh I can deal with them right now and I won't be bothered by them ever again" it's falling back into them over and over again when something or someone reminds you of them, you don't feel like you're in control anymore. Elsa was ok with being left alone in the ice castle, she felt like she could be free and alright because she knew that no one would be around for her to accidentally hurt with her powers, but when Anna shows up Elsa remembers her almost dying because of what happened when they were children, and all of the confidence and control she had comes crashing down, so she's scared of hurting Anna again because she knows what her powers can do to another person. But it would have been nice have them arguing and talking about their feelings

      It was actually recorded afterwards from what I've heard. The director has been quoted in saying that she had trouble releasing a song because some of the lyrics didn't fit the Elsa we know now. Also, the lyrics in this song were changed to make Elsa less self-centered. The soundtrack doesn't have this change or Idina and Kristin singing which leads me to think that they recorded this recently since they would have released this as the soundtrack if they had already recorded. Wow, I just made a huge run on sentence.

    Many people are wondering why this was cut from the movie and replaced with For the First Time in Forever (Reprise), and I want to answer it. In my opinion, the replacement was a purely positive thing and, while I can understand liking this song more than what we got, this completely deserved to be replaced.
    The simplest answer is that this song mentions the prophecy of a cruel leader with a Frozen heart dooming Arendelle that the original drafts of Frozen had, so it would be impossible for it to fit in. And while this is not wrong, it also does not tell the whole story.
    A major theme in Elsa's character arc is her deathly fear of herself and, more specifically, her "sorcery". Life's Too Short shows her continuously indulging in her powers even after learning of her Eternal winter while the final cut shows her once again desperately fearing herself just as she did since she was merely eight years old.
    Another major theme in Elsa is her avoidant personality, even if more likely caused by nurture rather than nature. Elsa wants to shut everyone out for fear of what her powers could do to them, this fear caused by when she hit Anna in the head. Life's Too Short shows her initially wanting for Anna to stay with her while the final cut shows her pushing Anna away from fear of hurting her. "Why don't you stay? There's room for family in my court". That line would NOT do her any favors in the final cut of Frozen.
    Just because this shows Elsa's character too differently to work doesn't mean she's the only one that wouldn't be the same. Anna has always been shown to be anxiously attached and even outright co-dependent at times. For her entire life, she has wanted nothing more than to be loved by Elsa. Life's Too Short shows her graveling with Elsa too much, while Anna's goal has almost always been to get affection from her sister at what seems to be any cost.
    One thing I see many people praise is the way that Life's Too Short portrays sibling relations in a more realistic light than in the final movie, and this is true. Siblings do go from love to hate in rather short time spans. The problem is that the relation between Anna and Elsa is conceptually anything but realistic. Elsa has powers she had to hide form Anna to keep her safe, which is not a thing that breeds realistic conflict. The way the less than realistic nature of their relation is handled makes it more believable, and realism is typically far outweighed by believability even if the 2 are unfortunately used interchangeably.
    In short, while I respect it if you like this song more than For the First Time in Forever (Reprise), there are several major reasons it was cut from the movie. The prophecy isn't a thing anymore, both Anna and Elsa's character was changed, and blind devotion to realism isn't good.

For me, her lack of personality is what touched me. She's finding herself, while being afraid of herself...

      It kills me to say this, but you’re right. I love this song so much more than the reprise of First Time in Forever, and I especially love the reprise of Life’s too short later on (definitely watch it if you haven’t already), yet the characters fundamentally changed as the story developed, so the song had to be cut.
      I would love to see this re-written to fit the new characters (and exclude the prophecy line) with the same melody. Also, the version of this on the Frozen Deluxe Edition Album is better in my opinion music-wise.

    I really love this song but I can see why they chose the reprise of For the First Time in Forever- in the final version, Elsa is 'free' because she can finally be far away from everyone else and doesn't have to worry about hurting anyone. When Anna finds her, she tries to send her home because she's still so terrified of hurting the one person she loves and has left, so she doesn't acquire true freedom until the end, when she learns to control her magic, and only then do we get to see her real personality (albei breifly :/). In Life's Too Short she shuts Anna out again because she's just being kind of a jerk, and really doesn't seem to care much about Arrendelle, which just doesn't see to fit with her character much, and I can't really see her being so eager to push Anna away all over again just because she pissed her off. I like the Elsa that genuinely loves her sister and her kingdom to the point of shutting herself away from both just to protect them much more.

      Remember when they said something about a prophecy? Well, Anna said it but still. Disney had a different idea to make Elsa an evil queen as so said in the 'prophesy' that an evil queen will rise and take over. Elsa even had a different design and was not meant to be related to Anna in the first place but in this song I guess they changed her design and a bit of the storyboard.

