I went to Palm Sunday mass at the Church of John Coltrane a few years back. It was 3 hours of spirituality and free jazz. A truly life changing experience.

Thanks Chase, I have been listening to Trane since I was four in 1957. Listening today in 2023 I feel reborn as if I was listening to him anew. Beautiful!

You had pretty hip parents. Or you were a precocious child!

I just love these lessons! You mentioned Ken Burns. I bought those DVDs and CDs when they first came out. Your series is every bit as good, if not better! Thank you.

Apples and oranges, I would say, but I thank you for the compliment. He is a researcher and documentary filmmaker by trade; I am a jazz musician (and educator who had to turn a PowerPoint presentation into videos in a hurry during Covid). Hopefully my perspective and insight as a musician adds something unique to the series.

Great documentary with some excellent samples of the music of John Coltrane. One minor correction: The song "My Favorite Things" was sung by Julie Andrews in the film "The Sound of Music", not "Mary Poppins", which also starred Andrews.

Mea culpa. (I know my jazz better than my movies.)

Julie Andrews sang "My Favorite Things" as Maria in the movie "The Sound of Music".

Chase, do you notice the distance from the microphone the horn players use in these gigs up until fusion began? The music is acoustic. Sounds good this way and easier for the sound person. Just my observation.

There's a lot to be said for just capturing the sound the way it sounded.

It turns out he performed A Love Supreme live three times. They released the penthouse performance i think last year. I don't know where the third performance was played but i think a partial recording survived. I have a live recording of a tune that they named " Blue Valse " that sounds like A Love Supreme to me.
The " i want to become a Saint " was a reference to something Sonny Rollins said.
I am referring to a recent article by Lewis Porter.

There is a partial recording of ALS pt2 "Resolution" being played at a club in New Jersey a month or two *before* the studio recording in December 64.
Also, the tune listed as "Blue Valse" from the Antibes concert is actually a quartet version of Ascension!

    Do Whynton Kelly

All the videos in this series were created to teach a university course. Time constraints limited the number of artists that were covered. You should hear a bit of Wynton Kelly soon in the episodes on Miles.

I always liked Trane's ballads because more spiritual feeling then romantic

Interesting thought. He always sounded like he was on a quest.
