This whole concert is worth taking in. Joni had a band behind her of jazz fusion studio all stars. Pat Metheny on guitar, Jaco Pastorius on bass, Lyle Mays on keys. Amazing piece of art.

There is no one greater than Joni Mitchell. As for her guitar playing, she made up her own tunings so that she could play with her left hand, which was weakened by polio. She really is an innovative giant.

Suzi, this isn't a historical ballad about Amelia Earhart at all, she names checks her throughout but there is only one verse that deals specifically with Amelia and her disappearance. The other six verses are describing a very personal relationship gone wrong, and Travis at least acknowledges Joni is just making a connection, it's only in a metaphorical way, likening herself and Amelia's situation to something that had huge aspirations yet sadly vanished. Joni is pondering her life, looking out of a jet plane, traveling the world probably touring, heartbroken and having an imaginary heart to heart, confiding with the late aviation hero that this latest relationship wasn't to be the love of Joni's life after all, it was 'just a false alarm'.

I want to thank "Amelia" for this reaction, who belongs to Joni Mitchell's "Shadows & Lights" tour with a huge band with jazz musicians, including Pat Metheny on the guitar solo and Lyle Mays (one of the greatest keyboardists recently disappeared and the perfect duet with Pat in the Pat Metheny Group), I suggest you react to a great PMG song called "The Roots of Coincidence" winner of the Grammy for best instumental rock song of 1998 and I also suggest react to the bass solo of the only Jaco Pastorius in the same Joni Mitchell concert that they have shown, I am sure it will surprise

This is not really what I would call 'story-telling'. Joni is using Amelia's disappearance as a metaphor, ingeniously so, for her own experience in romantic relationships and the danger of 'flying too high', reaching too far. Sooner or later we must all come crashing down to earth. The ethereal Pat Methey solo at the end remains among his finest. The look of rapture on your faces is priceless.

There is a friendly contest among fans of Joni as to what they will recommend as her best work for reactors to devote their attention. For me, it is the wonderful folk-rock-jazz fusion sound of The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Hejira, when she had just about completed her migration from pure folk music to an electrified sound that incorporated other genres, especially jazz, into her compositions. I've never been a huge fan of folk music, and despite the moving lyrics of her early work, the music is just too spare for my taste. This live performance demonstrates how her move towards jazz affected the heroes of contemporary jazz from the mid-'70's as she readily attracted such greats as Pat Metheny. Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, and Jaco Pastorius to go on tour with her.
Also, on these two albums her vocals are vastly improved, with a slightly lower pitch, and none of that annoying trill she frequently utilized in her earlier work.
Alas, Joni sort of went off the deep end with her journey into jazz with her next album, but later returned to a slightly more electrified version of her folk music roots that many fans consider to be some of her best work as her career began to wind down.
Overall, she is clearly the greatest female popular music artist of the 20th century with a vast catalog of varied work to prove it.

    Read the lyrics
The song is really not about Amelia Earhart, notwithstanding the video footage.
Better yet read what joni herself said about the song- bottom line she said
the song is about her drive across the United States and the disintegration and breakup of her relationship with drummer john Guerin
