Thanks for sharing your lovely memories. I hope that my musical legacy to my kids will be the same. Good music doesn't have to have a genre and I have always enjoyed how 90s music paid homage to past greats. I have to say though that I cannot hear this original without hearing 'Summer, summer, summertime, Time to sit back and unwind'! Will Smith might have thought 'The smell from a grill could spark up nostalgia' but a few notes of a good tune can do the same.

I first heard this song when I moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1991. The local FM radio stations were playing it. I remember spending the night at my new girlfriend's apartment. Her name was Cherie. She was in the bathroom, the lights were turned down low, and I was waiting for her to come to bed as this song was playing softly on the radio. It was a good moment, and it was a good song for that moment.

I'm soon to be 70 and this was the lick..life was good.. At 20 I was living life. That's what time it was no drugs... definitely no drugs for this Oakland native...
This was the cutting edge, where soul met synth, where funk was the introduction to digital new era using synthesizers and keyboards and expanding soulful expressions over all dimentions, physical and digital. This is some of the most connected music ever made, soul connected. Thank the universe for this song, it's made my life better for hearing it. Put me in that lay back and fire up a fatty, and close my eyes...
Gage, when I first heard this song I guessed it was recorded in 1981. Utterly shocked beyond belief to find this to be a 1974 recording. I always thought I could tell the early/mid 70s sound from the early 80s sound. I'm stumped. My whole belief system has been challenged.
@audiosamples Yeah, but how do you explain that this is even a cleaner recording than Van McCoys the Hustle? When I hear the Hustle, or I dunno, More More More, it totally has a stained '70s sound. I feel this recording is very transparent. Why weren't theirs? Sorry to be a pain.
This tune haunts me like no other. It is so deep in my memories and it always makes me miss the time when we were all so into music, life and each other. The 70's and 80's gave us a life of magic that may never come our way again. I miss it more than words can say.
This song was always playing at the mall while I would buy soft pretzels and lemonade during the summer. Now as soon as I hear it, I can almost smell that fake butter smell of soft pretzels and hear the arcade around the corner from the pretzel place. It's such a specific association, but it always happens as soon as I hear this song. I miss that carefree freedom.
Grand theft auto vice city days!!!! I miss that time in the world. Everything made sense and was perfect to me😅. I was only 13 so what did I know lol. And older version of myself is screaming stay a kid for as long as you can. I know you guys are gonna relate to what I’m saying. Ice cream with ya family days not knowing you would grow up and miss it as much as you do. I’m 34 now and this takes me back for 4 mins and some change to my childhood. Thank you gang!!!!
Just recently I was going through my video library and started watching Rocky. This track comes out at the beginning of the movie when Rocky comes home after a fight. As the scene was unfolding with this track playing in the background, I got goosebumps. It’s amazing the effect that music can have on our state of mind. This timeless classic by Kool And The Gang is proof of that.
Foreal there’s all those types of people u show these songs to and they’re just like wtf? This shits legit can’t believe anyone would wanna diss such a dope track
As I am typing this, I’m living life, just graduated high school, being single at 19 and given the circumstances that my culture gets married very young, and I don’t regret dating or marrying anyone right now, and I couldn’t be happier with myself. This summer been treating me good so far, by far one of my best summers ever! Summer 2021! Plus, this song adds more of a feeling of freedom. 🤙🏽
When I hear this track, tears of joy and pain literally fall from my face. It brings back years of so many memories of lost loved ones, summertime block parties back in Brooklyn, New York and of course couples only skate at the roller rink. So beautifully composed and arranged. A timeless classic. Thank you Kool & The Gang.
One of the best instrumentals of all time jazz , fusion, easy listening all into one with great baseline, guitar and keyboards, why has no one cone near to making tracks like this
I was 7 when this track came out back in the 70's. And it still sounds so fresh in 2019. It takes me to another world. It makes me feel 20 years younger listening to this track.
When my Dad would pick up my sister and I on the weekends after my parents divorced in the late 70s, he would pick us up after he got off of work on Friday's. We lived in San Francisco/Daly City border and he lived in the East Bay in Concord and he would play this song when we'd drive across the Bay Bridge. The memories I have of this song (and album because he recorded his records on cassette (remember those?!) of listening to this song while watching the city lights, cars zooming past, boats on the Bay, lights from Alcatraz is all I see whenever I hear this song. The power of music is real.I also think it's funny that the only Will Smith song I like (post DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince) is 'Summertime'. I was lucky enough to have a Dad who listened to all kinds of music.
I had this on repeat in my Cadillac on a rare, wet and rainy Friday night driving through the west side of LA and I felt blessed to be able to have this experience 🙏🏾
Here in Detroit in the 80's, WNIC 100.3 had a segment called "Pillow Talk," hosted by the late, great Alan Almond. His deep, soothing voice and this song he always started the show off with this song... Plus I remember all the other soft rock songs he played on that show ... Man, takes me right back to bedtime in my childhood. Cozy little bungalow in our cute little neighborhood on the east side, summer time, windows opens, warm breeze blowing the curtains, the sounds and smells of summer evenings blowing in with the breeze, listening to this as I drift off to sleep. Good stuff. ❤️
Definitely remember Alan Almond's "Pillow Talk"...I recall he played a lot of Christopher Cross tunes. I grew up east side Detroit too, around Alter/Jefferson near Grosse Pointe-Detroit border. Good memories.
This song hit me like a dump truck yesterday and only managed to find it with some help today, and vague memories of Pillow Talk hit me. I couldn't remember the name or the name of the segment but I'd always listen to Pillow Talk while winding down for the night as a kid. Good times.
No words, no story. Just music letting you go to a place in your mind. At any point in the song, the band could've broken into a show off fest of solos, but instead they kept the vibe going. This music works so perfectly for many situations. Perfect for when you're with someone you love, or completely alone. You can tell the band was really feeling it too.
So far I heard this song in: Vice City( Fever 105), Boyz n the hood trailer, Rocky, Baby Boy, Tony hawk and when Izzy Adesanya used it as his walk out. I can't escape it!

