  • Dr. Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and has been in recovery from opioid use himself since 1984, discusses whether it's safe to detox cold turkey off of opiates. Fear of opioid withdrawal symptoms sometimes stops people from seeking treatment for Opioid Use Disorder.
    -Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 14 cities across the US.
    -3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA, Wellesley, MA (Boston area) and Willoughby, OH (Cleveland area) includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Rapid Benzodiazepine Detox.
    -Caring, Empathetic Environment
Dr. Peter Coleman understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

I did it! I wasn't aware there was a detox period. I was wondering why I was so tired, leg shaking and on the tolit all day. Then three days later it was over. Don't overthink this, you are gonna make it give it a week and move on.

Remember Keep pressing! Don't stop moving ( that will help with the shakes). Stay out in public, give your brain something to think about. And 4 HOT showers a day.

I'm on day 3 of a codeine withdrawl.. I was taking 25 30mg daily. But my Mrs has said after 8 years it's her or give up. I'm in severe pain diarrhea is horrendous. I'm as weak as a kitten and sweat pissing out of me. But no going back now. I'm doing this to save my marriage. I'm 51 by the way and higher management in my work. So I need these side effects to subside by Monday. Please say I'm at the peak.

@manchester1972 yes you are at the peak. You should have windows of feeling normal tomorrow. Monday they'll be a bit longer until by Wednesday you'll be over them from a physical perspective. It's the mental aspect that says you'll feel better if you give in..stay strong even after this week of hell.
The pain never seems to subside, other than what help ibuprofen can provide. Every pain that's been masked will come crashing in. But the awful withdrawals should start to ease a little by tomorrow.
The insomnia is the worst part for me.

My brother was put in prison amidst his worst drug binge periods and he had to go through complete cold turkey withdrawals of morphine, Suboxone, Benzo's and all kinds of other drugs with nothing to help him, in a cell all day. Thankfully we're in Iceland not America so it's not as horrible as American prisons but he stayed in withdrawals for a few months with the first month being the absolute worst and of course the Suboxone and Benzo withdrawals are the worst of all! I've gone through opioids withdrawals many times and there's of course no worse withdrawals in this world then Suboxone (except maybe the horrible anxiety and panic attacks you get from Benzo's, that's pretty close) I hate Suboxone with a passion and I hate that I was ever put on it in my 2017 rehab and still being stuck on it. Disgusting drug. It might help some people but it's done nothing for me but create a skin disease that's uncurable and cause me just misery and pain with all of its awful side effects. Not great quality of life I gotta say.

@@NikiReynolds_2swift complete lack of sleep after the second day for about 4 days straight and then maybe an hour or two for another 4days can't focus on anything, extreme anxiety and sweating at the same time. Can also get like I did restless legs syndrome which sucks. Headache on going for days. Very dry mouth that your tongue keeps pushing your upper lips up for some reason, feeling very mean and foul mood. God forbid anyone is around you. Because you will probably say things you can't take back later on. Suicidal thoughts. Total lack of interest in life which is normal in today's world. Irritating ability when laying down to tossing and turning trying to sleep and keep getting up and laying down over and over again after the first 24 hours. And that is the key. Most people think after the first 24 hours is the worse. But actually No. It's just draining from your system after 24 hours. So you will get a Big Crash and burn feeling. Good luck. And giving you cigarettes and vaping is actually easier and acholic beverages a little harder yet. But I've got to put opioids abuse as #1. But after I'll say 2 weeks it starts to get better. Depends on how long you've been doing it. Myself was many years!

Day 3 for me cold turkey I relapsed a couple months ago but managed to not use daily, I’d say 3 days a week so I’m managing okay but I’ve never had diarrhea this bad in my life and at first I had thought that I wasn’t addicted and that I had a stomach flu or food poisoning.

I was on day 3 an someone stopped by an smoked wit me. Probably a total of 2 pills is what i had an im back to day 2 an its just as bad as it was a few days ago. So there is no making it easier when it comes to cold turkey. Ive been at it for a solid month now barely smoking any an constantly going a day here 2 days there without smokijg an the detox process is still horrible. You need a solid 5 or 6 days before you will notice it slowly get better. Maybe some will notice after 4 or 5 days. But just know 32 hours to 72 hours after last use is the peak of the withdrawl

Just go to their channel and put benzodiazepines in the search bar. They've talked a little about that drug. I struggle with massive anxiety and panic attack disorder and I stupidly started using Benzo's because I don't want to be put on any of those SSRI drugs or that shit to deal with my anxiety but withdrawals from Benzo's are horrific! And they last for weeks and even months! You can get detoxed off them but I would NOT do it cold turkey!

Mama Bear I don't think there is a "detox" period.Their telling me it will take years to go from 1/2mg Xanax to nothing. I've been on that dose for 20 yrs. Longest I've went was 72 hrs. Thought I was gonna die, no sleep or eating. Scored some off the street and in 15 min I was fine.

I want to know how the elderly get off Methadone treatment with chronic illnesses? I looked and could not find treatment for the elderly. My peers are all like me. What do we do, as a group? My "treatment" center counselors believe placing 60 plus yr olds with 18 and up for talk group therapy works, but only for the young ones also. This issue must be addressed as well as payment for treatment while on Medicare. It is a huge problem for those who are alone and on a fixed income! More and more elderly are alcoholics and addicts are coming out to the forefront. Why are we always tossed away like we are nothing after a certain age? I have lost many friends too young due to related issues like this. Some of us are giving in to the idea that we are stuck and will die in treatment. Drs are getting so paranoid they undertreat people. I knew a woman who lost both legs and had to use Ibuprofen. Same for dental pain and they don't cover dental or eyeglasses too. Methadone eats teeth so guess what!? I read the other comments and I am happy others have been successful. Just hoping for answers. There is a lot I am not saying.
