Here we go again! Cover songs, original songs, talking about when one musician makes a tune and then another musician enhances its legacy in one way or another. It might be a change in genre, slightly altered lyrics, etc. Covers are fun and fascinating! Here are some less obvious examples of when a cover becomes more popular or higher quality than the original, or it introduces it to a new generation/audience.

    More examples:
    - "The Tide Is High", originally by The Paragons, then covered to big success by Blondie (and later by Atomic Kitten, but the less is said about that version, the better).
    - "Alone", originally by i-Ten, but massively improved by Heart (the "Till now" part they added to the pre-chorus makes all the difference).
    - "In The Army Now", originally by Bolland & Bolland, but considerably more famous in the Status Quo version.
    - "Don't Turn Around", a song that has been covered so many times, hardly anyone would even know that it was originally recorded by Tina Turner if they didn't look it up on Wikipedia. The more well-known covers are by Aswad, Bonnie Tyler and its original writer Albert Hammond, but the version with the highest chart success was by Swedish 1990s group Ace of Base.
    - "Always On My Mind" was first recorded by Brenda Lee, though Gwen McCrae's version was released first. Elvis Presley's version is the one most people would incorrectly identify as the "original", with two very successful covers (by Willie Nelson and the Pet Shop Boys, respectively) charting in the 1980s.
    - Though this might not qualify, "Take My Breath Away" was first recorded as a demo by The Motels, with Berlin being the band that released the official version for the Top Gun soundtrack (which was definitely the better choice).
    - "Barbara Ann" was first recorded by The Regents, but the Beach Boys version easily eclipses the original.
    - Arguably, Pat Benatar's version of "Wuthering Heights" is more famous in the United States than Kate Bush's original version. (With all respect to Pat, but Kate's version is something else entirely.)
    - "Killing Me Softly" was originally written and recorded by Lori Lieberman, but became more famous when covered by Roberta Flack and again when covered by The Fugees.

I want part three! Do "Crimson and Clover." Joan Jett takes that dreamy psychedelic vibe song and infuses it with lust, making it a whole 'nother thing. The first vocal sound in each version tells you what the song is going to be. Tommy James sings "Ahhh" quite softly and follows it with etherial guitar sounds. Joan Jett sings "Ahh" with longing and follows it up with loud rock guitar strumming. This song is my favorite example of how the same song can work in two completely different ways. One version makes you want to get high. The other makes you want Joan to sing that about you, lol.

Kind of funny that Ronson said Amy never listened to anything after 1967 when her hit "Rehab" is basically a musical love letter to Donny Hathaway who didn't start singing until 1969 (he'd been behind the boards with Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records for a couple of years before then but his first vocal session didn't come until 1969). I mean, the lyric is "There's nothing you can teach me/That I can't learn from Mr Hathaway" (and her cover of "A Song for You" from the posthumous "Lioness" album even ends with a bit of commentary from Amy about Hathaway's singing style--that "he just couldn't contain himself").

This then makes me always think of samples which I think are even harder to recognize than a cover. I know you already made a video about samples in rap songs, but I would love to see how other famous songs or artist use samples in one of your future videos.

I don't know if this cover outdoes the original pop masterpiece, but the Donna Summer version of McArthur Park has always been one of my favorites. The Richard Harrison version which I just re-listened to the other day is so incredible you would think it impossible to top, but Donna took it to a whole new level in the disco era when cover songs were everywhere. It's really hard to deny that sometimes, a song comes before its time. Or there is the right key that makes one ho-hum. It could languish for years or months before someone else comes along. Relays the vocals to a different key, maybe their voice just rings better. Something happens and the song that seemed destined to be effectively forgotten, suddenly slaps harder than the five fingers to the face.

Maybe this video was recorded before it all happened, but it's practically criminal not to talk about Proud Mary by CCR and the cover by Tina Turner. A cover so good that I first thought CCR covered it. A cover so good that it IS Tina's song. I, of course, love the CCR version, but the brilliance and talent of Tina's vocals on the song vastly overshadow CCR's. Even John Fogerty, the writer of Proud Mary, loves Tina's version, and calls it an honor to have had it covered by her.
Another that I love is Please Mr. Postman by the Beatles, originally by the Marvelettes. The Beatles doing covers could be a whole video of itself, but I love Please Mr. Postman specifically because I think both the Marvelettes' version and the Beatles' version are equally good. Gladys Horton has such a great raspy voice with so much emotion, and John Lennon keeps the same vain in his own voice, amplifying his natural English twang. Both sound so desperate to get that letter, and both are brilliant.
