    H/H match update and preview of the week ahead:
    ...
    This is now week 261 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455), so our final curtain draws ever nearer. These episodes were taped on July 23, 1978, and originally aired in mid-September of 1978.
    This week, Brett & Charles are in their places with bright, shiny faces, and they're joined by:
    ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg, returning after two weeks off for her 81st week (of 90). Fannie's H/H stats are great: 48.6% (18 matches in 37 attempts).
    ~~~Dick Martin, back after three weeks off for his 17th week (of 22 total). It's his turn to sit in Richard Dawson's former spot. Dick's answered 2 H/H questions so far, but hasn't scored his first match yet.
    ~~~Tab Hunter, appearing for his one and only week on the panel.
    ~~~Last but not least, Marilu Henner, appearing for her one and only week on the panel.
    This will be our fourth post-Richard week, with the fourth familiar male guest panelist sitting in Richard's former chair. Had I been producing the show, my goal would've been to treat it like the male version of the sixth seat and develop a "bench" of 4 to 6 stable semi-regulars to rotate in. Maybe that's what they're trying to do. Another option would be to hire a new regular, but then that "replacement" would likely draw endless (unfavorable) comparisons to Mr. Dawson.
    Last week turned out well with familiar faces Gary and Marcia and big-personality McLean, but I think the best touch was Loni who turned out to be a charming and likeable panelist (and a decent game player). So I have to admit that a new face doesn't necessarily "weaken" a panel, but I think having two one-week-only celebs together this week is poor scheduling. (But I reserve the right to change my mind after I see them in action.) I really feel that with Richard gone, they should emphasize bringing back as many old "friends" as they can (fan favorites), or introducing new recurring panelists (like Loni). Having random celebs sit in for just a single week risks turning MG into another average game show. Match Game's true magic lies in the relationships built when viewers see the stars as old friends that visit their living rooms again and again over a period of weeks, months, and years.
    Today's Action:
    On the last program, our new champ had just won $500 from the audience match when time expired, so this is one of those rare days where we start right off with a head-to-head match! Let the wheel spin!
    And the wheel says... Tab! And it's a double!
    Stats: Tab's been on the panel less than three minutes so far, so this is his first Match Game question of any kind!
    More Stats: 10 of the past 21 H/H questions have resulted in a match (47.6%). For the entire Star Wheel era, there have been 27 matches in 59 attempts (45.8%). The last six consecutive H/H questions have given us zero matches!
    Panel comparison: Charles has matched 37 of his 74 attempts (50.0%), Fannie has matched 18 of her 37 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 35 of her 79 attempts (44.3%), Dick Martin has had 2 attempts so far without a match yet, this is Tab Hunter's first attempt, and Marilu Henner hasn't yet been chosen.
    *Today's (first) H/H question: "Liquid_______"*
    (Liquid soap? No, too modern. Liquid Paper aka "Wite Out"? I used that typewriter correction fluid in the 1980s. Liquid Gold (a cleaning product)? Liquid detergent? Liquid helium? Liquid assets? Okay, I give up. I'll say liquid assets.)
    Tab doesn't take long to write and file his answer. I didn't see Brett leaning in at all, so it seems he got no assistance or feedback at all. I'd say he even looks fairly confident.
    Just before she gave her answer I thought of "Liquid Bubble/s", a product kids played with a lot back then.
    Unpause video. The champion hesitates then answers "Liquid gas." The audience response is about a 0 on the positivity scale. (They don't like it much at all.) Tab looks disappointed. Gene queries the audience, and I hear "Liquid Gold."
    In fact, the audience matches Tab. He wrote "Gold."
    No H/H match this time.
    ~~~~~
    Well, it took FOUR questions before we got our first match of the day! And it was Charles's improbable "Sent Out" that gave our champion her second victory. Might we say she won by a hair? (A hair that had been sent out, as Charles lifts his hat to reveal.)
    *Today's audience match question: "Stewart________"*
    (My thoughts: I got zilch. I'll pass today. Name questions, bluck!)
