What I find amazing is that one day, all these cars we see coming out today we will see in a used car lot in 20 years and they'll be the same as seeing cars and trucks from the 90s and 00s in those same lots now. We will still say, "look how far we've come".
I don't think it will be quite the same in 20 years. Cars have grown a lot from 90s cars because of a big boom in safety and technology. I don't see cars getting much bigger in 20 years.
I'm glad this was discussed as I've been completely baffled at why "full-size" pickup trucks keep getting bigger when they were already the biggest consumer vehicles on the road. No one needed a bigger 1/2-ton truck, so why did they buy them? If you needed more power and towing capacity, you could simply buy a 3/4 or 1-ton truck instead of larger and larger "1/2-ton" trucks which have completely outgrown that classification. "Stupid" is exactly the right word, so thanks for that.

I’m pretty sure Thomas meant that Toyota will sell a lot of these across the U.S, Canada and Mexico, because I’m sure the Tacoma isn’t sold anywhere else
@AbrahamArthemius they are going to merge the Hilux and Tacoma Platforms in the next gen Hilux. It will still be called a Hilux, but it will be sharing the same platform as the Tacoma, the TNGA platform.
@@99toyotacorolla only because they don't sell the Tacoma over there, they separated the platforms, but not anymore, next-gen Hilux will be on the same platform as Tacoma.
I had a 2000 SR5 Tacoma with a standard transmission, cruise control, a long bed, a small back seat, a good sound system with a CD player, AC, and roll-down windows (in case I drove off a ferry dock). It was small and lovely and I could escape in an emergency. It was perfect.
Yup, just that for the full size, the cabin dimensions are always way better, even tho looks same size, the full size old gens are way more roomy compared to new gen mid sizes
Thomas is so right, why are people driving in massive trucks when they have nothing heavy to tow. Ideally the Honda Ridgeline should be the best selling truck on the market right now, that's why I have one
I had a 19 ridgeline and traded for a 2023. Gets good mpg unloaded and around 15 pulling a sxs on a trailer. People like to say they buy Tacoma's because they want to off-road but I'm over here like why would I want to spend 40-50k on a truck only to tear it up on a trail? The aforementioned sxs costs 1/4 of the price and has more ground clearance and less weight than a Tacoma. That's just one factor for me the other is ride quality. I have a few friends with Tacoma's and they all ride worse than my ridgeline on the road. To each their own.
2024 Toyota Tacoma Limited starting @ $53.5k 2024 Toyota Tundra limited crewmax 4x4 on sale now at many dealerships for $58k. Who in their right mind would buy the taco?
@@Phil42069 Youre looking at it the wrong way Its not about the price difference Its about the fact that if you have a size 10 foot you have no reason to buy a size 14 sneaker just because a size 14 is priced similarly to a size 10 This is for people who need a midsize, not a fullsize
@@Phil42069 Like i said, someone who want something that can do it all, without the big size of a full pickup. There is a reason why these sizes sell better than the full size pickups.
The Tacoma definitely interests me. I like that you can get a quad cab and a 6' bed in a smaller truck. Ford and GM don't offer that. I just don't want to take on another car loan given my truck is paid off.
I can't believe you guys one of the few guys who actually recorded the sound of the turbos. Thank you. I might have to trade in my 2022 trd offroad premium for 4th gen taco 😮😅.
Undoubtedly, it's a great truck, but I find myself wishing that midsize trucks wouldn't continually increase in size with each passing year. I have a fond nostalgia for the Tacoma models from the late 1990s to early 2000s.
The giant lettering and oversized icons are PERFECT. I don't care what y'all say. I'm not trying to read a screen when I'm driving - I'm just trying to drive!
Test drove the new Tacoma yesterday, I currently drive a 2015 GMC Sierra and I wasn't sure how I would feel about the size, but the new Tacoma it's very comfortable and more comparable in size to my 15 Sierra. I test drove the Tundra as well and it is HUGE, I agree full size pickup's are getting crazy big!
"It actually has more power than the V8 Tundra from 2006." Curious if this turbocharged 4 banger will run 500k+ miles on nothing but timely maintenance....
