    Nice job, it looks really good there. That turned out much better than I was thinking it would. I am going with the window install in my Dodge van because I want it up higher so the cold air distributes better as it drops toward the floor and, I have a bunch of stuff back there (garage) which will block the air flow if I did it the way you did. Your van looks great. Safe travels.

      Thanks for watching. Yeah it was a scary install. But it has been working great ever since. I use my MaxAir fan to move the air around and it seems to work good. Good luck on your install!

    hi I live in Tennessee I've had mine in the floor for two weeks nearly now and it's been good but not great moving mine to the front passenger seat as I hardly use it lol I made a window screen so I can have the window open some and I just rerouted the exhaust heat and hang a thick curtain or blanket around the front seat and door. I keep a fan in between the seats so it should be colder now.

  • @steveedward7572

    That's different. It works and you still have windows to see out.

  • @BryanBear5050

    Hot air rises so an AC at floor level will keep the air at floor level cool. You would have been better off installing it in the window because it is higher up where the hot air is.

    • @IanSkelley
      @IanSkelley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The unit will blow air upward. Also my exhaust fan also blows air down so it hasn’t been a problem.

      A roof fan is similar to a whole house fan so an outtake would be ideal but cooling-wise it's okay because it is such a small, insulated space.

    No read AC manual should be at very slight angle to drain this will cause condensation and interior sweating

    • @IanSkelley
      @IanSkelley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wanita, you are correct in stating the ac should be at a slight angle. The manual also states "Droplets of water hitting condenser
      during normal operation may cause “pinging or swishing” sounds." Fortunately I have not had any water issues with the AC.

    Planning my van build AC...with an extended length van...build an insulated back wall to seal and separate the living area from the "garage". Maybe make the garage wall 15-18" from the back door. Put a window AC unit in the wall sitting on a shelf on the garage side. Ventilate the garage to remove the heat generated by the AC unit by installing a Fantastic fan in the garage roof, plus a vent hole in the floor or side wall of the garage. The air flow between the vent hole and the fan should be adequate for the AC unit to work properly. The AC unit would be fully contained in the garage, so no need to cut large holes in the van, but you still need a vent hole and fan hole. The garage would be a good place to store extra water, tools, hiking gear, a small generator and gas can, your battery bank...anything you don't want in your living space.

    • @IanSkelley
      @IanSkelley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David, interesting idea. Just make sure you provide for any water dripping from the AC into your garage.

    • @David-rx2to
      @David-rx2to 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard that modern window AC units somehow don't drip...they must have an internal drip pan and I'm guessing the moving air through the unit creates a situation to evaporate any moisture. (?) If it becomes a problem, the AC unit could sit in a tray on the garage shelf, or if the AC unit has a tube where condensation drips from...a length of plastic tubing could be fitted either from the unit or the tray it sits in and directed into an empty container (1 gallon milk jug?) fastened in the garage somewhere...then the container could be emptied as needed.

    • @IanSkelley
      @IanSkelley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good plan.....yeah, as humid as it is here in Florida my AC has not dripped any water at all...amazing. It is so quiet on the outside as well.

    • @David-rx2to
      @David-rx2to 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to hear about the lack of condensation dripping. Speaking of quiet...has it been quiet enough inside for you to sleep? I'm afraid the compressor in the AC unit will transmit vibration and possibly some noise into the van. There are anti-vibration mats you can buy...I've thought about having one under the AC unit on the shelf if it becomes a problem. Another thought would be to mount the AC unit on a spring loaded platform that would absorb vibration and cushion any trauma to the unit from the bumps and crashes of on the road travel. I've contacted manufacturers of some AC units and discussed mounting their products in a van. Since the units are designed for a non-moving residential window, any damage to the unit that results from being bounced around in a moving vehicle, would invalidate the warranty. Apparently, the weak link in these units are any joints in the internal tubing that carries the freon.

    • @IanSkelley
      @IanSkelley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      David, I tried to mitigate any extra interior noise. I packed the door with extruded foam. However, there is no getting around the fan noise inside the van. When I had the AC on Eco mode (the ac fan and compressor turns off an on when needed) it did wake me up. I turned it to always on and was able to sleep comfortably through the night.

