Im pretty sure he has talked about this in a blog post before, he got it to work, but didnt implement it cuz it felt "virus-ie" and was unsettling to game stores like Steam
Didn't one shot do it though? They eventually changed it but still...
@@jmassagetherapist6773 oneshot doesnt delete itself it just only lets you play solstice once
wasn't there a game that would shut down your pc
@@jmassagetherapist6773 message got deleted because I accidentally typed out itchio link so anyways... The version that deleted itself wasn't ever on steam. The original free OneShot did delete all of your progress whenever you closed the window, only way to leave the game without closing the window was finding a bed and sleeping iirc. The paid OneShot which eventually got DLC didn't remove your data when you closed the window. That one is the one on itchio, steam, and consoles. You can get an achievement if you finish the game as intended though, not closing manually.
@@jmassagetherapist6773
the freeware ver of OneShot doesn't delete itself, but it instead saves your playthrough to the registry, making it near impossible to delete for any regular user
If this was actually the ending, it'd be more than a "lost ending". More like a lost game

@Unoriginal Creator Cuz the game would delete itself. Aka you "lose" the game from your computer

Alright someone get the annoying dog
Funny enough is doki doki literature club manage to do this, it literally uninstall itself when you finish
Well that's a nice fact
It actually doesn't. The character's files, yes, but not the game itself. The persistent file simply has a flag set to say that the script file could not be found. If this was true, you'd probably see a Ren'Py error or some other unusual behavior.
Also one shot.
Yeah but from what it looks like Toby wanted to delete the game and possibly make you pay for it again just because you did a genocide run which I guess is a fitting punishment but i could understand him not doing that.
@@plarteey1316 I don't think you can forcefully return the game like that unless it's for certain circumstances.

@@ygx6 what?
@@BlackholeSteve you keep a source of the code when compiling the exe (if he did that) so deleting it wouldn't be big of an issue
@@ygx6 oh yeah true, lel
when you compile a game it turns into an executable program, programs usually are in a text based programming language and computers are unable to read this. so what compiling does is create a binary version of the code that the pc can run. if he did delete the exe file he could still recompile the code
Likely Toby didn't realize that you can't delete a running program as there are fail-safes for it. You need to use a different program *apart* from the actual game that receives the "kill" signal and deletes the game, like an uninstaller.
yes, that's it. nowhere in the code does he make the game close itself before deleting.
BUT HE DOES IT AND CORRUPTS YOUR SAVE IN THE NEUTRAL RUN
HE FORGOR💀
@@bloxxerhunt1566 you can't run the code when you close the application. The game deletes your save before closing itself.
@@guavapaste the saves would be running with the game no?
But testing this shit would be pretty annoying. You see, most game engines have a feature where the game engine compiles and runs your code without having to compile an entire build, which is good, because compiling an build for a game takes a LOT of time. However, this feature does not create an .exe file, so for everytime Toby had to test his code, he would have to wait for hours to the engine to compile a build.
@@bloxxerhunt1566 No? A save is just a file. If it exists or not is irrelevent for the code to run. All the game need it for is for when you want to go back to where you stopped from, then they will read the data within the file and then overwrite every default value stat (like HP, LV, X and Y position, items in your inventory/inside a box, equipped weapons and armor, the room you are currently in, etc.). Deleting your save file mid gameplay will do nothing. If you quit before saving, it will simply behave like it does when you play for the first time, if you saved after deleting your save file, it will create a new one.
If Toby managed the to code the game to delete itself after Genocide, It would've turned into a creepypasta.
It also makes sense for Chara, trying to destroy the world, even though they tried every way they could.
So, instead, when we start the game, Chara keeps us from going to the Title Screen unless we take their deal.
They never deleted the world. They couldn't, from inside it.
Yea, also noice cotton candy girl pfp (amity)
to be fair chara isn’t evil. we manipulated a 12 year old by murdering everyone they knew and loved. i’d probably also delete the timeline, no point in just an empty world after all.
@@ccarmilluwallpa I mean, even if that IS the case... That would only further drive the parallel, if you ask me.
Consider: While Flowey is the "Demon of Repetition", he eventually is the one, after a True Pacifist run, to beg you to let this end. To let Frisk to enjoy their Happy Ending. And despite everything, he can't achieve either of his ideals, if the PLAYER wishes it: his repetition ends. And then, after, even his resolve to end cannot stop the PLAYER from continuing, if they really want.
Meanwhile, Chara wants to end everything. They say as much. But in the end, what does Chara do? The same thing they do every time: kill everyone. No pacifist endings exist anymore, once you've sold your SOUL. Only endless repetition of the same outcome can occur.
I mean, in the lore, Chara just erased everything in existence, and then brought it all back after you gave them your soul
@@conner4653 I mean... What proof do we have of that? None. Especially since, in the game that plays with the barrier between our world, and the game (and how many Secrets of the game are hidden in the files) it is entirely possible that this is meant to be canon.
I love how this technically isn't even a "scrapped" or "lost" ending, it's IN the game it just doesn’t work 💀
It would get treated like malware since it would actually be deleting files off of your computer without your consent. It’s like with what they did in Inscryption.
well it doesnt actually delete your file
So all applications are malware? As I am pretty sure that allmost all games can create files and delete them. And all deinstall application would also be malware then.tbh
im glad i quit playing inscription at act 2, it was false advertising anyway
@@waffler-yz3gwnow that I realize it, it kinda…was definitely false advertising. I wanted a full “sacrifices must be made” story type game, and though I know he likes to get meta with his games, as fun as inscryption was, I’d prefer being trapped with Leshy the full game
@@lulu111_the_cool they create and delete files within the games files. Thats totally ok. But deleting the game itself is deleting a program that you have put on your computer. If steam allowed that to be distributed there’s a good chance that some games would sneak in code to delete other programs on your computer
I think Undertale's meta aspects really help it drive its point home; doing something like this would put it in Imscared territory, which is a good thing
it may be a thing of the game engine, that doesn't let you delete the game because... reasons
Maybe trigger a thing to have steam uninstall undertale if you have the steam version.

