    As for actual decisions that seem final, the one I take most issue with is probably tying gold rewards to turn count. I get that it's trying to make turn count matter somehow, but I feel it hurts lower-skilled players that need more time to complete maps by giving less resources to the player long-term. I didn't think of the percentage modifiers being unintuitive but I do think they're often insignificant. A 20% bonus to defense is usually 1 or 2 points, so why not just provide a small flat bonus instead of a percentage?
    Also, the -Dex debuff for dying is called "Missing Finger" which makes it tempting to try and get someone killed 11 times by the correct weapon type

    • @DoggyP00

      Most games have systems that reward players for playing beyond what's required of them so I wouldn't say that is a unique issue and is more about how it is balanced than that it exists. I do in fact want to be rewarded for rushing in a taking risks I really shouldn't be, but not so much where I feel like I need to take those risks.
      As for %modifiers, I think he's more referring to the armor types, who's 20% damage difference usually involves far larger differences in damage than the flat numbers suggest. My 6x2 might turn into 20x2 depending on what type of armor they are wearing even with similar defense stats. Combine that with high crit rates and a much larger diversity of damage, I never have moments where I can safely know that my unit will survive with 1 hp with just a few glances.

      How to reward players is a really tough design problem. If you reward good play, then you risk either trivializing the later game for better players or under-preparing the worse players, which seems kind of backwards. If you instead reward bad play (catchup mechanics), then you risk better players handicapping themselves to get rewards. If you just don't reward players based on skill, then you risk good play not feeling satisfying or worth it.
      To compare with Fire Emblem, while they (usually) aren't directly tied to turn count, there are often many great rewards that are tied to playing better or more quickly. Thieves will steal the good treasure and run, brigands will burn down the villages, etc. Worse players will end up with less good weapons, less money for supplies, less promotion items, basically worse off in every way. It is certainly one of the contributing factors to earlier FE games being less beginner-friendly, and while modern games have added grinding to alleviate the issue, it's more of a band-aid than a real fix.

    my main issue is really just a nitpick but the OST just,,,, doesn't do anything for me? idk, maybe i've been spoiled by fire emblem but none of the music in dark deity really stands out to me, and it makes the strategic gameplay feel all the more monotonous with the generic background music looping over and over

    The game was super rough on launch, it really should have had a few more weeks of dev, maybe with more rigorous testing. That being said the devs seem to really care, and the patches they've put out so far have already fixed a lot of my most major problems with the game.
    I think in like a week's time when they've polished everything up nicely, it'll definitely be a game worth recommending. Its just a shame it launched how it did.

    • @alxjones
      @alxjones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean, it's an indie game, and I believe the first game from this studio. I doubt they could have really afforded the kind of large-scale playtesting that would be required to have a perfect launch. This is a situation where I think it's reasonable for early adopters to double as beta testers; as long as the devs are diligent about listening to feedback and implementing fixes and changes, the game will likely be in good shape very soon.

    • @halowaffle25
      @halowaffle25 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alxjones You know, I agree with you to an extent, but it can't be understated just HOW ROUGH things were on launch. It was as if it was pushed out the door with no playtesting whatsoever. Which is strange, considering just how damn dedicated the team's single programmer has been since release.
      If you want my *conspiracy theory*, the publisher rushed the game out the door to capitalize on the post E3 market. And apparently it worked, because the game seems to have sold pretty well.

    • @alxjones
      @alxjones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@halowaffle25 To me, it doesn't play like a game with no playtesting, it plays like a game with *dev* playtesting. When developers test their own game, they tend to be blind to a lot of issues. Missing tutorials and poor UI/UX are the hallmarks of this kind of testing, and were some of the worst issues I saw.
      On the other hand, your theory is a very popular one because it makes a lot of sense. I can't say for sure one way or the other, it could even be both. All I know is that I feel it's okay to be a bit more forgiving of a rough launch for a tiny indie dev's first game than we otherwise might be. Doubly so *because* we're seeing how much they're listening to the players and working hard to fix things as they come up.

      This were my years of experience come in handy. I'm a professional software tester (both manual and automated testing) and I can confirm many things that have been said here
      1. This game does seem dev tested. The reason big companies hire external specialized testing teams is to increase the coverage of edge cases that developers often ignore.
      2. Testing is expensive. In fact is a lot more expensive than people think sometimes it even costs more than the development (talking in general about software, not limited to games) so I can understand how a small studio would be unable to hire a testing team
      3. More week at in-house testing would have benn useless, developers most likely tested the same areas over and over again and as such fell in to the pesticide paradox (one of The principles of testing) wich means that the software developed "resistance" to their tested because they kept running the same test and each time they found less and less bugs. Feeling that the game was ready for release
      4. This is not testing related but I really liked this game even more after analyzing it this way, working for a big company makes you realize how much money can do to solve your business problems and ensure "customers satisfaction" even if your product has no soul. Seeing small dev teams struggling to get this amazing project is amazing and I will fully support them. Also there's a bond between two characters where they talk about micro-transactions and they just won me over with that