    • @kurisucosmo7954
      @kurisucosmo7954 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Running away from a kingdom you were just crowned queen for doesn't scream "cares about Arendelle" to me. She ran away sure out of fear of hurting others, but also out of fear of what others would do to her. After all, she really only started running away after that stupid duke called her a monster, and the people looked at her in fear. So in this version, at least she is not denying her fear and the fact that she ran away from responsibility. She is directly saying why she doesn't want to go back. She doesn't want to be put back in a cage. In the movie, it seems more like that is what she truly fears, but is denying it by saying she's afraid of hurting others. After all, SHE HAS ALREADY HURT OTHERS by freezing the kingdom, and she knows it! She knows it and still does not want to help the kingdom. If her main motivation was fear of hurting people around her, why would she not return to help the kingdom? She had already hurt them! There's not many more ways she could have hurt them at that point after freezing everything. And if she was so afraid of hurting Anna/other citizens, all they had to do was evacuate for a bit so she could attempt to unfreeze it.
      Plain and simple, regardless of which version of the movie we're talking about here, it makes more sense that Elsa's main fear was what other people would do to her/put her in a cage if she returned. It's just that the movie version couldn't commit to that because she might seem too "villain like." In reality, all the movie accomplished for Elsa was making her a passive character instead of one that could actually grow. None of her fears/traumas were addressed or resolved because Elsa NEVER made an actual choice beyond running away. She's not the one who made the sacrifice to break the curse, Anna was.

If you listen to "Life's too Short Reprise" (another outtake) Elsa actually realizes her mistake and regrets after she gets locked up by Hans. This gives her more personality and emotion. Plus we see her realization that she loves Anna and she made a mistake pushing her away rather than realizing it when Anna sacrifices herself.

      Yeah same, it doesn't make sense for Elsa's character- her whole arc relates to her fear of hurting people, especially Anna. Which is why she loses it in the reprise when she finds out she caused an eternal winter. I also don't think she'd ever blame Anna for what she has been through, again her arc is her thinking she's the problem, the "monster". This song goes against all of that since she seems completely fine with ignoring the people of the kingdoms well being and blames Anna.