    The celebs: Dick (Granger), Fannie ('s Folly / Schwartz), Charles (Please) - Okay, now I don't feel so bad. The stars gave four answers, three of them were nonsense. If I were the contestant, I'd say Granger, which got good audience applause. It's got to be up there somewhere.
    The choice: Granger
    The answers: Little, Whitman, Granger
    The second time in a row our champion has scored the top audience match answer. On to the wheel!
    This time it's... Brett! And it's a double!
    Stats: This is the seventh time the wheel has landed on Brett (that's more than any other celeb to date). This is also her fourth double, and she's matched 3 of the 6 wheel questions so far. Brett last played in 1289 (twice), 1269 and 1254. She's matched 5 of her last 8 attempts (62.5%), and 16 out of her 28 most recent attempts (57.1%). Her overall success rate is 44.3% and this is her 80th attempt (no one but Richard has answered more H/H questions).
    More Stats: 10 of the past 22 H/H questions have resulted in a match (45.5%). For the entire Star Wheel era, there have been 27 matches in 60 attempts (45.0%). The last seven consecutive H/H questions have given us zero matches!
    Panel comparison: Charles has matched 37 of his 74 attempts (50.0%), Fannie has matched 18 of her 37 attempts (48.6%), Brett has matched 35 of her 79 attempts (44.3%), Dick Martin has had 2 attempts so far without a match yet, Tab Hunter has had 1 attempt without a match, and Marilu Henner hasn't yet been chosen.
    *Today's (second) H/H question: "_______of it"*
    (Really? They just don't want to give away any money lately, I guess. In the past, after a couple of misses, a really easy H/H question would come up. Now we're at 7 straight misses and we get another hard one. ~~~ I'm "Sick" of it! Ha!!!! All of it? Most of it? Some of it? The long and short of it? The majority of it? The best part of it? You don't know the half of it? I think a match today would be a miracle! I'll say my first thought: "Sick.")
    Brett doesn't have an immediate response either (not surprising). She's looking around at her colleagues for suggestions. It's an odd H/H question. She reads the card then begins to write almost immediately. I'm glad something came to her. Meanwhile the champion looks less than pleased. I don't blame her. Cut back to Brett who seems to be considering Tab's suggestion(s). It looks like she's shuffling through 3 or 4 cards! Gene playfully (?) admonishes her to hurry up already, which she does. It seems like she scribbles a new answer and shoves it in the slot. Ding.
    The champion is ready this time. "Just for the heck of it," she says. One of countless valid answers, but not on my list. Generally, though, a shorter answer seems more likely than a long one (and hers is 4 words), so I'm pretty sure how this is going to end. The audience reaction was a little less negative than last time, so maybe a 1 on the positivity scale. (Gene seems to hint that they would match "Just for the hell of it," although I'm pretty sure we won't find out for sure.)
    Let's see if Brett chose one of my many answers... No. "What" is her final answer. This is the rare occasion that Brett and I are not on the same wavelength. I don't care for her answer, but I have to agree it's a valid response. This has got to be the lousiest H/H question I can remember, and I've played along to every single one since episode 1 (minus the missing episodes, of course).
    No H/H match today.
    ~~~Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy:
    (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she or he has "retired" from the show and their H/H stats are now complete.)
    (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.)
    Orson Bean - 100% (4 matches in 4 attempts).
    Joyce Bulifant - 80.0% (4 matches in 5 attempts).
    (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 matches in 4 attempts).
    Gary Burghoff - 62.5% (5 matches in 8 attempts).
    (TIE) Charles - 50.0% (37 matches in 74 attempts).
    (TIE) Betty - 50.0% (23 matches in 46 attempts).
    Fannie - 48.6% (18 matches in 37 attempts).
    (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 matches in 18 attempts).
    Brett - 43.8% (35 matches in 80 attempts).
    (*)Richard - 42.5% (373 matches in 878 attempts).
    Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 matches in 15 attempts).
    *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1301, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

    Seward bought Alaska in 1867, so it would have been Andrew Johnson's administration, not Lincoln's. Also, I'm glad the audience match had Stewart Little, even though it's a different spelling for Stewart. It was the only thing I could think of apart from Stewart Townsend, who was a mere kid and wouldn't have been on anyone's radar in 1978.
