The newspaper note about Coria reads the following (more or less):
"Mr. Valentin Fernandez Coria, with family ties to our neighbour of the same name, obtained the 1st place on the chess championship held on the "Circulo de Ajedrez" ("Chess Ring" or literally "Chess Circle", but the correct expression in English is the first one)
Therefore, Mr. Fernandez Coria now obtained the title of "Champion of the Chess Ring".
Berlin's Chess Club had made a statement, in which considers that the result of the chess tournament Lasker-Capablanca, performed in La Habana, was not showing the true measure of the player's strenghts, and Lasker was in inferiority of conditions due to the weather.
They add this tournament should be repeated, under more favourable conditions, and they point Germany as a place for it to be held."

    • @nicolashrv
      @nicolashrv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

The other notes are about other tournaments being held the year before, about some other players, and not much info. They talk about the acceptance of the last years prizes, but they dont even say who won, the note just talks about who was in 2nd place because he was neighbour of that town.

Mr Valentin Fernandez Coria, connected by blood relationship to our neighbour who shares the same surname, has triumphed in the chess championship that took place in the chess club.
Mr Fernandez Coria was crowned "Champion of the chess club".
The Berlin chess club has declared that it considered the results from the "universal chess championship", Lasker-Capablanca, that took place in La Havana, wasn't fit to judge the players as Lasker felt weaker due to the climate.
They added that they wished for a renewal of the tourney in more favorable conditions and suggest it takes place in Germany.

One of the articles mention that Lasker was sick due the climate in Havana. And the match should be play again and they recomend be play in Germany. Also mention that the level of play wasn't the best. As you can see Capa gets sick in Europe He is a tropical bird. Lasker is a child of the thundra. In the heat of havana he is not going to fare well. Well it's time for the main course. Capa against the best players of his time. Thanks again to Antonio for his Great blog.

One seems to be a local paper:
Sir Valentin Fernandez Coria, linked by family ties to our neighbor of the same name, has triumphed in the chess championship disputed in the Chess Circle. Thus Fernandez Coria has won the title "Champion of the Chess Circle."
This seems to be a future accomplishment from the time of this match because right below it reads (I hope this won't be a spoiler for anyone):
The Berlin Chess Club has declared that it considers the result of the match Capablanca-Lasker for the universal chess title in Havana did not reflect the real strength of the players and caused Lasker to remain inferior due to the climate. The club would like a repetition of the match in Germany in more favorable climate.

I revised the link and I found interesting information to share about Mr. Coria and the Lasker-Capablanca match: Chess notes (Notas de Ajedrez in Spanish): Mr. Valentin Fernandez Coria relative of our neighbor with the same last name, he has obtained the victory in the chess circle championship. Consequently, Mr. Fernandez Coria has been declared "Champion of the chess circle".
    - The Berlin chess club made a statement in which it considers that the result of the universal world chess championship, Lasker-Capablanca which took place in Havana did not consider the strength of the players, thus Lasker was playing in inferior conditions due to the weather. It was also mentioned that the club wishes a repetition of the tournament in more favorable conditions and also indicates that the event should take place in Germany.

Translation for the text about Fernández Coria in the description:
    Chess notes*
Mr. Valentín Fernández Coria, linked by familiy ties to our close one of the same name, has won the chess championship celebrated in the Chess Ring (Probably the Chivilcoy Chess Ring).
Consequently, Mr. Fernández Coria has been awarded the title of "Chess Ring Champion".
The Berlin Chess Club has released a statement in which this club considers the result of the chess tournament for the World Chess Championship, Lasker-Capablanca, celebrated in La Habana, Cuba, to not provide an accurrate measure of the players' true strengths, seeing as Lasker was on inferior conditions because of the weather.
The statement adds that the club requests for the repetition of the tournament in more favorable conditions and suggests it's realization in Germany.

Hey Agadmator, so Don Valentin Fernandez Coria was one of the founders of the city of Chivilcoy [1], were once Valentín Fernández Coria won a tournament on 1921. According to that newspaper note they were related. About Valentin Fernandez Coria (the chess player of course) he played representing Argentina on the first unofficial Chess Olympiad [2]. Born in 1896 and died in 1955 [3] he played and was vicepresident of the Círculo de Ajedrez de Buenos Aires [3][4]. Circulo was very important in the creation of the first argentinian national chess championship in 1921 and the first champion Damian Reca was also part of Circulo.