Toyota needs turbo engines so they take the ones they have used in Lexus vehicles and modify them. The 2.4L turbo has been around for a long time and is very likely to be quite tough and reliable. I just hope this truck is tuned for 87 octane because the Lexus equivalent requires 91.
I remember how much shit Ford got from putting a turbo 4 into the Ranger a decade ago. Good to see the Toyota fangirls are nice and quiet about this in the Tacoma.
I have been anxiously awaiting the chance to drive the TRD Sport. I may be in the minority here, but that trim with a modest lowering/leveling kit may make a great street truck, with the coil springs and street dampers.
I've really hated how large vehicles, especially pickups and suvs have gotten so am glad the taco is still "a bit" slim. I'd really like it if it was even smaller but I know that will never happen. Still holding onto my 3rd gen 4runner for how small it feels even compared to my dads 2nd gen taco.
Absolutely LOVE the new Taco !!! My current Toyota truck is coming up on 300,000 miles. Hopefully I’ll be able to afford one of these before Billy hits retirement age lol 😆
I have an 01 Taco TRD DCSB so basically this thing minus the 4x4 though I *do* have the diff lock. It's the perfect size and capability for what I use it for. I always think about upgrading when it goes but my baby just...doesn't die. I love my Taco.
First time a new generation of Tacoma's exterior design is inferior to the competitor's products, everything else is nice upgrade. I'm really diggin the attention this segment has been getting.
People buy full-size because the interiors are usually much nicer, the capabilities are much greater, they get almost the same fuel economy, and they don't cost a lot more. And everyone wants a V8, no matter how much they don't need it. It's a hard sell to get people to spend almost as much for less truck - no one would buy an 86 if it cost as much as a 911. The new Canyon and Tacoma seem to be bridging the interior quality, but they're still not as good as full size.
Makes me hope they release some Tiny Taco/Hilux variant that I could afford in 5-10 years. God knows of all the companies Yota can make a reliable turbo engine, easy to work on and inexpensive to buy parts, or even upgrade. Also, I like the blue 😊
I just sold my Tacoma last week. Great truck but, if you have a family or like to road trip the Tacoma is not big enough. Now that it's hybrid their is no under the seat storage. I Also switch to a F150 and the ride is SO MUCH better then my 2021 Tacoma and the F150 is one generation older. The F150 feels SOLID and also gets better gas mileage then the Tacoma I had. Why spend 40-58k on a mid size truck when you can find a full size in the range. I think most people would prefer to buy something that's over kill for towing and not need to push it hard then buying a smaller truck and always using it's max towing or close too it.
I have the same exact Tacoma as you see in the video. Got it almost three months ago. My gf and I took it from home in northern Michigan to Myrtle Beach and back a little over a month ago with no issues whatsoever.
@@stevea3149 Again it’s a great truck but a full-size truck for less just makes more sense to me. as a family vehicle from my experience. Myself, wife and two kids. Kids have pillows and blankets. Video games their snack and drinks etc. Trying to go through a mountain area when you have a V6 that feels like a 4cylinder. The engine has been screaming for the last hour because the transmission hasn’t been updated for the last 10 years. Yes it is do-able. Is it a nice experience? not really compare to riding in a full-size truck.
My dad is thinking of buying one (previous gen) but yeah they already are kind of expensive over here, I can’t imagine how much just a SR5 trim is gonna be over here, probably mid 40k right?
I think they practiced the shot but he slipped unintentionally - you can see a small trail where he fell, but the slip seemed very real. Probably just did the nonchalant thing so they kept it for a little gag.
The Tacoma will remain #1 but I think with the new 2024 Ford ranger and the 2024 chevy colorado will take a larger slice of the mid sized pie forsure!!
