    as a lesbian, sadly most movies have a sad ending but i think carol is more positive then negative since they do end up together and no one dies. the bar is low for lesbian movies

      While it's true most do, that's because they are unfortunately inspired by real people and historically, the world hasn't been great to LGBT people. I think queer cinema will get more and more positive over time, but I don't think it's bad that a lot of them have sad endings in general

      @@dfkfgjfg why is it not bad that most lesbian films end sadly? yes finally there are more coming out that have happier endings but just bc we have had to deal with so few lesbian movies doesn't mean it's acceptable they set it up for kids and young lesbians to see themselves being killed, not being loved, having tragedy strike them, be abused

    • @dfkfgjfg
      @dfkfgjfg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@veeiris while I totally understand what you're getting at from an influence perspective in real life, I meant more from an artist lense. As in I don't mind (and even somewhat prefer) tragic art so I think there's some good to it. But I definitely agree that it is not great from an influence perspective. Just a few years ago, a lesbian growing up wouldn't even see almost any character to relate with altogether, so it is a shame that even now, you'll only get to see something pessimistic. I have hope things will get better very quickly because there is a clearly a strong market for LGBT films (especially lesbian films) and the last 10 years shows that. Also another side note is that romance as a genre is disproportionately tragic especially when it's more serious films, and usually it's the more serious films that try to tackle LGBT themes.

    'The Handmaiden' was the contender the award shows in the USA thought Korea would pick because it was what everyone was talking about. But then, they chose Gong Yoo's 'Age of Shadows' movie to put in the academy awards running and it was never picked up. Such a missed opportunity.

    • @dfkfgjfg

      While it's definitely true they messed up by putting Age of Shadows as the contender, I don't think that takes away from Age of Shadows also being an excellent film. I much prefer The Handmaiden however and was really happy it won at the BAFTAs. BAFTAs is much better than the Oscars anyway.

      @@user-ru3zw6lz9h A separate board for each country (run by each country) selects something to be sent in (it has to meet the criteria for Oscars). Something around 200 films get sent in. The Oscars picks 10 (?) out of each selection from every eligible country in the world. So Korea won't have a film every year that makes it to the competing stage. Korea is actually notoriously snubbed regularly at the Oscars and often doesn't make it to the last 10 (partly due to the Korean board being notoriously terrible at selecting their own films)

      Jennifer's BOdy is not a 'lesbian movie' at all, it's a horror movie about a toxic female friendship that in that scene crosses the boundary into almost-a-sex-scene to communicate the idea that this toxic friendship threatened to absorb the protagonist completely and she'd never escape or be separate from her toxic friend (who is a monster that devours people literally and in this case, emotionally). The resolution of the movie is her killing the friend/monster ie. ending the toxic relationship and being free. There's literally nothing in the movie suggesting you think of either character as something other than hetero - if you could call the megan fox character that, she's lit. a succubus ie. a demonic interpretation of female sexuality that destroys all she touches

    • @starofdabloc
      @starofdabloc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@helvete_ingres4717 uhhh yes it is it’s implied that Jennifer was a in the closet lesbian in love with her best friend and ALSO in a toxic friendship with her. Especially at the end when she attacks her and she says I thought you only went after boys and Jennifer says I go both ways. It’s played like jokes but why have it in there if it wasn’t SOMETHING lol I don’t know what friendship has two people kissing that passionately on a bed like that and it’s implied that they do it all throughout growing up. If she wanted to kill “people” why did she never go after women?😂😂

    I feel like American movies can HAVE those light-hearted lesbian moments on screen because people are more accepting of LGBT relationships, but in Korea if they showed people being happy while being lesbians and not in a realistic movie, people might think the characters were insane. There's a Lot of murd3rs in America against lesbians, i think people see Asians as closed minded but they're really trying to change media for the better, there's american movies that shows LGBT as a joke, or the narrative that Will always be a sad ending, they're having lesbian couples characters but they're low key showing it as a dangerous idea or just as entertaiment

    • @neptune2266
      @neptune2266 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @darlene you’re right. i like sex scenes because they represent intimacy and connection between the love interests, but producers really overdo it sometimes and it starts to feel like lesbian porn made for men rather than a movie about a lesbian love story.

      @sgtmian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @ddovely🌷 what i like about korean dramas and movies, especially dramas, is the emotional connection gets more space because things aren't so sexualized. i'm not opposed to sex in shows and movies, but i feel like american shows put sex scenes in where it isn't needed and often it doesn't feel genuine. honestly one of my favorite lesbian sex scenes is in a korean movie, our love story, because it feels real and it doesn't take away from the emotional aspect the movie is portraying.

    I'm halfway through this video and can already tell that American Lesbian movies are more physical and Korean movies are more about dialog...So as I continue on with this commentary; the segment, "Jennifer's Body"; I don't think it's being presented within the context of the movie. There needs to be some pre-story before that scene. And finally, the two amazing ladies chose, "Moonlit Winter", I think, because of the beautiful dialogue.
