This wasn't a loss. It was a learning experience. It reminds us all to take a second to make sure the mandrel isn't bent. I'm looking forward to seeing turn the orange blank. Orange is my favorite color.
Thank you Angi,
The first half of the orange blank was recorded differently than I normally do it. I need to finish it the same way and see how it turns out.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, Thank you so much for posting this video as it shows people that things don't always work out as planned.
It did look like an amazing blank.
Take care Bob.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw,
I was loving the colors and it broke my heard when the blank exploded. 😞
Regards,
Bob
This is what we call an opportunity to learn and grow. There's still a lot of great information in this video. Thanks for this video, Bob.
Thank you Robert.
It was a fun video to make.
Regards,
Bob
thank you for letting us learn from your mistakes. You are still the master!
Thank you Scott,
Just real rusty these days.
Regards,
Bob
Very unfortunate but this just proves why you are one of the best. I started out with your videos and I really appreciate it. Thank you!
Thank you,
I truly appreciate you watching.
Regards,
Bob
A good work done anyway no matter the results. Thanks for sharing with us, looking forward for the next one !👍
Thank you Kwstas.
Regards,
Bob
Here something else I did with that small crack you will need to produce some saw dust from the purple blank anyway put just a little CA glue on that small crack and work in the dust you produce from sanding work it into that crack as good as you can spray a little of that freeze to set up the CA and let it set for about 15 minutes hopefully it works for you. You might need to do it a 2nd time. Good luck
Thank you Ray.
Regards,
Bob
Bob just offering an idea with blank that blew out how about covering all around that end with CA glue and use the Activator and at least set for about 15 minutes then just sand with 150 sand paper and just to get it smoth then put a little more CA again let it set for 15 minutes again now I think you can use your turning tool and just go nice and easy.
That would work.
I decided not to mess with the blank and offered it up to my Patrons to attempt the repair. One of them took me up on it. 😀
Regards,
Bob
Ánimo amigo. Great Job.
Thank you Alberto.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, I've been having one of those weeks so far myself. I just didn't like the fit on the first one and the second one cracked on the end when I was pressing it together - even though I filed, chamfered, and waxed the inside of the tube before pressing. As you said, win-some, lose-some. - Dave
I hate to hear that Dave. Pressing is the worst time to lose a blank because of all the work it took to get it to that point.
Regards,
Bob
It looks like when you glued the errant chunk in the first time, you pretty much only put CA on the wood. You didn't actually glue the chunk to the TUBE. I had a mesquite blank blow apart on me last week, so I feel your pain.
It’s a real bummer to lose one.
Regards,
Bob
I successfully sharpened a well used carbide cutter with a diamond stone.
I’ve heard that is possible but I haven’t tried it yet.
Regards,
Bob
Might still be possible to get a pen from it - If you have some complementary offcut and a plan you like. you could turn away the end or ends back to brass tube and glue on new materials to frame the centre for example.
I sent those blanks to one of my patrons. The’ll take a shot at it.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner nice idea!
Bugger. Looked like it would have been a great blank. Maybe add white acrylic accent pieces on the ends. Could possibly salvage it. I had a blank break on me yesterday. Made some nice dark wood accents.
It could easily be salvaged. I opted to send it to one of my Patrons and let them have a go at the repair.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, I bet if you turned the ends of both blanks back down to the brass, enough to get rid of the chipped part and then epoxy some black ebonite or acrylic onto the, they would look nice on that chrome cigar kit. Also, it may have been my imagination, but I could swear that the mandrel was flexing when you applied pressure with the skew. Weird.
Thanks David,
I gave those blanks away to one of my Patrons. I didn’t feel like messing with them any further.
Looking at the video, it does look more prominent when the skew is next to the mandrel. I don’t think it showed as well on the video as it looked locally.
Regards,
Bob
That sucks! It was looking pretty good there! Oh well! On to the next one!
Thank you,
Yes there’s always another blank to turn.
Regards,
Bob
Nice of you to share something that went wrong. I think I had the same problem ladt week-end turning a pen. Question, what can make à mandrell go out of round, not turning straight??? Keep-on turning.
LOL, not really sure what made this one out of round. It happens. I haven’t bought one yet because I’m going to MATE in 2 weeks and I thought I’d see if I can buy one there.
Regards,
Bob
@Louilouaaa Sometimes if you over tighten the tailend it can bend the mandrel.
I just recheck my mandrel this afternoon. It is a little bent. It fell on the floor the other day. I guess that is when it got bent. Got to get a new one this week.
Oh I forgot to mention that same blow out happened to me and so that was what I did for my blow out.
It’s a solid solution that works most of the time. I’ve had good luck doing that.
Regards,
Bob
...novice here...my slimlines all came out well (ten so far). Moved up to the euro style...while cleaning up the tenon edge with a square carbide chisel, the side of the chisel caught the upper edge of the tenon and ripped the wood apart. Worst part? This happened twice even though I was being extremely careful on the second one. Luckily, there was enough wood left to turn them down into slimlines...
My third euro came out nicely with just the parting tool...
Any chance you can salvage these into another style?
Keep up the great work...👍
Matt
Hello Matt,
I decided to just move on and I sent the blanks to one of my Patrons to play with.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner ...well, that was another cool idea I hadn't thought of...👍
Matt
I get that kind of wobble if I try to use a mandrel saver without the nut. With the nut, the mandrel is under tension and doesn’t wobble.
Thanks John,
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, Maybe you can go back a little bit clean out that crack and fill it with a little nail polish on a similar color. I have done that a few times and you could not see the blemish. Ron USCG RET
Nice idea. I sent the blanks to one of my Patrons and they’re going to fix them.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for taking the time to show me that everyone has those incidents.
You’re welcome Mark,
We all have them and anyone who says they don’t isn’t being truthful.
Regards,
Bob
Nice trying to work through it. Bummer when things go wrong, just wasn’t meant to be I reckon.
It happens to the best of us. Sometimes there’s no escaping.
Regards,
Bob
What mandrel do you think you will go with? I'm also in the market for one.
I still like the Pen. state Mandrel Saver.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner That the tail stock Saver, right? What about the mandrel itself? I'm thinking about the Keyless Pen Mandrel System.
I haven’t looked at those. I meet get serious or I’m gonna need one and not have it. I’ve been so focused on the show.
@@RJBWoodTurner Completely makes sense... we all have to focus our time. I'm focusing on learning and refining my sharpening process.
If I get one, I'll let you know what I think.
I’ll ask around at the show. Someone there may know something about them or have one for sale.
Great time to cut your losses. Looks like it would’ve been great. But failures are awesome learning experiences.
Thank you George?
They certainly are.
Regards,
Bob
That would have been a great looking pen. Very unfortunate
Thank you Dave,
I was really looking forward to finishing this one.
Regards,
Bob
Sorry
Thank you,
It happens to all of us. 😀

Bob