    (long text ahead)
    Okay, so, here is the deal why I, as much as I love this song and how catchy and iconic it is, believe that the reprise of the First Time in Forever fits way more the storyline/psychology of the characters as they were in the final film. Long story short, they would have to make major changes in the storyline to fit this song. (and also why people are being unfair by saying that Elsa "lost her character development from let it go")
    *1-* Elsa and Anna were separated since the accident, with virtually no contact with each other. That obviously affected them very deeply, but more than that, because they didn't have contact, they didn't have as much fights as "normal siblings", not much conflicts nor conflict resolutions. That said, their relationship will be different than siblings who were inevitably in contact and in conflict with each other (which is usually the relationship in real life, since normally you don't just isolate your children from each other)
    *2.* It is clear since the beginning of the movie that Elsa does have a more reserved nature. She is very obedient and endearing. At the same time, because of Granpabbie's vision + her father/parents' reaction, she also grew very very scared of her own powers. In the original film, Elsa starts wearing the gloves because *she* became afraid, so they gave her the gloves to cope. If Elsa felt she was in a cave and would freak out because of the gloves like in this song, she would show that personality as a child growing up as well. For example, the gloves would be something her parents forced on her and it would actually be a scene were she *refuses* or *acts up* to wear gloves.
    *3.* Do you really believe that Anna would remember to bring the gloves with her? In the midst of all that chaos? Anna is a much more impulsive, spontaneous character, so I don't think she would just show up with the gloves. IF they wanted to include that in a way that fits her, it would be something like "I know you can unfreeze everything! Oh, do you think you will need your gloves? Uh, I didn't bring them with me, but I'm sure we can figure it out down there, right!?" Which also doesn't make much sense to me, because the gloves are just a mental placebo kinda thing that helps Elsa keep her powers under control, not something that would help undo something she did.
    *4.* Okay, let's talk about each one's trauma now. Clearly, Elsa's trauma is that she hurt her sister with her powers and grew up believing that "she is dangerous", and she being isolated just reinforced that notion in her. She is so afraid that in the original film we have this scene where Elsa asks her parents to stay away because she doesn't want to hurt them. Because of Granpabbie's vision, she also believes that something bad will happen if people knew about her powers. So when people finds out at the party about that, she freaks out and instinctively flees.
    However, when she is finally isolated again on a snow mountain, she realizes she cannot hurt anybody there, so she can use her powers freely. A very important notice is that: she sings "let it go" but she didn't really deal in any way with her trauma. The only thing that happened is that she is in a situation now where there is nothing to trigger it (the notion that you cannot hurt anybody if you are alone). There was no actual character development here; there is no inner growth in any way, but just a favorable situation.
    So when Anna shows up and approches, Elsa already shows uneasiness, because now there is a possibility of hurting somebody and she obviously still believes she cannot control her powers. She finally loses it when Anna tells her about Arendelle and that is exactly because it is directly triggering her trauma - which is not something that simply disappear overnight. She is so immersed in it that, even when Anna tries to calm her down, she just cannot listen, and that is what trauma does with us sometimes. So the reprise perfectly catches all this trauma in "Stay away and you'd be safe from me".
    *5.* Now, Anna's trauma is being shut out, left alone, especially after they lost their parents. She craves human connection and is very lonely. Her quirky personality, being so talkative and friendly (even when she first meets Kristoff at the shop; she just jumps in the conversation) are traits she shows since she is a child and were reinforced by her being separated and shut out by Elsa. Earlier in the original film, Anna is all awkward around her sister because she simply doesn't know what to do. With the years, she simply gave up in trying to make Elsa open up the door and, being left in the dark, she didn't even know if she did something wrong or if it was something else. Only when Elsa starts a conversation with her that Anna feels comfortable and eager to talk more with her sister.
    That said, Anna is basically afraid of being alone, being abandoned, and as hurt as she might have been all these years with Elsa shutting her out, she is even more afraid to lose Elsa. So she wants to do everything she can to keep her near (more obvious in Frozen 2) - that said, it is very unlikely that she would just pour out how hurt she has been and start a fight, risking their already broken relationship. This trait is somewhat clear in a scene where Anna is on her horse, looking for Elsa. She starts with an apology, she takes accountability that she was the one who pushed Elsa. Only after that Anna points out that nothing of that would have happened if Elsa had told her about her powers. In other words, it is more important to Anna to repair their relationship to where they were so close than to make Elsa take accountability for all those years.
    I don't think Anna forgives Elsa just like that just because they are sisters. I think it is more because she is just so desperate to not lose her, to be with her at all costs, that she is willing to sacrifice herself and her hurt if that meant they would be close again. Then, when their relationship is repaired and strong again, she would casually confess to Elsa how much that had hurt her. Maybe something like:
    Anna - You know, all those years, when you shut me out without even knowing why... That... That hurt me. I mean, I understand it now that you did that to protect me from your powers, but couldn't you just... have told me?
    Elsa - * sighs, with a sad face * I... I don't know, Anna. I just thought you... you would be safe... away from me.
    Anna - But, but we were so close! I'm sure there could have been a way, maybe something I could do to help, I don't know, just---!
    Elsa - ... I'm sorry, Anna. Father also thought that was the best for us... To keep my magic a secret, even from you...
    Anna - Why would Father think that...?
    Elsa - I... I don't know...
    Anna - ... Well, I guess, at least we are together now! I just wanted to let you know, you know... The important thing is, no more shutting each other out. Right?
    Elsa - * smiles * No more shutting each other out.
    In other words, for this song "Life is too short" fit the storyline and psychology of the characters, they would have to make Anna and Elsa actually have contact and interactions since they are little, like normal siblings. They would have to completely change Elsa's isolation since childhood to something else, since that shaped a lot of their psychology.

    2:50 Somehow this scene really hits me xD Even if the song is more entertaining, I get a really depressing feeling. "You don't know what I've been through because of you"
    I think this also shows their love for each other. For years Anna didn't know why her sister excluded her like this and blamed herself for it. Elsa has been blaming herself for years for putting her sister in such danger and has been afraid of hurting her or others ever since and has distanced herself from her sister. Both were very lonely all these years and had to fight with the death of their parents, where they did not even have the consoling feeling that a sibling can give. . .
    I think it's a real pity that it was cut out but I also think movie scene is also damn good. But I would have been happy if this scene or rather the fight somehow made it into the movie.

    2:47 Elsa genuinely looks upset and like she wants Anna to understand that this is who she is, she loves Anna and regrets shutting her out but she wants to be free to be herself at the same time. That expression for me just shows all the pain she’s bottled up for so long and the conflict she must be having inside
    Have a sister and hide forever or be herself and be alone for her whole life.
    She wants Anna to let her have both. She wants Anna to understand that she can control it now, and that she loves her but also deserves freedom like everyone else.
    The lyrics at that moment fit well with this too, but it doesn’t do nearly as much for me as the pained expression.
    Really wish they chose this instead of the reprise