I lived in the Dallas area for 17 years, and there are more full size pickups that only drive to corporate jobs then there are people who could actually make use of them. For those that don’t know, most of Texas is as flat as your kitchen table. And for some reason, most of them drive ridiculously aggressive…
You say you don't need a full size truck but the problem is pricing. When I was shopping for my truck in 2017, I bought a brand new F150 4x4 XLT, with every single option and a 5.0 for $42k ($53k otd). At the same time, a mid trim v6 Tacoma with Toyotas absurd 7% financing came out to $56k otd. So why? Why would I buy a midsized ancient v6 when for less money you can get a full size v8 with more options? Until midsized truck pricing is actually midsized and not full-sized, I and most other people will just buy full size.
LOL, blow off valve? Nice. I have 2018 tacoma trd sport and I love it, can't wait to get one of these. Probably gonna go for the trd pro this time around.
Head room was the only thing that had ever stopped me from getting one but now it looks like i can potentially ditch the full size and get this of course once they dont have dealer mark ups
Every diesel pickup and transport vehicle in the modern era is boosted - those being the preferred method for heavy towing. Adding a turbo fundamentally doesn’t change reliability or add stress. By forcing more air into the engine, it increases efficiency and helps it run at a variety of altitudes with significantly less power loss. Great efficiency means you get more done with less. Hope this helps 👍

I’m pretty sure Thomas meant that Toyota will sell a lot of these across the U.S, Canada and Mexico, because I’m sure the Tacoma isn’t sold anywhere else
Pretty much, because outside the NA market, the Hilux is king.
yup. anywhere else, the Hilux remains the top dog of pick-ups.
No, you're wrong actually, it doesn't only sell in those places, but it also sells in California.
Full size trucks are still needed by those of us who tow over 6k LB or need more bed space. This is great for 80% of truck buywrs though.
I had a 2000 SR5 Tacoma with a standard transmission, cruise control, a long bed, a small back seat, a good sound system with a CD player, AC, and roll-down windows (in case I drove off a ferry dock). It was small and lovely and I could escape in an emergency. It was perfect.
100% true on the size comparison. I parked my 2000 Tundra next to the latest tacoma at work....theyre damn near the same size
Yup, just that for the full size, the cabin dimensions are always way better, even tho looks same size, the full size old gens are way more roomy compared to new gen mid sizes
Funny thing is the Tacoma has been the same size since 04
Thomas is so right, why are people driving in massive trucks when they have nothing heavy to tow. Ideally the Honda Ridgeline should be the best selling truck on the market right now, that's why I have one
hell they don't even have anything to throw in the bed. It's the aesthetic and driving position
They suck
@@papa_pt driving position confuses me, my wife and I got an Acura RDX but you have worse visibility in small spaces despite being higher up
@@davidlake611Americans aren't that smart generally speaking
I had a 19 ridgeline and traded for a 2023. Gets good mpg unloaded and around 15 pulling a sxs on a trailer. People like to say they buy Tacoma's because they want to off-road but I'm over here like why would I want to spend 40-50k on a truck only to tear it up on a trail? The aforementioned sxs costs 1/4 of the price and has more ground clearance and less weight than a Tacoma. That's just one factor for me the other is ride quality. I have a few friends with Tacoma's and they all ride worse than my ridgeline on the road. To each their own.
These modern midsize trucks hit every sweet spot nicely. They can be a everyday driver, homedepot project maker, carpooler, date night etc.
2024 Toyota Tacoma Limited starting @ $53.5k
2024 Toyota Tundra limited crewmax 4x4 on sale now at many dealerships for $58k.
Who in their right mind would buy the taco?
@@Phil42069
Youre looking at it the wrong way
Its not about the price difference
Its about the fact that if you have a size 10 foot you have no reason to buy a size 14 sneaker just because a size 14 is priced similarly to a size 10
This is for people who need a midsize, not a fullsize
@@Phil42069 Like i said, someone who want something that can do it all, without the big size of a full pickup. There is a reason why these sizes sell better than the full size pickups.
@@Phil42069well thats quite expensive literally for a Tacoma.
The Tacoma definitely interests me. I like that you can get a quad cab and a 6' bed in a smaller truck. Ford and GM don't offer that. I just don't want to take on another car loan given my truck is paid off.
Imagine if Dodge trucks offer that too.
Perfect for all the Americans to pop to the shop for a pint of milk
Nonsense. They sell our milk in gallons, not pints.