It can't delete a file that's being used?
@@mousepotatoliteratureclubcorrect
Game Maker Studio spaghetti code shenanigans.
See a windows executable can't delete itself because the file is open while it's running. One way to get around this is to write a batch file (.bat) that waits for the .exe to close, then deletes it, then deletes itself. (Though Steam would probably interpret this as damage and helpfully fix it). Its also odd because windows filenames aren't case sensitive.
You probably wouldnt even need a batch file since there are many ways to force shut programs
Edit: though I did not think about how the game could delete something after it was shut but yeah you'd need a batch file in that case

Imagine buying undertale and playing the genocide ending first with this ending activated
It is very difficult to make the genocidal route without being on purpose already
@@Fosito unless you were starting the game blind, and played too much Pokémon in the past
Honestly, adding in something like shiny monsters would cause a lot more "accidental" genocide runs, where someone would try to find all the shiny monsters in the ruins, kill everything for the sake of it, then proceed to get "But nobody came."
if you get genocide by accident you're pretty much guaranteed to be an awful person regardless of it being a game, it's easy to mess up even intentionally doing it with the nobody came screen popping up after you kill most of the monsters in an area, and with each area being comprised of sub-areas with their own sets of monsters, and then beating undyne and sans as well as mercilessly killing Toriel and Papyrus.
That's on the level of first degree murder you have to really be out to get Innocent characters for no reason to do that first try
It would also be hard for the game to remember its own erasure (maybe not I don't know much about programming). It would also be annoying for speedruns and secret seekers to redownload the game every time.

But you can schedule the operating system to delete it after you force it to close.
Doki doki did it just fine.
@@Underd0g562 Doki Doki's error message is fake, the program file is still there and works just fine, but a flag in the save data tells it to give an error instead of actually running.
There's plenty of TH-cam videos out there explaining how all the tricks work, they are clever but they aren't doing some dark magic to defy the laws of computing. They even work within the limitations of a very simple game engine, there's almost no code in the game, most of the code comes pre-packaged in the engine.
Even so, There are plenty of ways to get away with deleting the program you're currently running, most of them are roundabout (like the one I listed in the original comment), I don't think there are any games which actually do that though, likely due to requirements set by publishers

Then I played Mario kart 8
Also this would be a pain to implement on console editions, and hot take, I don’t think anyone would be too happy if the game they just bought deleted itself with no refunds.
You can reinstall games you've deleted lol
To be fair, if a game could delete files, imagine if it just deleted system 32 after you kill papyrus because WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO KILL PAPYRUS
Fun fact: The reason it didn't work was because the script was in the files of the game, meaning the script would try to delete itself as it runs. It probably would've worked if he had just called a different script that wasn't hardcoded into the game, that deletes it, instead.
I love the story that code can sometimes tell, because you already see the finished project and know how it all turns out, but the majority of the story you find is just pure frustration
I just did Undertale hard mode (the one where you name yourself frisk) and then I got roasted by Flowey , and Toby the dog decided to come in for pie. Love this game.
I still think it should have ended with San's big play actually working, and it's just the final scene of the fight forever
Btw if a word ends with “s” and you want it to be possessive it’s spelt like Sans’
Imagine having to reinstall the game, every time you do a genocide run
afaik you can delete the savefiles and basically ultra true reset the game