    Chess matches
Last night, many interesting chess games were played once again.
Ms. Ovidio Barrancos got various results with our main aficionados, and the matches against José Calabria and later against Ms. Emilio Alferez.
    01/25/1921
    A chess match
It seems like, between chess fans / aficionados that are part of the Club Social [Social Club], there's the intent to send a challenge to the Club Argentino de Ajedrez de Capital Federal [Capital Federal (Another name for Buenos Aires) Argentinian Chess Club], to hold a match in this city, between the aficionados of the Club Social and those of second category from that Club.
Were this test to be made, it would lead to some chess sessions that would be quite an event for our city and it would greatly encourage the enthusiasm and interest in this intelligence sport, which already has so many addicts in Chivilcoy.
The team of players from Club Social would be composed, were this match to take place, by the gentlemen José Calabria, Emilio Alferez, Iram Tomadin, Silvano Fernández, Dr. Joaquín Laguirat and another Mr.
    EL TRIBUNO, 04/27/1921
    Chess News-
On last Sunday, in the Club Argentino de Ajedrez, the prices of the tourneys held in 1920 were given.
As it's already known, the second price of the second category was given to Mr. Ovidio M. Barrancos, who received a silver coup, donation from the house Saint Hnos. [Saint Brothers].
-In the interest of offering the aficionados some interesting information, we will publish in our next number the moves of many matches held between a local player and two players from Mercedes, one of who is the champion from Mercedes, Dr. Campo. The names were not mentioned by their request.
We will add that we could count with a visit from Dr. Campi.
    - It's not unlikely that a formal challenge from the Mercedes chess community is made to the chess community of the Club Social. It appears that they have been making big progress and they count with elements that they assure are to make a tight and interesting match, considering the strength of the locals.
    EL TRIBUNO, 05/04/1921
    Chess News
The preliminars for the next local chess tournament are being organized, which will be played soon.
There's interest to check if the positions from last year are held.
    05/29/1921
    Chess trivia/things-
We were mentioning that chess could fill uss with anecdotes. Let's see:
The president of the Club is having a match with Atilio Grosso. The match is tight, and the first has been winning.
    - If you would move that knight... someone says to Grosso.
    - No one touches this knight, he responds.
    José María wins. And says:
    - Did you see? It's been forever since the comisary's Knight wins!
The gathering, as well as the princess Eulalia, laughs, laughs, laughs..
    -
Celaya and Urquiza play another match. Urquiza defense his king vigorously, and Dr. Báncora can be heard:
    - Do you know what's the limit of a socialist? [This is a local expression that starts a joke, it's hard to translate but it's meant to be followed with some sort of ironic punchline]
    - Which one? Tiscornia asks.
    - Defend his king by sword and cape. [To be fair, the original joke is pretty funny]
    Dr. Báncora scores a point.
[Here's the one you've asked for]
    1921/06/02
    Chess notes-
Mister Valentín Fernández Coria, linked by family ties to our neighbour with the same last name, has gotten a triumph in the chess tournament that was being held in the Círculo de Ajedrez [Chess Circle].
In return, Ms. Fernández Coria has obtained the title of "Campeón del Círculo de Ajedrez" [Chess Circle Champion].
    - The Berlin Chess Club has made a statement by which this very club considers the result of the chess tournament for the universal championship, Lasker-Capablanca, held in La Habana, didn't measure the actual strength of the players, for which Lasker was in an inferior condition due to the weather.
It's added that the club wishes for the repetition of the tournament in more favourable conditions, and it's indicated to be carried out in Germany.
Well, the rest are more trivia notes like those above. I hope it's helpful. Thank for all of the vast knowledge you've given me these years, and I hope this community keeps expanding. :) Greetings from Buenos Aires! Btw we love brewed beer here as well :D

Mr. Coria has won the Chess Club Championship. As such, he retained his title of champion of the club.
The Berlin Chess Club has said that they do not consider the result of the match Capablanca vs. Lasker for the title of World Champion, which took place in Havana (Cuba) to be valid, as the hot climate put Mr. Lasker at a disadvantage. I found the official statistics on chess matches for Don Fernández Coria:
    Results: Victories: 32% (16) Defeats: 50% (25) Draws: 18% (9) Total:50
    Results for White pieces: Victories: 30.4% (7) Defeats: 39.1% (9) Draws: 30.4% (7) Total:23
    Results for Black pieces: Victories: 33.3% (9) Defeats: 59.3% (16) Draws: 7.4% (2) Total:27
    Active: from 1915 to 1933
Here's the link to the web source (in Spanish): es.chesstempo.com/gamedb/player/239492
Also found a quote in the 3rd part of a chess book collection by Roberto G. Grau, which says the following:
'Let's examine a variant of the Orthodox Defense [...] we'll use a game that Valentín Fernández Coria won against Rolando Illa in the Mayor Tournament from 1924. Here are the first 16 moves of the match:
    1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e3 c6 6. Nf3 O-O 7. Ne5 Nfd7 8. Bxe7 Qxe7 9. Nxd7 Nxd7 10. Bd3 dxc4 11. Bxc4 N b6 12. Bd3 e5 13. dxe5 Qxe5 14. O-O Be6 15. Qe2 Rfe8 16. f4 Qf6'
Hope you find it interesting. Best regards :)

Assuming Spanish naming conventions, I think you would usually call this guy Señor Fernández, rather than by his second (maternal) surname.

Translation of Poem (Cosas del Ajedrez)
    Things of chess
    We said that chess could
enrich the local stock of anecdotes.
    Let’s see:
A match is taking place between doctor Moras,
the club’s president, and Atilio Grosso. The match was hard fought
and the fist one is winning.
    - If you move that horse… (A restrain gentlemen tells Grosso).
    - That horse doesn’t belong to anyone. (Grosso says).
Jose Maria wins. And says, in a way to comment:
    - Have you realized? If the times in which the horse
won against the commissaire have past!
The assembly and the princess Eulalia, laugh, laugh, laugh…
Celaya and Urquiza play another match. Urquiza defends the king with endeavor and you can hear Dr. Báncora:
    - Who knows what is the peak of absurdity of a socialist is?
    - What is? (asks Tiscornia.)
    - To defend by sword and cape his king.
The Doctor Báncara is up for a poroto (drink).

Please allow me to correct you - Its supposed to be Mr Fernandez - Coria is the mother's last name - Fernandez is the father's last name and that is the one to be used first or a combination of both - but not Coria alone - thank you

His name is not mr. Coria is Mr. Fernandez. Coria is his mother's maiden name . In Spanish you either use Fernandez or you use the two last names Fernandez Coria.

If books where "Capa is commenting his own old games after years" have been written after his death, I have huge doubts on the reality of the Capa comments. But maybe I'm wrong, and he participed to the writting on these books about his career. Nice tournament tonight, but chess is really too much stressing

      1. E5 "And from that move we have a completely new game on the board" :)
We always laugh with a collegue when one says sth like "so you have white and you start" just as this dont need to be added but years ago players choose who starts the game. There is only the notation's, nickname bishop, queens-, rook, knight bishop namings but pgn notation can cope with it easily.
