Lee Load Master Auto Index Problem

  • The index lever does not ride the ribs and nubs on my press like its supposed to. The lever will sometimes ride the rib but not all the way out. Because of that the shell plate will not index when the lever is raised to the top. Any ideas?

Your issue is resolved by adjusting the carrier. There is a 7/16" nut on the bottom of the ram. Loosen that until you can rotate the entire carrier assembly. In your case you would rotate the carrier clockwise a tad to make the index flapper fit more snuggerer against the ridge on the press.

Check the index flipper and make sure there is zero clearance between it and the frame on the way up. If there is a gap loosen the ram bolt on the very bottom of the ram and rotate the ram until there is zero clearance. Also check that none of the dies are down too far. If the dies stop the upward motion of the shell plate before the assembley is at the full up position, the flipper will not fully contact the small nub that turns the flipper clockwise so it can engage the frame on the downstroke

In addition to checking the carrier adjustment (7/16 nut on the bottom of the ram) you have to keep the press greased. If you don't keep the grease levels full, as the grease level drops you get "lateral" (left/right) play in the handle and the flapper can move away from the pullout rib very easily. This will move the carrier left and right also.
When the grease level is low, if you move the handle to the right during your stroke it will not index. If you move the handle left during the stroke it will index. When the grease level is full, there is no lateral movement. The linkage will be very tight and the carrier will not move left or right when you pull the handle.

Thanks for the tips everyone however after MANY attempts to adjust the plate at the bottom I never got this thing to work reliably. I returned it to Midway for a complete refund. They paid for shipping back to them. Thumbs up for Midway.

it seems that this press needs to have about 100 rounds or so through it before things work smoothly, however even at 500 rounds, my press "same model" still has a few issues here and there. (bullet feeder dropping bullets and being crushed in the seating die, primer feeder not fully feeding a primer and it becomes crushed and wont index) most of my issues revolve around the bullet feeder and the occasional case feeder not feeding all the way.

Theirs a bolt at the bottom of the ram losen that and turn the shell plate holder a little bit to the left and tighten it down

My new press came with a spare. Maybe yours is defective?

It look like to me you had the indexing rod in wrong the beveled part of the indexing rode is suppose to face down.

Nope, see illustration "C" page 9 of the instructions. "install indexer with longer portion of flipper pointing upward and bevel side of indexer to your right. " Right and left from perspective of operator's seat.

I had same problem. Easy fix. Loosen the draw bolt at the bottom of the ram. Rotate the ram to the left until the indexing rod rides closer to the frame and catches the "ramp" on the way down. Tighten the draw bolt back up. There is no need to modify your Loadmaster as this is a common adjustment.

I also had the same symptoms happen when my turret became loose and rotated a bit to the left. There is a bit of "slop" in the turret before you clamp it down with the tightener screw. I rotated the turret to the right and it corrected the problem that time as well.

it's a bummer that you sent this back. The adjustment to fix this problem takes about 30 seconds. :/ The owners manual tells you how to align the turret.

How I fixed that problem........On the rib where the lever is SUPPOSED to ride.I took a piece of thin metal and cut it so it laid flat and stuck out aprox.1/16" and glued it down with a little silicon. Now the rod has a crisp area to slide on.........Problem Fixed !

Search youtube for loadmaster index. It literally only takes about 30 seconds to loosen the bolt on the bottom of the ram to make the adjustment and then retighten it.

The peoblem is actual the sqaure rod if the edge is worn ie not sqaure it will create slop witch will make it fall off toward the end of the stroke

Much thanks for the replies, I had the same problem today and the responses pointed me to the 7/16 nut. Easy fix, sorry you had to send it back and it was very frustrating until I adjusted the carriage nut!! Thanks.

I'm having this same problem... and yes I re-aligned the carrier, yes I lubed the index rod & pull out rib. All of my shooting friends told me not to buy a Lee press, and I did it anyways. Wow that was stupid.

@44stevenson thank you but the problems came back and after trying many times to get this thing to work I gave up. I even tried to call Lee directly but I kept getting a busy signal. I packed everything back into the box and shipped it back to Midway for a refund.

I have the same problem, however, I've learned that my flipper is rotating on the bar and twists it out of alignment. I don't see any fix for that... :(

I had this same problem and spent tons of time with lee through email trying to solve the problem. The solution for me after checking everything was to lube the indexer rod and the rib on the frame, and now it's works perfect, don't know why lee never told me to do this.