Damn the tundra should have gotten these features
Exactly
On god
What features ?
All 5 of the car review channels I subscribe to dropped a Tacoma video today. This is the only one I’m going to watch. Thanks guys and keep it up!
Why these guys know very little about cars
This channel is next-level on production and scripting.
That is a really neat truck! And amazing review as always! Poor "Billy", getting his poor decisions broadcast to the world, though 😂
The production is of highest quality. These guys are so talented
"It actually has more power than the V8 Tundra from 2006."
Curious if this turbocharged 4 banger will run 500k+ miles on nothing but timely maintenance....
EXACTLY
This seems like a solid redesign. Great video.
Toyota needs turbo engines so they take the ones they have used in Lexus vehicles and modify them. The 2.4L turbo has been around for a long time and is very likely to be quite tough and reliable. I just hope this truck is tuned for 87 octane because the Lexus equivalent requires 91.
I hope the hybrid does get 30mpg. Poor fuel economy is the worst thing about trucks
I remember how much shit Ford got from putting a turbo 4 into the Ranger a decade ago.
Good to see the Toyota fangirls are nice and quiet about this in the Tacoma.
This engine is used in a few other Toyotas where it is tuned for 87.
@spacebound1969 yeah, but Fords actually suck.
I have been anxiously awaiting the chance to drive the TRD Sport. I may be in the minority here, but that trim with a modest lowering/leveling kit may make a great street truck, with the coil springs and street dampers.
I am thankful for the opening minutes of this video. Simply brilliant. 👌🏼
This midsize truck is a massive truck everywhere in the world besides North America , and Australia of course 😂
They say the new Corolla is wider than the 3rd Gen 4runner. Which is wild to think it’s suppose to be a compact car 😂
My 1st gen Sequoia is 1000lbs lighter than the new one, has 1/3 more interior volume, and almost matches its fuel economy.
I miss the old ford ranger bodies and size. Not a fan of this bigger trend either and not a fan of this tacomas bigger front
I really hope that it would be as reliable, and low maintenance cost as the last generation! Blessings to the throttle house team! Keep it funny!!
🚦Embargo lifted now let’s see what the guys have to say about the NEW Tacoma …Clear that search 👀 history 😂😂😂
Lol this will sell like hotcakes 🥞
I replayed the fall multiple times too!
Well done Thomas!
we would love too see evaluations of WORK TRUCKS . they are so different than these nice grocery getters.
Absolutely LOVE the new Taco !!! My current Toyota truck is coming up on 300,000 miles. Hopefully I’ll be able to afford one of these before Billy hits retirement age lol 😆
Whoa that's a few miles, congrats!! :)
I would buy this just for that valve dump sound. It sounds amazing!!!
I’m in Texas and I need a full size truck because of the size of the bed. Mid size trucks hardly have any room.
I have an 01 Taco TRD DCSB so basically this thing minus the 4x4 though I *do* have the diff lock. It's the perfect size and capability for what I use it for. I always think about upgrading when it goes but my baby just...doesn't die. I love my Taco.
Locking diff is worthless. Tell a friend. And bring extra gallons of water for the sand. De nada.
That sound is crazy 🔥😳
Now we need a review of the new Ranger. Would be interesting to see the comparison as the Ranger was created mainly for markets outside North America
First time a new generation of Tacoma's exterior design is inferior to the competitor's products, everything else is nice upgrade. I'm really diggin the attention this segment has been getting.
Tacoma's have looked bad compared to the GM twins for a long time now.
James' search history was hilarious.😄
going forward, "And I'm...Billy! Thought leader"
i dont drive truck often, but the last tacoma was dream to drive. Looking forward to driving this
It was not.....
Drive the 2023 Pro4X Frontier. that is a dream to drive.
Can we trust James behind the wheels these days😂
Is James going to be Throttle House's Hammond? 😂
Great stunt work Thomas.
"If I bought the right oil the first time, why do I need to change it" 😂😂😂😂😂
that search history is gold ?