  • @davidgordy1
    @davidgordy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would go back and remove the molding and a/c and paint the cut bare metal edges of the door. Also, mounted so low you will need a fan to circulate the cold air on the floor to the higher levels. Best of Luck!

  • @chrisreed26

    My plan when I build my van is to install a window unit directly in the wall but not sticking out at all..I will do like they do on many of the new, smaller travel trailers such as the T@B and Coachmen smaller models..They mount up in an upper cabinet and the outside just has a metal grill..the water from condensation either is flung back into the condenser by the fan blades or it can go out a small drain hose...It is an ideal way to have a stealth A/C unit! Another option for a van stealth A/C unit is to install an RV A/C unit on the roof but put a Thule or Sear's X-Cargo type cargo box around the AC unit..then have vents to let the heated air vent out! Lastly, a have seen a very smart young guy hide his generator on the rear door like this but with a spare tire cover over it!! The spare tire cover hides the generator..Now I would say this could even be done for the A/C unit too! Just my 2 cents..well maybe a few dollars worth! haha

    The door install looks so much nicer than through the window up top, but I’d worry about someone bumping into the ac with their car since the ac hangs out past the bumper. Maybe a hi lift jack would fill that space. The window install avoids that problem since it’s high enough to clear most hoods, but looks pretty ghetto.

    Great job! I'm not quite sure why more people don't use residential window AC units in camper vans. They are so much quieter and easier to replace than the roof AC units. Do we really need a 13,000 BTU unit for a class B RV? There is a travel trailer called "Lil Snoozy" where they actually build the mold of the fiberglass camper around a residential window AC. Brilliant!

    • @ladyartistejte4076
      @ladyartistejte4076 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nitram Midnite I think it’s because Roof A/C is more logical to install , since cold air is heavy cold air’s direction goes down if the A/C is placed already down I guess its more likely that your feet will enjoy most of the cold than your body.

    • @midnite22767
      @midnite22767 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. I've heard it might also be due to the fact that you want to avoid road dust and debris from clogging the AC cooling vents. Less dust encountered the higher its mounted. Plus who actually thinks any AC unit looks attractive on any camper or RV, out of sight, out of mind.

    Cool job, you're talented tinkerer. I find it interesting tho that such serious changes to the car are allowed in the US. Here in Germany there is a governmental authority that checks all vehicles every two years. Every owner has to prove whether it’s safe to drive. Cutting such a big hole into the rear door and installing an ac unit… oof, they would just laugh at you and take your registration, since it’s a big change to the physics of the car.

      Portable air conditioners are vastly inefficient. I’ve had one. Most of them work by blowing the hot air out of the room. When this happens, air has to be sucked into the room from somewhere and that air is from outside.

      @@gearjammer4779 Now IM offended! Just kidding when I do a build like this I go out of my way to make it look as ghetto/hillbilly as possible! I actually have a car that I am making a point to do as many "ghetto rigged" repairs as I can. So far: Screwdriver and hockey puck motor mounts. You have to pull a string for the turn signals. all 4 tires are solid fix a flat over 2-inch ebay spacers. I cut a jagged hole in the fender to make the water pump and crank bolts easier to access and patched it with a coke can. Chicken wire grill. No reverse lights... Passenger has to touch two bare wires together to turn them on,. If you want to turn the fuel on you have to hit the defroster button. You can also start it while its in gear. And it runs on propane BBQ tanks and that entire setup is a rig in itself. Boost piping is made from hot tub heater hoses. Hood scoop is an upside down paint roller pan. Interior is lined with about 100,000 stickers. Metal springs sticking out of the seat but re-upholstered in duct tape. Steering while is covered with hockey tape. Skull spray painted on the hood. Side piped exhaust. Window tint is peeling/bubbling. You have to adjust the idle speed if you want headlights or the fan on. Dont be ashamed of rigging stuff up. I intend on winning an award at a JDM meet one day for the trashiest but fastest car. I just got a clapped out van so trying for something similar here. When my girlfriends AC broke in her Hyundai I joked I would put a window unit in the side window and put a generator on the roof rack and then her dog could chill in there while she was working.
