  • This is an unboxing and full review of the Walthers Mainline EMD SW7. Of course, I got mine in PRR livery, but there are 7 other roadnames to choose from in this run of SW7s. This is a great locomotive for the price and has ample pulling power in such a tiny package. Enjoy, and remember, I have a playlist of reviews now, so check them out.

Just an FYI. The hole in the styrofoam behind the engine is so you can push your finger thru and release the locomotive from the styrofoam packaging.

While noted, thanks for the information. The bigger issue is getting the loco back in safely.

Soundtraxx has a brake that's holds the loco until released, like that F9 feature.

I like Sountraxx a lot, too. I may have an Athearn to show off with it in the future.

Very nice! I'm looking to get one of these for a custom project, but I'm having a hard time being able to tell through pictures and videos...is the paint on the PRR units more of a black or an olive green? Thanks!

It is PRR Brunswick Green or Dark Green Locomotive Enamel. It's mostly black with a tinge of green. They didn't change locomotive colors when they went from steam to diesel.

I believe it is ESU sound not LokSound 5. I bought some of these a little while ago and the sound models came with ESU Sound.. While ESU Sound (a budget decoder) does quite well, there is no place to solder a ESU power pack capacitor. I got the same models (Illinois Central and Indiana Harbor Belt) but in DCC ready.version. The ESU Sound model I eventually did a total replacement of the board and put in LokSound 5 micro and was able to fit in the ESU power pack. The LokSound ready locomotives I was able to put the power pack in the cab with a little surgery to the plate that holds the two figures inside. The stock speaker on these units sounds quite good I think. Regards, NS.

It's ESU Loksound v5 (R). The R is reduced. It's not the full gambit of Loksound v5 sound in a full chip but instead comes with a limited number of functions made specifically for certain locomotive so they can sell it cheaper. You are spot on, though. The speakers in this locomotive are excellent for the price.

@@Zmanmodelrailroads Thanks! If I didn't put a ESU power pack on all my locomotives, then this one would have been ready to go as is. Even though it is Mainline Walthers, it still gets grab irons and metal couplers. A great value. I will stay it is not the easiest shell to get off by a long stretch. Great review btw. Regards, NS.
