    Going back to the basics now and this time I'm gonna incorporate negative reinforcement to improve reliability. There is always something new on this channel to learn

    I gotta say, I love your videos. I just recently started training my family friend’s Labrador, following your advice has already gotten him to stop jumping on people in the short training session. You’ve helped me to properly prepare for him

    Super difference stated here at the end of the video. My "Buddy" with positive reinforcement only, at some point in the training, opts out . Negative reinforcement means I keep control of the duration of the training- Cool! I'll make sure to follow the negative session with some fun.

      I like to use freeze-dried dog food or Keto Dog Food from Visionary Pet. :) Super healthy and most dogs love it! visionarypet.com/collections/shop-ketogenic-dog-food

    Hi Nate. Leash pressure would remove the need for a harness right? Or can you apply the same principles to a harness? I’m curious if you recommend a harness or collar when walking in busy areas.

    • @JanineMKartist
      @JanineMKartist ปีที่แล้ว

      There is the easy walk harness that has a martingale at the front . So my guess it would be similar. Not sure. My puppy still need to grow into hers . Still a bit loose at the front , but miles better than a soft puppy harness

    Hi Nate, I have a 16 week old GSD X Aussie Shepherd, who seems quite resistant to going to the ‘Down’ position when using leash pressure. Any tips for making headway with this? She seems to get sit after a little while but most training sessions seem to be the same. Also - we use a harness on most walks, with leash pressure being predominantly around the neck, do dogs recognise similar pressure if you’re using a harness after training? Thanks in advance for any response.

      Hi Oscar, You can use something the dog already knows to teach the leash pressure. Here's a breakdown: We can make this process easier by using something the dog already knows to get them to quickly learn this concept. It will go like this:
      • First, apply leash pressure.
      • Next, after the pressure has been applied, you will use luring (or anything else that can get your pup into the down) to guide your dog into the desired position. For example: if we want to use leash pressure to get the dog into the down position, we would apply pressure first-then once the dog feels the pressure, we would lure the dog into the down with a piece of food. This will help teach the dog the leash pressure-which occurs because whatever comes first is what you are teaching your dog. So, in this situation-it’s the leash pressure.
      • Turn the leash pressure off.
      • Mark and reward.
      Demo: th-cam.com/video/9L8tK7mSD10/w-d-xo.html
      You can also teach your dog to respond to the harness. Start the pressure on the harness and then reinforce with the leash and collar. After enough reps the dog will respond to the pressure on the harness.
      Demo: th-cam.com/video/E7ztsl09dOI/w-d-xo.html
      I hope this helps!
      Cheers!

    Hey Nate, I know this is an old video, but I was wondering - do you get the sense that this particular dog was understanding the downward leash pressure? I feel like I've seen something similar with a few young dogs. They seem to get upward pressure almost immediately. Is that because sitting UP from a down brings them closer to the reward and going down brings them further away?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Leash pressure is much easier to teach once the dog knows how to follow the lure into the sit and the down. Sit is always easier to teach in general. I believe its because the dog wants to look up at us and when they do it naturally makes them sit. :)

    Is this okay to do with a flat collar?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just be sure to apply very light pressure. Remember, it's really more of a cue than pressure. :)

    Nate, after watching most of your videos I find that you rarely say the word "NO". Do you use it and when? thank you

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I first introduce in obedience when teaching the stay command. I also use it before a correction, if I need to stop a bad behavior that could be dangerous for the dog, such as chasing cars. Lastly, if you are unable to get the results that you need using reward-based training techniques, then you may need to use corrections. Remember, everything our dogs do is based on motivation. They are either motivated to access something pleasant or motivated to prevent something unpleasant. Whichever factor is the most motivating will determine the dog's behavior. If you feel you need to add corrections in your training, here are some online resources that will teach you how to do it correctly to maximize your results:
      Here is a video I put together on adding corrections using either a martingale collar or pinch collar: facebook.com/nathan.schoemer/videos/10213850487672790/

    My dog will not lie down using the martengale. Could the collar be too loose? This collar is a martengale but it doesn't have a chain. My dog will lie down when I ask her the regular way (no martingale.)

    Hello, Great channel and just subscribed, I have a German Shepherd Puppy who is now 14 weeks, he will walk quite happily on and off the lead when I am away from the house but when first walking away from home (with the lead on) he seems to just sit or lay down on all 4's, I've tried just waiting till he starts to walk again then praise him, I have tried to pull on the lead but this make him sit even longer, sometimes it takes me 15 mins just to walk 50 yards yet other days it only takes me a minute to do the same distance, this always happens when leaving the front of my house, never when away from home, at first I thought it was the traffic but If I turn around and go back towards home he will happily walk, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Jason and thanks for supporting the channel. Believe it or not, this is a common problem and you're doing nothing wrong. Some dogs just do this behavior, but there is a way to fix it. Check out this video that I posted on my TH-cam Facebook community page: facebook.com/NateSchoemer/videos/926884931085023/

      My doberman did this as a puppy. Would even sit backwards facing home while I was waiting for a traffic light to change so we could cross the street. Probably looked pretty ridiculous. Good luck. Since you are here on Nate's channel, I am sure you will come up with a great solution.

      My aussie puppy did this if we left for a walk from home - we struggled until it was time to go home then he would walk quite happily beside me and when he saw our house he started pulling. Accidentally I discovered if we drove even a short distance away he would be just fine on the walk. My uncle told me it was the herding dog wanting to stay on the homestead. He was also okay if the other dogs and my husband went on walk. He became accustomed to going for walks after a few weeks.

    So I notice you are always having the dog down from a sit. do you use leash pressure to down from a stand? I would want my dog to down from a stand as well as sit.