undertale is literally a paid game, thats stealing

Undertale genocide original ending: *FAILS*
Doki Doki Literature Club: "Ha now we shall be the only game to delete ourselves"
Character files, not the game itself.
The issue is windows will not let you delete a running application, the only way this would work if it was another app running that detected if you finished genocide and deleted undertale itself
You forgot to say. After something first force it to close
The reason why he never implemented was due to fear that anti virus software would view it as malware
i'd honestly be mad, I PAID 10$ FOR THIS SHT
You would still be able to reinstall it
Until you realize you would be able to redownload it for free
I like how it works in the final version better, with your save file affected by a file you “can’t” delete
The reason why this might not work is because the game is open. It's not possible to delete a program that's open, at least in Windows if you don't somehow force it to.
My favorite thing is watching one of your weird news reporter type shorts and then coming across one of these.
You beat the genocide and you get a notification saying your refund was accepted
Chara is so powerful that she literally made Toby stop doing what was the original purpose, to show a reminder of what you did.
Imagine paying for a game only for it to delete itself💀
I know EA would start doing this
If the code shown is really the one. Then all he wanted to do was delete the exe file. Which would make the game not be playable. But you could just reinstall the game. After deleting it right. As all other files would still be there
EA: write that down, WRITE THAT DOWN!!!
Well I'm pretty sure that it will be free if you buy it once.
Reinstall
He tryed all the up and low caps but he cant make work....
I JUST DIALED EVERY PHONE NUMBER UNTIL I GOT YOURS -papyrus
Only the executable is deleted and most operating systems dont allow a file to be deleted while its being used
he could have just made it so that when opened, the game will be just a black void, with "*but nobody came" written
and to reset you will have to do a hidden puzzle or something idk (whatever it can be, after resetting, Chara will tell you about it after the ending of any route)
Like you appear in battle (cuz in gen. It would take you to battle and say *but no one came, so you could just use the arrow keys and fight and cuz chara took ur soul and now u are chara, you killed your self and she isnt in possesion of your soul and you can run from her out of battle and hit a checkpoint. Then when you open the game, it does the noraml menu and just out reset. That would be cool.
That is a decent idea, and works perfectly in the lore. Your DETERMINATION is so powerful that it brings back the entire world.
The power that was used to bring you back, now bringing back everything.
It was scrapped as it made Undertale seen as a virus by antiviruses
I love how he left in every individual attempt
*Then there's the original **_'Oneshot'_** that deleted itself if you even closed it lol*
Oh you said it. You need to close it.
That’s because it wasn’t a steam game and when it was you could open and close at will without trouble but because steam protects against viruses it would think this application is deleting files then it doesn’t let it on also Toby posted about it he said it felt to much like a virus so when he figured it out he decided not to implement it
Me searching for the comment of that one guy that knows why it didn’t work:
Chara had a skill issue and failed to destroy Tobys code.
Dog is too strong! xD
the game has much determination that it can't be deleted
Knowing Toby, I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually on purpose for people to find it
No, it's just leftover code for a scrapped feature. Not everything left in the games by Toby is for some cryptic secret, he's also human and changed his mind on things while making Undertale.
I think it’s worth noting that Toby is… not very good at programming. Or at least, wasn’t very good while working on Undertale. That’s not a slight against him, btw, he’s a fantastic composer and storyteller, it would be a pretty damn big feat if he was also an expert programmer. But no, he’s pretty bad compared to other, more experienced programmers. It leads to a lot of funny shit like this tho, so I don’t mind!
@@puffena9013this was his practice game aswell
The reason I find this really funny is because all the fan games are based around constant genocide route after genocide route. When I’m reality that couldn’t have been the case if Toby had gotten the code to work as intended.

After your First genocide, some Game Dialog Changes and even a true reset cant undo it
I feel like it would be a better ending, because in the original it literally rewards you with an epic Sans fight and a new character you never even saw before. Just imagine Sans never appeared and then you kill Asgore then you are just in an empty void, can’t even play the game again. That would actually punish the genocide players
the difference probably wouldve just been chara actually deleting the game. and you could just.... redownload it.

Fun fact: toby actually got it to work but he scrapped the idea because he thought it would worry the players and tbh id freek out too is my game deleted after genocide
For those wondering the most likely reason it didn't work is because apps aren't given write permissions to the directory they are installed to. For this to have worked, on windows, the app would have had to be run with administrator privileges. Nowadays though most apps are containerized and cant even see their install directory.

And then when you install the game again in steam and did the pacifist route you would see that chara killed everyone and get revealed that the data was never completely destroyed
Funnily enough, I am pretty sure Toby also tried doing the same for when Flowey takes over renaming Undertale into Floweytale, however I could be wrong and it's just something I came across in the making of one of my mods.
imagine you buy the game and end up losing it because of this, other than that imagine how annoying it would be to re-download the game every time you do genocide
this was implimented in older patches of deltarune chapter one, where if you used the survey_program file to uninstall the game, itd also uninstall its directory, which could include essential system files on your computer depending on where it was installed
he likely didnt have this feature for a similar reason, and just never learned his lesson lol. or he just couldnt get it to work.
