Finish off your February by diving into some romantic tragedy with us as we watch the gothic classic Wuthering Heights. The passion is palpable. We also talk Oscars.
In Seen It, we discuss more Oscar bait -- Wall Street wolves, American hustles and melancholy monochrome portraits of the midwest.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

I'm in the midst of compiling my favorite episodes of wttb for my own personal pleasure and I can't get over how great this episode is. Not to detest the other episodes, I am still an avid viewer, I just felt compelled to say how great this one is. It's so fun to watch and every segment is funny and interesting. Thank you for, unintentionally, honoring one of my favorite movies of all time and making me laugh.

Christian Bale gets props just for his performance in The Machinist. Not very many actors are willing to put their body through such extremess just for a movie role, but he did and my god, the end result worked. The film was deeply unsettling.

I just watched Nebraska after hearing you guys talk about it, and since I've never been to the Midwest, I was amazed at how similar it is to life here in Canada. I know what Matt means about it being close to home, though. I think that's why it's so good.

Chekhov's gun does show up later in the book -- and it's used to show Heathcliff in a slightly positive light. As far as Chekhov's marriage goes, Heathcliff's wife get's pregnant, runs away, dies, and Heathcliff takes custody of his sickly son so he can marry Cathy's daughter. Shenanigans ensue.

Hey guys, thanks for letting me know that a movie version of Watership Down exists. I can't remember what episode you talked about it, but I love the book so I wanted to see it. Husband and I watched it last weekend, wow that has some disturbing imagery! I felt it lacked some of the heart the story had but the artwork was amazing and it wasn't bad overall. It's a long book so is hard to translate to a movie. HAVE YOU SEEN: The Phantom Tollbooth starring Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and featuring the voice of Mel Blanc?? The book is one of my all-time childhood favorites, the movie represents it pretty well, though I haven't seen it for years.

Inspired by your Seen It reviews of the films "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Her," I watched both. The Wolf of Wall Street was fun and I didn't get tired or bored of it through the three hour ordeal. Her... I have stronger opinions on that film though. First off, I want to note how extremely heavy it was. I numerously checked the run time on the film because I simply couldn't believe that it wasn't about to reach the end. It's a beautiful example of how filmography should be done, where it isn't just a huge mountain of rising drama all to plummet at the climax like the floom ride. It doesn't leave you in anticipation up until the last minute of excitement, just to leave you wishing you hadn't wasted all that time standing in line just to get wet and disappointed. Her was a beautiful story with depth and character throughout, and that impressed me. I have to say also, I disagree on how Her was 'secretly a horror movie.' I don't think it's a film about disconnectedness. I think it's actually one that celebrates companionship and socializing. I did however think of it as a very sincere cautionary tale. It seemed to me, a story not on how technology separates people, or particularly one about bringing them together, but more a clever kind of satire on the social network trends of this modern era. It seems to me to say a lot about how important it is to have friends, and Samantha herself allowed Theodore to become more social and enjoy time with friends, but also on the importance of choosing your friends and having the right friends. It's about having the right amount of friends, and lending yourself to them appropriately without spreading yourself so thin that you can't really dedicate yourself to your friends in any meaningful way. If anything, it's a horror story about being too friendly. Even with the not-a-prostitute surrogate date girl Isabella, the movie shows so strongly how important it is to not awkwardly get involved with people your honestly have nothing to do with just because you think it'd be good to do. Theodore was weirded out, and Isabella was deeply hurt by that. It seems to say how dangerous it can be to try and force your way into relationships, or to force relationships to work (as in the case of Amy and her husband) in ways they just can't work. The whole ending reenforces those ideas by proving the harm they do to the people involved. Samantha was getting too involved with others, and Theodore was unable to cope with what he learned to believe was an insignificant relationship. Theodore's life was miserable when he was antisocial, and social activity helped him be happy again, but as soon as it went overboard and the social networking at the non-existent-hands of Samantha went to far, it crushed him. That's my take on it anyway, and I loved it. Thanks for mentioning it!

I saw Rush, and it was a totally awesome movie. I don't like racing, I don't care about it, I knew nothing about those people, and it still made me care about those people and racing as a whole. It was just all around a great movie, and according to Niki Lauda it was spot on to what actually happened which si a great thing to know about a movie based on true events.

I think Her also has a lot to say about expectations of relationships. Phoenix's character views everyday women with flaws and idiosyncrasies as abnormal and impossible to deal with. He falls in love with the AI because she's flawless and tailor-made to fulfill his every want and need. He can't deal with the compromising and push-and-pull of a normal human connection. He can only fulfill it with a relationship that is perfect

Hey Guys, really love the show. You should watch the British apocalypse movie 'Threads'. It is the most disturbing movie I have ever seen but also, strangely, one of my favourites. With only a small budget the film creates a gritty and terrifying vision of a nuclear apocalypse combined with an unknown cast of actors who, pun intended, blew me away. Well worth a watch, but be warned it will haunt your dreams for many many moons.

Couldn't agree more about Hanks. He has been largely disappointing in the last decade, but his performance in this film was massive. That last scene where he is being checked out by the medical team, I think was probably one of the best performed scenes (at least top ten) in a long time, because like you mentioned, even though he is a giant film star, he managed to morph into someone who had genuinely been in a traumatic experience. Gold.

*I* saw Rush and I was surprised by the snub as well. Formula One movies (and racing movies in general) tend to get a bad rap for their reliance on car porn shots (i.e. "Grand Prix" and "Le Mans"). This one, though, was focused on Niki Lauda, James Hunt, and the '76 season in general (and rightly so); the cars weren't glamorized at all. Even my father, who's not a racing fan at all, loved it! I guess it was doomed right from the start box-office-wise, regardless of what it was about...

Hey guys, really liked the episode. I wanted to hear your opinions on something. I just saw Memento in its entirety for the first time. I enjoyed it immensely, but it garnered a bit of criticism for being shallow and making a non-meaningful story rely on one "gimmick". I love the movie and wouldn't be so harsh, but I can see why one might complain. This got me to thinking about a certain issue of fiction. Which matters more when you see a movie: the meaning and gravity of the story or how well the story is told? How do you weight lasting impact against moment to moment engagement? What are you guys looking for when you see a movie for the first time? Would LOVE to hear your thoughts.

This is one of those movies, that if you read the book first you will spend too much time thinking about the differences. If you read the book, almost all the main characters are horrible selfish vengeful people. In the end, the only happy ending came from the result of these selfish people's actions....but the main characters were all dead before that. I can't say I liked the book, because like I said, most of the character were not nice people, it's hard to sympathize with someone if you really wish a boulder would fall on them.

Gravity may look awesome and is emotional, but its no different from other fantasy movies out there since the physics and the principles in the movie are either fake, unreal or highly unlikely to ever occur since astronauts in real life dont behave anything like they did in the movie.

I loved the episode today but I loathed American Hustle. Not only did I dislike Jennifer Lawrence's character (which in some way made me dislike the film) it was just so jaded and unbelievable that I couldn't get in to it. It didn't immerse me at all...

Matt! How dare you not want Smaug to win Visual Effects! Smaug's the best CGI character since Gollum! Gravity is a piece of CGI shit, just like Avatar. No substance, or anything that we haven't seen before. Smaug is like nothing I've ever seen before.