People buy full-size because the interiors are usually much nicer, the capabilities are much greater, they get almost the same fuel economy, and they don't cost a lot more. And everyone wants a V8, no matter how much they don't need it. It's a hard sell to get people to spend almost as much for less truck - no one would buy an 86 if it cost as much as a 911.
The new Canyon and Tacoma seem to be bridging the interior quality, but they're still not as good as full size.
Nice that they took a break from reviewing cars we can’t afford and going back to reviewing cars that we still can’t afford. Thanks for that, Joe 😀✊🏼
I can’t stop laughing now because the intro is too funny 😂👍
Drumsticks in the passenger door pocket. James is a drummer?
That fall was legendary, absolutely legendary
Makes me hope they release some Tiny Taco/Hilux variant that I could afford in 5-10 years. God knows of all the companies Yota can make a reliable turbo engine, easy to work on and inexpensive to buy parts, or even upgrade.
Also, I like the blue 😊
Yall should let Billy do a full truck review!
"why is it called a 4 x 4 and not a 16?“ 💀
Toyota made sure they invited you guys this time around. Left y’all hanging during the Hawaii trip. 😅
These are going to sell like crazy in Puerto Rico.... and we're expecting the top trim to go over $80k 🥴
Yup 😢
My dad is thinking of buying one (previous gen) but yeah they already are kind of expensive over here, I can’t imagine how much just a SR5 trim is gonna be over here, probably mid 40k right?
But the biggest question is, was the fall scripted or not? Looked real for me lol
I really hoped it wasn't because the fact that everyone stayed professional is Amazing to me🤣
I think they practiced the shot but he slipped unintentionally - you can see a small trail where he fell, but the slip seemed very real. Probably just did the nonchalant thing so they kept it for a little gag.
Thats crazy, has SO much tuning potential!!
For what. Its a truck. If you want to tune a car, don't buy a truck.
@@matthewm3912 Or you know, do it anyway :)
@@matthewm3912nonsense reasoning. Tune anything you want.

The Tacoma will remain #1 but I think with the new 2024 Ford ranger and the 2024 chevy colorado will take a larger slice of the mid sized pie forsure!!
You guys rocked this review! Great job! Subscribed, loved watching, and was entertaining immensely while learning tons of info! Kudos!
I lived in the Dallas area for 17 years, and there are more full size pickups that only drive to corporate jobs then there are people who could actually make use of them. For those that don’t know, most of Texas is as flat as your kitchen table. And for some reason, most of them drive ridiculously aggressive…
Who else paused the video to read the actual searches???? 🤣🤣🤣
Me " does horse get back the power when cars die😂😂😂"
You say you don't need a full size truck but the problem is pricing.
When I was shopping for my truck in 2017, I bought a brand new F150 4x4 XLT, with every single option and a 5.0 for $42k ($53k otd).
At the same time, a mid trim v6 Tacoma with Toyotas absurd 7% financing came out to $56k otd.
So why? Why would I buy a midsized ancient v6 when for less money you can get a full size v8 with more options? Until midsized truck pricing is actually midsized and not full-sized, I and most other people will just buy full size.
The slip, the roll, the recovery **chef's kiss**
Neither of you are first
LOL, blow off valve? Nice. I have 2018 tacoma trd sport and I love it, can't wait to get one of these. Probably gonna go for the trd pro this time around.
not blowoff sounds more like diverter valves or turbo flutter
Head room was the only thing that had ever stopped me from getting one but now it looks like i can potentially ditch the full size and get this of course once they dont have dealer mark ups
"If I snort Parmesean cheese do I Parmesean sneeze" LMFAO
love the turbo sounds, about time we get a proper engine in this slug ..... I lived in Japan for 11 years
Wouldn’t 4 cylinder turbo make more stress on the engine and transmission with heavy loads!? NA engines healthier in the long run.
You're going to be saying that a lot since Toyota doesn't really have NA engines anymore
They can build it to handle the extra stress if money allows. No one wishes they had an N.A. diesel.
However, if you’re looking to use your truck for serious off-roading and heavy-duty hauling, then a 4-cylinder truck is usually not for you!