    The game is super rough right now even beyond the things Bopper mentioned there are also issues with skills not working correctly or at all and weird discrepancies between displayed hit/avoid/damage values and the actual calculations (for example 100% misses).
    That being said as someone who is up to chapter 15 on hard the game is quite interesting and fun. The devs put in a good amount of effort in making each chapter different from the last in both design, objective, and enemy composition and it definitely makes the wide range of classes stand out more. Personally I'd recommend waiting for the game to receive a patch to at least fix the things that are outright broken and hopefully also make some qol changes.

      i wonder if the game is that hard on the deity difficulty , what do you think ?
      Also i find it hard to understand what class do , especialy when you don't have the class in question. When you click on a enemy unit, you have all of these stat but you don''t see any of their passive , so it's hard to see what they are doing in particular other than their stat and weapons .It's like they really have no passive , i don't understand , i'm kinda lost to this point . What the point of having enemy classes if they are just skin and nothing else but armor/weapon type ?

  • @d3-ll754

    Regarding the whole Advantage System: I agree wholeheartedly on this, it's just a mess of numbers and equations that only serve to make the whole experience more confusing. I believe an SRPG's equations should be simple to understand and would preferably shy away from things like "this Unit deals 35% more damage to Chain armor but 10% less damage to Leather armor".
    That said, one thing I'm thankful for is just how easy it is to ignore these if you're smart with your Promotion options and weapon Upgrades. A 20% damage reduction doesn't stop my Witch Hunter Garrick from damn near one-shotting several enemies with a Tier 4 War Bow, which I got as early as Ch 13 (there are 28 chapters total, as I understand it).
    Of course, that's only a single example regarding a Unit that's already recognized as super strong, but my point is that I don't think the Advantage system should deter you, as you can pretty easily just ignore it altogether. It's only there to reward the players who choose to run the numbers to that degree.

    I think permanent injury compared to permadeath is equally as thematically realistic but doesn't urge for a reset when you get 2% crit by a random enemy. To be honest, I think getting crit and then using that unit with a chip on their shoulder sounds way better for personal attachment than losing and forgetting them as you continue with the game.

    Main thing that bugs me is the way the promotion happens. Specifically that when you reach the level you don’t see the character’s stats until after.
    I don’t have a problem with the gold reward for turn count. I’m only at chapter 7 but so far it seems like just killing enemies gives plenty.
    I wish I knew I could just rush the boss for the inn chapter.
    Edit: turns out the promotion issue was patched yesterday. 👍

    The gold bonus for completing chapters faster makes sense to me in that, each chapter you get some gold at the end from defeated enemies, looting the area, etc., and if you take longer to finish the battle, the more it costs you in upkeep for your army and whatnot. So the reward at the end is what you gained minus upkeep costs, which is lower if you end battles quicker. I know it's never explained this way in game, but I've played other games where they have a similar mechanic explained that way, and it's what immediately came to mind when I saw that popup in chapter 4.

      I just checked it on Steam, and it looks like a straight rip off, the entire style just imitated, the combat, and even the goddamn animations.
      It's so depressing that even indie creators would just rip off other indie creators this much.
      You could so easily make a very similar game to Darkest Dungeon that feels like a love letter, instead of such a blatant copy you'd expect to see on the Google Play store.
      You literally don't have to imitate the style of DD, it's clearly not necessary for the game to work and they had their own good ideas, so either the artist or someone else just said "Yeah, make it identical to Darkest Dungeon".

Feels like there would be none if they truly set out to copy all the important things and then just make the more minor things themselves like the numbers of moves and equipment. However, you aren't wrong on indie games, they can copy each other to the point of plagiarism because there usually isn't much to stop them other than the people and fans, which is not a lot for most indie games, only the popular ones.

    I have finished this game recently, and game starts cracking near the end. Devs definitely rushed this game to release prior to E3, and it is not just technical problems. Map design is questionable, some classes are just way ahead of others(My Bianca could solo entire maps in a late game because the had self-healing in tier 2 class, and got 1-2 range in tier 3 class, this is awakening nosferatu-tank level definition of broken). Some realy strange desicions like 2-3 range archers being useless because for whatever reason 2 range enemies can counter you on a 3 range, armor based effectivnes are not intuitive(like why spear fighters arent effective against mounted enemies?), disarm assist is misleading and almost useless, global trade system which is realy dumb. Maybe on a Deity mode this game can provide proper challenge, but i will not touch this game until devs will fix this game core problems.
