I've been watching your maple videos and you have come a long ways! I have a 10 gallon preheater pan that sets on top of big pan then to the float valve and works great.

I enjoy your video's and share your passion for the outdoors and do it yourself mind set. I started making syrup small scale last season and fell in love with it in northern NY. You're an old sole my friend and keep up the good work. Your enthusiasm is contagious and I like that your not afraid to show learning curves along the way. Don't know why we get excited about things like float boxes and boiling, guys like us just do : )

Thanks for your videos. They inspired me to build a file cabinet evaporator with steam table trays like your 1.0 this year. A couple weeks with 30 taps and I have 4.5 gallons of syrup! Looking forward to 2.0 next year or maybe skip ahead to 3.0.

IN the Midwest we often have what we call "the January thaw". Our neighbor's dad, taps and makes maple syrup then, says it's sweetest then.
A tip : to finish the syrup at the kitchen stove where the temperature can be better controlled with a candy thermometer to monitor.
    Love the float valve!

I live in Michigan and I watch the weather really good and I'm already outside checking my traps in January. Ans when we get a couple of days in the 40's I collect about 20 gallons of early sap. I have a 120 quart pot that I make that early gold syrup on and it's the sweetest syrup I've ever tasted.

I like your practical "use what you got" approach. That sugar float is really something! Of course, here in SoCal we don't have the trees but it's great to learn about all the same! Gotta go plant garlic now that your other video had inspired me! TA!

Google listening to my activities, again!
I've got 30 buckets hanging in a very small sugar bush here in northern Vermont.
I made a half gallon of syrup on two turkey fryers this afternoon. One to preheat in a small pot and one thats maintaining a rolling boil in a big pot. I filtered with a paper maple filter from the local hardware store. Awesome stuff! I've done it this way for many years. It's cheap and fun.
So I'll let you all guess what's in my recommendations, even though I never typed or searched a thing about it...

How do you adjust the depth of the sap, using the nut and screw on the float. How far do you rotate that screw. Does the nut serve to save the position previously used?

They don't have to be sugar maples bud! You can get delicious maple syrup from nearly all maple trees,,, just that sugar maple gives the most! I'm boiling down 80L (21gal) of sap from 8 "mountain maple" at this moment. I expect to get 200L (52gal) this season. I should get around 4L (1gal) of syrup. The syrup is very sweet and distinct. I live on a large Island in the north Atlantic. Cheers!

Eric, I was wondering if your system would benifit from the auto draw off units that can be purchased. I was wondering if it would be worth it as with your float box you could just keep feeding the wood to the firebox and never have to worry about watching it when it comes time to draw off syrup!
Let me know as I’m curious myself!