Wow…well said!
Yes indeed!
I'm soon to be 70 and this was the lick..life was good.. At 20 I was living life. That's what time it was no drugs... definitely no drugs for this Oakland native...

One of the most beautiful soul songs of all-time. Truly ahead of its time.
Agreed!
Oh hey Beet.
better say' TIMELESS!
Well put sir.
I heard this in that smooth ass voice that's always on TV doing the commentary.
RIGHT ON!!!!
Probably the best instrumental of all time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎼🎵🎶
Indeed👍👍👍👍👍🙇

ALAN H hahah good joke
Nothing will ever compare to 70’s music
Victor Rogers 🔥🔥😁
This and Art of Noise - Moments in love are my favs
I discovered this thru a new friend at our pool. I never would have guessed it was Kool and the gang. The jazz sound is great
This tune haunts me like no other.
This is a classic and will never get old. Ear candy, mind relaxing 😎
Dang how old are you guys
Makes you want to cry don’t it?
I feel cheated, I wish I was born in the 60’s
This the type of song you play late night ridin through the city 😎💯👌🏾
Brandon Bowling for real cuz
+C.J Jay I agreed bro
Brandon Bowling Passing through Albuquerque, NM. about 12:15AM and this was playing. Felt invincible for a short time.
And a bit boozed after a party.
And I have, in Los Angeles, coming from the club, riding west on Wilshire Blvd. with the windows down, and a smile on my face. ~Pure Magic
This tune still sounds so fresh today. It's like it never went out of fashion.
It’s cause it’s jazz
Good music never get old
And it never will. Peace my friend
Right. Because it has not.
Yeah
This timeless classic by Kool And The Gang is proof of that.
love that scene and thats what got me hooked to this song
Precisely what brought me here!
I heard it watching Rocky just now and looked this up
I know this song well , I love it , I had no idea it was I. Rocky !!
Rocky's soundtrack helped make the movie what it is, it's essentially a character in it.

THAT WAS A BEAUTIFUL MEMORY.....THANK YOU FOR SHARING😊
You put images in my head, mann. That was beautiful.

No, thank you for reading! I rarely comment on TH-cam but this song, along with Breezin by George Benson, just brings back so many good memories.
I had this on repeat in my Cadillac on a rare, wet and rainy Friday night driving through the west side of LA and I felt blessed to be able to have this experience 🙏🏾

Spent years just hoping id come across this song. Hired a new guy at work at this is the first song he puts on the playlist. Legend.
I came here to read this comment! That’s how I heard this song living in Detroit
This song hit me like a dump truck yesterday and only managed to find it with some help today, and vague memories of Pillow Talk hit me. I couldn't remember the name or the name of the segment but I'd always listen to Pillow Talk while winding down for the night as a kid. Good times.
Got it going on
That’s how I remember it, Detroit and Alan Almond!
This dropped the summer I graduated from HS 1974. Our class was born in the middle of the Baby Boom (1956). Right on time. Timeless.

BEST SONG ON THE PLANET ❤
One of the greatest songs ever
EVER!
the vibe
No words, no story. Just music letting you go to a place in your mind. At any point in the song, the band could've broken into a show off fest of solos, but instead they kept the vibe going. This music works so perfectly for many situations. Perfect for when you're with someone you love, or completely alone. You can tell the band was really feeling it too.
that late night cruizing in L.A...
There is another song by Kool and the Gang that is similar; "Winter Sadness". It's a Kool song also. Check it out.
